Michigan lawmakers rebuff Trump after White House meeting

Nov 20, 2020  CNN

Members of the Michigan state legislature’s Republican leadership who met with President Donald Trump at the White House Friday afternoon said they “have not yet been made aware of any information that would change the outcome of the election in Michigan.” The Michigan lawmakers — who visited the White House at the invitation of the President — didn’t say anything to suggest they were going along with Trump’s long-shot effort to overturn the results of the election he lost to President-elect Joe Biden. “As legislative leaders, we will follow the law and follow the normal process regarding Michigan’s electors, just as we have said throughout this election,” Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey and Michigan House Speaker Lee Chatfield said in a joint statement after the meeting. A person familiar with Friday’s meeting said the session was cordial as the group explained to the President the process for certifying the election and assigning electors in their state. “Michigan’s certification process should be a deliberate process free from threats and intimidation,” the lawmakers said in their statement. “Allegations of fraudulent behavior should be taken seriously, thoroughly investigated, and if proven, prosecuted to the full extent of the law. And the candidates who win the most votes win elections and Michigan’s electoral votes. These are simple truths that should provide confidence in our elections.” Trump did not apply any overt pressure on the lawmakers to try and shift electors from Biden to himself, or to prevent the vote from being certified, the person familiar with the meeting said, but the President did appear interested in the explanation the lawmakers offered. #2020Election #CNN #News

PBS News: WHEN COVID, THE ELECTION AND THE FEDERAL RESERVE COLLIDE
By Lisa Desjardins, @LisaDNews
Correspondent

As President Donald Trump refuses to concedecoronavirus cases continue to reach new heights and Congress nears a bumpy end to its session, the stormy waves of 2020 politics converged today in the U.S. Capitol in a single vote. And this has presented us the opportunity to touch on and update you on all of it.

Congress and the coronavirus

  • 30 members of Congress have tested positive for or been presumed positive for COVID-19 since March. The latest four came in the past few days: Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Reps. Don Young, R-Alaska, Tim Walberg, R-Mich., and Cheri Bustos, D-Ill.
  • Many others have had to self-quarantine at various points due to known exposure.

Coronavirus and the Federal Reserve nominee

Today, the U.S. Senate held a key vote on a controversial nominee for the Federal Reserve’s Board of Governors.

Judy Shelton is an economist and controversial nominee from Trump who draws strong praise and equally strong criticism. She has sharply attacked the Fed and decisions made by chair Jerome Powell, and has openly called for a return to the gold standard as the basis of the U.S. monetary system.

Her views put her at odds with Democrats but also drew opposition from three Republican senators.

With 53 Republicans currently seated in the Senate, she could have squeaked through with the support of 50 and a tie breaking vote from Vice President Mike Pence. Also helping her chances was the potential absence of Sen. Kamala Harris, the vice president-elect, who has been in Delaware preparing for the transition but who has not yet resigned her seat.

But unlike the House, the Senate chose not to allow proxy voting amid the pandemic. Senators must be physically present.

Yesterday, Grassley announced he was quarantining after being exposed to COVID-19 and today confirmed he tested positive for the virus. Days earlier, Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., announced he would self-quarantine.

The result? A gripping (for political nerds) math problem.

  • Republicans went from having 53 Senate votes, to a starting point of 51.
  • Subtract the three Republicans opposed to Shelton and they were down to 48.
  • No Democrats were going to vote to approve Shelton.
  • That could have led to a 48-48 tie, with Pence as tie-breaker, if Harris did not attend.

But late Tuesday morning, Democrats got the message to Harris that her vote could be critical. She made it to the Capitol in time, voted, and the Shelton nomination was blocked. For now.  Republicans can try to return to it, but they have a narrow window. They are on holiday recess next week, and on the following Monday, Nov. 30, they lose a seat in the chamber.

That is when newly elected Democratic Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly steps in to replace Republican Sen. Martha McSally after he defeated her in a special election. That will put the balance of power in the Senate at 52-48. If the three Republicans who were opposed to Shelton remain so, and Democrats don’t budge, Trump won’t have the numbers he needs to push through his nominee.

While the Shelton fight is not necessarily over, there are few remaining paths to victory.

