Discuss hacking problem

L. Craig Schoonmaker is a writer and fotografer, “Newark USA” fotoblog; webmaster, Resurgence City website.  We have known him for a few years, he came to our shop when John demonstrated pottery in front of our shop in the occasion of a Halsey Street Block Party.  I enjoy visiting his website.  I learn a lot of the events that happen around Newark, NJ.  He posted some of my old website page which got hacked around February this year.  First I got very upset about the hacking and I wanted to write something about it.  Then I felt sad about some humans’ behavior that causes so much trouble for others who work very hard just to give people more information that they might not know without asking for anything in return.  I lost my entire old website because I was ignorant about backing up my work.  So I had to start all over again.  I was so busy to rebuild my website I forget to write about my website hacking problem until L. Craig Schoonmaker emailed me that his website was hacked and wrote an article about it.  With his permission I decided to open a page about the hacking.  Below are the emails between Craig and myself about the hacking incident.

DONE:  https://newarkusa.blogspot.com/2011/07/ings-peace-project.html.  But there was another link in that blogpost, to a “diary” subpage that seems no longer to exist.  Was it deleted from the site, or given a different name?

 Cheers,

 Hi Craig,

I forgot to mention that Ing’s website was hacked.  She set up another website with slightly different lettering.  Instead of Ingspeaceproject.com it is now ingpeaceproject.com, the (s) after ing has been removed.  If you could change the reference to her website on your blog it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

John

CAN I assume it’s OK to use one or more of your graffics with a mention of your Kindle publishing?  One mentions Newark.

Hi guys,

This is a blatant self promotion of five of my play on Kindle.  For any Kindle owners out there, please check them out…literally.  For .99 cents you can download your own copy.  Even better you can borrow them from the kindles library for free if you are a kindle prime member.

Getting theatres to pay attention to your plays is very difficult.  I thought that “perhaps” I could shift the odds a little in my favor.

Go to my Amazon Kindle bio page and click on any of the titles to learn more.

Hi Craig,

Thanks for your email, my new website is www.ingpeaceproject.com and the email is ing@ingpeaceproject.com (I drop S after ing).  I lost all my old website I have to reconstruct all the pages including the Diary page.  That is why you cannot find anything from the old website.

Hope you have a nice summer.

FYI, I have mentioned Ing’s hacking problem in my blog, in connection of a hacking problem of my own:  https://newarkusa.blogspot.com/2012/07/two-screen-names-hacked.html.

Two Screen Names Hacked

John Watts, talented Welsh artist and husband to talented Thai(?) artist Ing-On Vibulbhan Watts (both of them long-time residents of Downtown Newark), alerted me to Ing’s “Peace Project” website having been hacked. Apparently she had not backed up onto her own computer all the files of her website, so when she found herself blocked from her web address by a hacker, she was unable simply to upload her files anew.