FIVE OVERLOOKED POLITICAL STORIES FROM THE PAST WEEK
By Ian Couzens, @iancouzenz

Progressive House Democrats urge Biden against Defense chief with contractor ties. Nov. 12. A letter from Reps. Barbara Lee and Mark Pocan highlighted concerns over the connections between senior DOD leadership and military contractors, suggesting that record high defense budgets in recent years have been the cost of having senior defense personnel “intimately connected” to the corporations. Why it matters: Though Lee and Pocan won’t vote on Biden’s cabinet appointments, their letter offers a glimpse into how progressives would view the possible appointment of Michèle Flournoy, Biden’s likely top pick for Defense secretary who has also in recent years consulted for big-name defense contractors. Progressive senators could seek to block the appointment. — The Hill

A Black woman should fill Kamala Harris’ Senate seat, California caucus says. Nov. 13. The state’s Black leaders have put forth Reps. Karen Bass and Barbara Lee for consideration to replace Harris, but many are also pushing for a Latino to be appointed. Why it matters: Gov. Gavin Newsom’s choice has significant implications for representation and inclusivity and is likely to be highly scrutinized. A Latino senator would be a first for California, a state with a huge Latino population, but Harris is also currently the only Black woman serving in the Senate. — Sacramento Bee

Nevada becomes first state to protect same-sex marriage in its Constitution. Nov. 15. Nevada voters banned same-sex marriage in 2002, but 60 percent voted to protect it in 2020. Why it matters: With a new conservative majority in the Supreme Court, the amendment means same-sex marriage rights will be protected even if the 2015 ruling in Obergevell v. Hodges that legalized gay marriage nationwide is overturned.  — The Baltimore Sun

The Biden team’s tug of war over Facebook. Nov. 16. Many Democrats view Facebook’s failure to prevent the spread of misinformation on its platform as an existential threat that needs to be tackled by the incoming administration, but President-elect Joe Biden has chosen people with close ties to the social media company to serve on his transition team. Why it matters:  Some are concerned that instead of cracking down on the company, Biden could embrace the Obama administration’s friendly relationship with Facebook, potentially giving cabinet positions to company alums.  — Politico

Perdue ducks debate against Ossoff ahead of January runoff. Nov. 16. After Georgia Sen. David Perdue canceled the last debate before the Nov. 3 election to attend a rally with President Donald Trump, he has again declined to debate competitor Jon Ossoff, saying he wants to focus on energizing his supporters. Why it matters: Voters asked to choose between Ossoff and Perdue for a second time will not get another chance to see them go head to head. This time, Perdue’s absence is drawing national attention, as the runoff is one of two in Georgia that will determine which party controls the Senate.  — The Atlanta Journal Constitution

On this day in 1800, Congress moved to Washington, D.C. It held its first session in the capital city, after a decade of meeting in Philadelphia.

Our question: Where did the first congress originally meet?

Send your answers to NewsHourPolitics@newshour.org or tweet using #PoliticsTrivia. The first correct answers will earn a shout-out next week.

Last week, we asked: Which president started the recent tradition of leaving a note for his successor?

The answer: George H.W. Bush

Bush wrote to then President-elect Bill Clinton, “Your success now is our country’s success. I am rooting hard for you.” You can read the full text of the letters here.

Mesmerizing Shots of Distant Galaxies and Aurorae Top the Astronomy Photographer of the Year Contest

Colossal: Mesmerizing Shots of Distant Galaxies and Aurorae Top the Astronomy Photographer of the Year Contest

SEPTEMBER 16, 2020  GRACE EBERT

“Andromeda Galaxy at Arm’s Length?” © Nicolas Lefaudeux (France), galaxies winner and overall winner. “Have you ever dreamt of touching a galaxy? This version of the Andromeda Galaxy seems to be at arm’s length among clouds of stars. Unfortunately, this is just an illusion, as the galaxy is still 2 million light-years away. In order to obtain the tilt-shift effect, the photographer 3D-printed a part to hold the camera at an angle at the focus of the telescope. The blur created by the defocus at the edges of the sensor gives this illusion of closeness to Andromeda.”

The 2020 Insight Investment Astronomy Photographer of the Year contest gathers a trove of sublime shots capturing otherwise unseen phenomena and distant fixtures of outer space. With more than 5,000 entries from six continents, the 12th annual competition includes Nicolas Lefaudeux’s photograph of the Andromeda Galaxy two million light-years away, one by Rafael Schmall that frames the lit trails of Elon Musk’s Starlink satellites, and another of the Aurora Borealis reflecting on the ice by Kristina Makeeva (previously).