I felt safe from such a disruption myself, in that I have just about everything, on all my many websites, backed up on my own computer, and have as well a large proportion of the most important fotos and other files on my own computer backed up in the “cloud” (online storage areas). But a few days ago I discovered that two of my screen names on AOL had been hijacked/hacked. I was able to recover Schoonmakr on AOL, but have not yet recaptured XPUS.
+
I had thought that hacking an AOL account would be almost impossible, because AOL has a highly intelligent measure by which a mere two failed logins would trigger a shutdown of the login process for a while, and more attempts than that would shut it down for 24 hours. Alas, that turned out not to be the case. How a hacker got past those controls, I do not know.
+
On my XPUS screen name, someone was actually allowed to change the answer to the security question, “What is your mother’s maiden name?” How on Earth would AOL permit that? Any given user has only one mother, who in turn has only one maiden name. Why would any service allow someone to change that answer? I could see that, if someone made a typing error on initially supplying that information, but changing that info 8 and more years down the line? Absurd. And why aren’t there OTHER security questions one can answer, and shift to if one doesn’t work out (because, for instance, of a capitalization error on case-sensitive answers, not even a hack attack)?
+
I have to date been unable to rectify the problem online, but must make a fone call during limited hours in the regular workweek, to see if I can recapture my XPUS screenname/email account. If not, I will have to open an XPUS email account on Gmail and change the email address on at least one webpage, and possibly a group of webpages, to that Gmail address. How very irritating.
+
My hassle is, fortunately, nothing like Ing-On Vibulbhan Watts’s problem when her account was hacked. She apparently has had to rebuild her entire website, as tho from scratch, and had not, last I heard, been able to restore all of the webpages that were originally part of her website.
+
I put a link to Ing’s new website at a revision of my original post, of July 28, 2011, about her peace project.
+
What kind of monster would destroy a website devoted to peace among nations and individuals? Why do we, as a society, worldwide, PERMIT such malicious behavior? We can kill hackers. Why don’t we? One dead hacker would dissuade 100,000 more. Two dead hackers would dissuade a MILLION more. Three dead hackers would end hacking as a social problem. You don’t need hundreds of millions of dollars of scarce public funds to be wasted in prosecutions of the hardest cases. Take an easy case and demand the death penalty (for someone who attacked hundreds or thousands of people). One conviction, one execution, and the problem is reduced by 90%. A max of 3 dead hackers ENDS the problem.
+
But “we” don’t want to SOLVE problems. We want to COMPLAIN about them. And public officials want to MANAGE them. Solving problems makes them go away, out of existence. And if a problem ceases to exist, you don’t need anyone in Government to manage that problem. So we don’t EVER want to SOLVE or END a problem. Well, maybe society doesn’t want to end problems, but I do.
+
KILL hackers (who refuse to change, as proved by years of defiant behavior). If they be in good health, chop them up for parts for the hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people on waiting lists for organ transplants. My friend Joe from Belleville’s father died while waiting for a heart transplant. Why should decent people die, but indecent people live? That makes no sense. Kill the monsters among us, and multitudinous problems caused by those monsters just go away.

Hi Craig,

Thank you very much for your email and writing about the hackers.  I understand your feelings completely.  Humans are not civilized yet.  We do not know who did the hacking.  It might be some people who sit on the computers somewhere from some other country or people or companies who want to sell their security software.  Just like some firemen burn the place in order to be famous or have a job.  The problem is we have so many greedy people and crooks that do not care about anything and never appreciate other people spending time and money to produce the work for society to be aware and to learn more about the activities that they cannot acquire by themselves.  Just like you travel to places to get information and have to spend more time to process and compose the event before you publish the article on your website.  It is hard work requiring knowledgeable people to operate without asking for anything in return.  My husband and I really appreciate what you are doing.  There are more people who devote their time for society as you do. But unfortunately we still have a lot more uncivilized people who know only how to take, take everything for themselves and destroy progress of human integrity.

When I got hacked I felt like some one stabbed my heart or I felt like a homeless person.  Recently a case in NY and probably somewhere else also, a homeless man got beaten and burned by a group of young people.  The poor homeless man lost everything and probably lost hope in human kind also.  I do not understand how that group of young people can behave that way.  These people will be in the society and contribute their behavior for the rest of their lives if they never learn to be better humans.  I would not hesitate to think that these groups of young people could be hackers too if they could do it.  But anyhow my consolation that keeps me sane and peaceful is to think that all kind of the events that took place and are taking place now are part of human evolution.  We are still developing into a mature society and trying hard to become a civilized human race.  It takes time and it might take a while for mankind to live in harmony with one another.

Another consolation I have is that whatever you did will be recorded in history for future generations.  So I will go right back to try my best to do what I love best, which is to produce the artwork and contribute my time and energy for society as best as I can and keep in mind that a kind heart makes me feel Peaceful.

Sincerely yours,

Ing (Ing-On Vibulbhan-Watts), 7.3.2012

PS. Do you mind if I post your comments about the hackers on my website?