Starting October 23, 2020, the top photographs will be on display at the National Maritime Museum. Until then, pick up a copy of this year’s book that collects all 140 winning and shortlisted shots, and explore some of Colossal’s favorites below.

“Iceland “© Kristina Makeeva (Russia) aurorae highly commended. “Winters in Iceland require some training in terms of wind protection equipment. Iceland is a country with very strong winds, so a stable tripod is required to shoot the aurora. Many astrophotographers wait in a certain place for several hours to capture the Aurora Borealis. The photographer was lucky in this instance as she waited near Diamond Beach where the reflection of the aurora on the ice was beautiful.”

“The Prison of Technology” © Rafael Schmall (Hungary), people and space winner. “The star in the centre of the image is the Albireo double star, surrounded by the trails of moving satellites. How many more might there be by the time we reach next year’s competition? There could be thousands of moving dots in the sky. In order to create astrophotos, photographers have to carefully plan where to place the telescope, and this will be more difficult in the future with more satellites in the way.”

“Light Bridge in the Sky” © Xiuquan Zhang (China), aged 12, young competition highly commended. “The photographer visited Iceland with his mother in 2019. The sky there is wonderful every night. The photographer had never seen such a scene before! The aurora is magical, as you can see in this photo.”

“Cosmic Inferno” © Peter Ward (Australia), stars and nebulae winner. “NGC 3576 is a well-known nebula in southern skies but is shown here without any stars. The software reveals just the nebula, which has been mapped into a false color palette. The scene takes on the look of a celestial fire-maelstrom. The image is intended to reflect media images taken in Australia during 2019 and 2020, where massive bushfires caused the destruction of native forests and have claimed over 12 million acres of land. It shows nature can act on vast scales and serves as a stark warning that our planet needs nurturing.”

“Desert Magic” © Stefan Leibermann (Germany), skyscapes runner up. “The photographer took this image during a trip through Jordan. He stayed for three days in the desert at Wadi Rum. During the night, the photographer tried to capture the amazing starry sky over the desert. He used a star tracker device to capture the sky. The photographer found this red dune as a foreground and captured the imposing Milky Way centre in the sky.”

“Observe the Heart of the Galaxy” © Tian Li (China), people and space runner up. “This image depicts the photographer climbing the radio telescope and Mingantu solar radio telescope array. First, the photographer tested and moved his camera so that the M8 and M20 nebulae would appear right next to the telescope. After taking the foreground image, he moved his camera a little bit but still pointing at the same location in the sky, and captured the background with an equatorial mount.”

“Tycho Crater Region with Colours” © Alain Paillou (France), our moon winner. “The Tycho crater is one of the most famous craters on the Moon. This huge impact has left very impressive scars on the Moon’s surface. With the colours of the soils, Tycho is even more impressive. This picture combines one session with a black-and-white camera, to capture the details and sharpness, and one session with a colour camera, to capture the colours of the soils. These colours come mainly from metallic oxides in small balls of glass and can give useful information about the Moon’s geology and history. The blue shows a high titanium oxide concentration and the red shows high iron oxide concentration. This picture reveals the incredible beauty and complexity of our natural satellite.”

“The Green Lady” © Nicholas Roemmelt (Germany), aurorae winner. “The photographer had heard a lot of stories about the ‘lady in green’. Although he has had the chance to photograph the Northern Lights many times, he had never seen the ‘green lady’ before. On a journey to Norway, she unexpectedly appeared with her magical green clothes making the whole sky burn with green, blue, and pink colours.”

“The Dolphin Jumping out of an Ocean of Gas” © Connor Matherne (USA), stars and nebulae runner up. “This target is officially known as Sh2-308, but the photographer has always enjoyed calling it the Dolphin Nebula. It is a bubble of gas being shed by the bright blue star in the centre of the image as it enters its pre-supernova phase. The red star to the right could possibly be influencing the shape too and might be responsible for the bill of the dolphin. While it won’t explode in our lifetimes, seeing the warning signs are quite neat. It never hurts to say that the warning signs are the most beautiful part of this particular target!”

Bored Panda: Children From Around The World Showcase Their Favorite Toys In This Heartwarming Series (22 Pics)

  Rokas Laurinavi?ius and Denis Tymulis

They say a picture is worth a thousand words but what about tens of pictures? From over 50 countries? Well, that’s a book, and it’s called Toy Stories: Photos of Children from Around the World and Their Favorite Things.

For about two years, Italian photographer Gabriele Galimberti had been visiting boys and girls around the globe to capture their portraits with their most prized possession — toys. From Texas to India, Malawi to China, Iceland, Morocco, and Fiji, Galimberti recorded the spontaneous and natural joy that unites kids despite their diverse backgrounds. Whether the child owns a veritable fleet of miniature cars or just a single stuffed monkey, the pride that they have is moving, funny, and thought-provoking.

Gabriele Galimberti

“I started this project almost by chance!” Galimberti told Bored Panda. “The first photo that I took for this series was in Tuscany, it’s the one with the girl and the cows in the background. She’s the daughter of one of my best friends. He asked me to photograph her, so I went to their house and she was playing with the cows. I thought that situation was really nice and so I decided to take a photo of that moment. I asked her to pose together with her toys and with the cows in the background. Then I really loved the result and some months later, when I had the possibility to start my trip around the world, I decided to take the same kind of photo in every country that I was going to visit.”

 #2 Rivaldo Fesna, 5, Port-Au-Prince, Haiti

Gabriele GalimbertiReport

Galimberti traveled the world in 2012-2013. At that time, he was working for one of the biggest Italian magazines, D La Repubblica. He was doing a story for the magazine about CouchSurfing and visited 58 countries using the Internet platform. Every week, he had a page on the magazine to report his trip and was publishing a portrait of the couchsurfer that was hosting him at the time.

“All the children that I have photographed are somehow connected to the couchsurfers that have hosted me. They are their children, their nephews, or simply their neighbors.”

#3 Tangawizi, 3, Keekorok, Kenya

Gabriele Galimberti

The kids look comfortable and relaxed in the photos and that’s probably because Galimberti took the time to earn their trust first. Mostly by playing with them. “I was really surprised to see how easy it was for children to understand my project!” He would spend anywhere from a couple of hours to a whole day getting to know the children before taking out his camera.

You can see a lot of differences in the photos but the thing that all of them have in common, according to Galimberti, is that they just love to play.

Texas Federal Court Judge Throws Out GOP Challenge to Drive-Thru Voting. The Judiciary is Holding

Nov 2, 2020  Glenn Kirschner

A federal Court judge in Texas (appointed by George W. Bush) rejected attempts by Republicans to throw out 127,000 votes because they were cast at a drive-trhu voting location. So now, both the Texas State Supreme Court AND a federal court in Texas have ruled the votes must be counted. The state of the judiciary remains strong. With Trump about to lose in a landslide, the courts will not save him. Bored Panda: Feast Your Eyes On The 30 Incredible Winning Shots For The 2020 UK Landscape Photographer Of The Year Contest

Lukas Garnelis and Julija Svidrait?

Most of us would probably agree that living through these difficult times, it’s quite easy to forget how spectacular and mesmerizing the world we live in truly is. Luckily, we’ve got a lot of talented artists and annual photography contests, such as the Landscape Photographer of the Year competition, that do a very good job of reminding us of all these things.

For the 13th time, this year’s Landscape Photographer of the Year competition invited both professional and amateur photographers to celebrate the mesmerizing landscape of the United Kingdom. The contest has four categories as well as the youth competition for photographers aged 18 or under. The winner of the whole contest gets awarded the prestigious title “Landscape Photographer of the Year 2020” and £10,000. In addition, there are also prizes of £1000 and £500 for the images judged the best and second-best in each of four categories. The best photographer in the youth competition becomes the “Young Landscape Photographer of the Year 2020” and wins £1,000.

With that being said, Bored Panda invites you to look through some of the most spectacular shots from the Landscape Photographer of the Year competition 2020.

So how did the man who once said he’d choose Oprah as his running mate end up with yet another campaign endorsement from former KKK grand wizard David Duke? ? Colossal: A Japanese Forestry Technique Prunes Upper Branches to Create a Tree Platform for More Sustainable Harvests

OCTOBER 27, 2020  GRACE EBERT

Image via Wrath of Gnon

Literally translating to platform cedar, daisugi is a 14th- or 15th-century technique that offers an efficient, sustainable, and visually stunning approach to forestry. The method originated in Kyoto and involves pruning the branches of Kitayama cedar so that the remaining shoots grow straight upward from a platform. Rather than harvesting the entire tree for lumber, loggers can fell just the upper portions, leaving the base and root structure intact.

Although daisugi mostly is used in gardens or bonsai today, it originally was developed to combat a seedling shortage when the demand for taruki, a type of impeccably straight and knot-free lumber, was high. Because the upper shoots of Kitayama cedar can be felled every 20 years, which is far sooner than with other methods, the technique grew in popularity.

To see daisugi up close, watch this video chronicling pruning, felling, and transplanting processes. (via Kottke)

Trump to Woodward: Nothing more could have been done to fight Covid-19

Sep 14, 2020  CNN

On August 14, the coronavirus pandemic was on fire in the US. More than 168,000 Americans had died, with more than 1,300 deaths that day alone. But when President Donald Trump called legendary journalist Bob Woodward, it was to find out one thing: He had recently learned that Woodward’s new book “Rage” was done and would be coming out in September, and Trump wanted to find out how he’d be portrayed. It was their 19th conversation, following 18 interviews that formed a key component of Woodward’s book. Trump had privately told Woodward in February he knew critical details about how deadly the virus was, and in March admitted he was playing it down. On August 14, Trump peppered the veteran two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist with questions about the book and what exactly was in it. CNN has obtained excerpts of the 10-minute conversation, which show Trump was more focused on the economy than the public health crisis. As the two debated Trump’s response to the pandemic, Trump finally asked: “So you think the virus totally supersedes the economy?” “Oh sure. But they’re related, as you know,” Woodward responded. “A little bit, yeah,” Trump replied. “Oh, a little bit?” Woodward asked. “I mean, more than a little bit. But the economy is doing — look, we’re close to a new stock market record,” Trump said. #Woodward #Trump #CNN

Remembering 9/11

By Ing-On Vibulbhan-Watts

John Watts, my husband enjoyed being on the plane, sipping a drink after a nice Indian curry meal on the flight.  John was watching a movie while I tried to find the best position to sleep in until we landed at Heathrow Airport, UK. It took about six hours from Newark Airport, USA to Heathrow Airport, UK.  From Heathrow Airport we took the bus to Swansea where we had to sit for five hours.  At about 3:00 PM we reached the bus stop in Swansea. A Taxi man drove us to Phyllis’ house, John’s sister for duration of about fifteen minutes.

“Do you know the World Trade Center collapsed?”

The taxi man asked us while he took our luggage out from the trunk.

“No!  It is impossible.  We just came from World Trade Center.”

We responded.

“Two planes hit the twin towers.”

The taxi man gave us more information.

After greeting Phyllis, we ran in the living room and turned on the TV and found out that there were no Twin Towers any more.  We learned that the terrorists hijacked the airplanes and used planes as weapons to destroy the buildings and people on the plane and thousand more in the World Trade Center Towers.  We also learned about the disasters in Washington DC and Pennsylvania.

We spent most of our trip, almost a month, watching the TV to find out about the news of WTC disaster.  We were gathering newspapers for more information also.  We made a lot of phone calls to our daughter who was home in Newark, NJ, USA.  ———

I began doing the artwork relating to WTC, a few ceramic sculptures as a Memorial for the Twin Towers.  I kept my artwork to myself.  I showed them to only few people who were close to me.  I did not want to provoke negative feelings or bad memories in others.  I felt such sadness about this horrible event.  It is the same sadness for any horrible event such as Holocausts, the nuclear bombs in Japan, the killing field in Cambodia, in Rwanda and other places in the world.  We humans never learn to be civilized.  We seem so quickly to forget the horrible events that took place and then bad things happen again.  We kill each other directly and indirectly.  The indirect actions of corruption, greed and power hunger cause direct action to surface.  Innocent people will always end up suffering the effects.  Hopefully we will be wiser and able to learn from past events and improve our human race to be able to live with each other in peaceful coexistence.

The followings are the pictures of my sculptures I produced on March 16, 2002 I made especially as a memorial to the Twin Towers and the people who lost in these events.  I also produced artwork that related to the event of World Trade Center disaster.

The description of WTC memorial:

Two towers stand erect, supported by two long panels.  Outside of two panels are animal designs in one side and the garden and plants on the other side.  The long path between the two towers inside panels is blank spaces which can be the area that the loved ones or any ones express their thought in writing.  And the corridor between two panels can be the place for children to play hide and seek.

I made this small-scale Twin Towers sculpture as a replica for loved ones or any ones who comes to mourn, let go of sadness and to remember the loss.  I hope we can realize that we should enjoy and appreciate one and other while we are still alive.

Memorial to World Trade Center

Time to mourn

Time to cry

Wipe the sadness away

Time to remember

Time to live

Get up and go

Work awaits

I will go on

Remembering the past

With heavy heart

When you are apart

Ing-On Vibulbhan-Watts, Sunday, September 11, 2011, 5:57 AM

Lost Hope

Little girl feels

Little girl hurts

To feel the pain so young

Her innocent lost

Even though it hasn’t begun

We all lost our innocent and freedom

Innocent of hoping working hard

We will be better some day

But freedom lost

Sudden someone comes

And take the hope away

Ing-On Vibulbhan-Watts, Sunday, September 4, 2011, 9:45 PM

On Tuesday, September 11, 2001 a total of 343 firefighters died with thousands of innocent civilians in the World Trade Center and other locations. Their lives were taken away by fanatic, brainwashed believers of a distorted version of their own religion.  If the hijackers believe in humankind and nature, they would not kill themselves and others.  So, one should always learn to questions what one is told to believe.

I salute all the brave firefighters and others who risk their lives saving others.  May peace be with the brave firefighters, all their families and the others.

Respectfully yours,

Ing-On Vibulbhan-Watts, Friday, August 8, 2003

Remembering 9/11

As we mourn the World Trade Center disaster – 9/11 this year, we are also mourning for more than 190,000 people so far, who passed away from COVID – 19.  We could not prevent the World Trade Center disaster – 9/11 because it came with a surprise attack from the terrorists within a short period of time.  But COVID – 19 started at the end of last year (2019).  Mr. Trump had knowledge about the deadly virus and knew that it was an air born disease and that it was not only dangerous to older people, but also to younger people.  Mr. Trump keeps lying to American citizens that everything is going to be O.K.   He never organizes or tries to warn or help people prepare, protecting them from getting the deadly virus.  Instead he tells people to go to work and pushes children to go to schools that do not have the time or finances to prepare for the safety of the children.  Mr. Bob Woodward’s Book, called, “RAGE”, and his tape recordings of Mr. Trump’s voice prove to everyone that he had knowledge about the deadly virus- COVID – 19 since the beginning of this year (2020).   He keeps on lying every time he talks to the press or goes to his rallies.  He never puts a mask on and tells his followers that it is OK not to wear masks or to social distance.

The following are news reports from different media talking about Mr. Bob Woodward’s book, RAGE and tape recordings of Mr. Trump’s voice.

The New York Times: 5 Takeaways From ‘Rage,’ Bob Woodward’s New Book About Trump

Mr. Woodward reveals that President Trump sought to play down the severity of the coronavirus and repeatedly denigrated the U.S. military.

President Trump described his chemistry with the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, to the journalist Bob Woodward, saying: “You meet a woman. In one second, you know whether or not it’s going to happen.” Credit…Erin Schaff/The New York Times

By Aishvarya Kavi  Sept. 9, 2020

“This is deadly stuff,” President Trump said of the coronavirus in a Feb. 7 interview with the journalist Bob Woodward for his upcoming book, “Rage.” But it was a vastly different story than he was telling the public at the time. Mr. Trump would later admit to Mr. Woodward that publicly, he “wanted to always” play down the severity of the virus.

Mr. Woodward conducted 18 interviews with the president for the book, which goes on sale next week. Mr. Trump also granted Mr. Woodward access to top officials inside the White House, revealing the inner workings of the president and his administration.

Here are five takeaways.

Mr. Trump minimized the risks of the coronavirus to the American public early in the year.

Despite knowing that the virus was “deadly” and highly contagious, he often publicly said the opposite, insisting that the virus would go away quickly.

“I wanted to always play it down,” Mr. Trump told Mr. Woodward on March 19. “I still like playing it down, because I don’t want to create a panic.”

And while he was saying publicly that children were “almost immune” to the virus, he told Mr. Woodward in March: “Just today and yesterday, some startling facts came out. It’s not just old, older. Young people too — plenty of young people.”

Latest Updates: The Coronavirus Outbreak

More live coverage: Markets

In April, as he began to urge the country to reopen, Mr. Trump told Mr. Woodward of the virus, “It’s so easily transmissible, you wouldn’t even believe it.”

Two of the president’s top officials thought he was “dangerous” and considered speaking out publicly.

Gen. Jim Mattis, Mr. Trump’s former defense secretary, is quoted describing Mr. Trump as “dangerous” and “unfit” for the presidency in a conversation with Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence at the time. Mr. Coats himself was haunted by the president’s Twitter feed and believed that Mr. Trump’s gentle approach to Russia reflected something more sinister, perhaps that Moscow had “something” on the president.

“Maybe at some point we’re going to have to stand up and speak out,” Mr. Mattis told Mr. Coats in May 2019, according to the book. “There may be a time when we have to take collective action.”

Ultimately neither official spoke out.

Mr. Trump repeatedly denigrated the U.S. military and his top generals.

Mr. Woodward quoted Mr. Trump denigrating senior American military officials to his trade adviser, Peter Navarro, during a 2017 meeting.

“They care more about their alliances than they do about trade deals,” the president said.

And in a discussion with Mr. Woodward, Mr. Trump called the U.S. military “suckers” for paying extensive costs to protect South Korea. Mr. Woodward wrote that he was stunned when the president said of South Korea, “We’re defending you, we’re allowing you to exist.”

Mr. Woodward also reports that Mr. Trump chewed out Mr. Coats after a briefing with reporters about the threat that Russia presented to the nation’s elections systems. Mr. Coats had gone further than he and the president had discussed beforehand.

When asked about the pain “Black people feel in this country,” Mr. Trump was unable to express empathy.

Mr. Woodward pointed out that both he and Mr. Trump were “white, privileged” and asked if Mr. Trump was working to “understand the anger and the pain, particularly, Black people feel in this country.”

Mr. Trump replied, “No,” and added: “You really drank the Kool-Aid, didn’t you? Just listen to you. Wow. No, I don’t feel that at all.”

Mr. Woodward writes that he tried to coax the president into speaking about his understanding of race. But Mr. Trump would only say over and over that the economy had been positive for Black people before the coronavirus led to an economic crisis.

Mr. Woodward gained insight into Mr. Trump’s relationships with the leaders of North Korea and Russia.

Mr. Trump provided Mr. Woodward with the details of letters between himself and the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, in which the two men fawn over each other. Mr. Kim wrote in one letter that their relationship was like a “fantasy film.”

In describing his chemistry with Mr. Kim, Mr. Trump said: “You meet a woman. In one second, you know whether or not it’s going to happen.”

Mr. Trump also complained about the various investigations into ties between his campaign and Russia, saying that they were affecting his abilities as president and his relationship with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia.

“Putin said to me in a meeting, he said, it’s a shame, because I know it’s very hard for you to make a deal with us. I said, you’re right,” Mr. Trump said.

Woodward’s Tapes, Trump’s Covid Admissions & a Homicide Prosecutor’s Take on Criminal Liability

Sep 10, 2020  Glenn Kirschner

With the release of Bob Woodward’s recorded conversations with Donald Trump, it’s time to revisit Trump’s potential criminal liability for the resulting coronavirus deaths. As a 30-year federal prosecutor (22 years handling murder cases in Washington, DC), here is a review of the legal elements of the crimes of manslaughter and second degree murder. Please have a look at how Donald Trump’s conduct compares to the elements of those two crimes. About this data

Description

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a new virus.

The disease causes respiratory illness (like the flu) with symptoms such as a cough, fever, and in more severe cases, difficulty breathing. You can protect yourself by washing your hands frequently, avoiding touching your face, and avoiding close contact (1 meter or 3 feet) with people who are unwell.

HOW IT SPREADS

Coronavirus disease spreads primarily through contact with an infected person when they cough or sneeze. It also spreads when a person touches a surface or object that has the virus on it, then touches their eyes, nose, or mouth.

Perfectly Timed Photo Frames a Solar Eclipse Around a Man Leading a Camel in the Desert

Perfectly Timed Photo Frames a Solar Eclipse Around a Man Leading a Camel in the Desert

By Sara Barnes on January 23, 2020

Awe-inspiring photographs all have something in common—the photographer was in the right place at the right time. Sometimes, it’s by happenstance; but, as photographer Joshua Cripps demonstrates, it is often the result of months of preparation. The California-based creative was planning on being in the Middle East in mid-December 2019 when he found out there would be an annular solar eclipse. This event convinced him to extend his trip to snap a picture of the magnificent sight. And thanks to his “crazy amount of planning,” he was able to capture a shot of the eclipse perfectly framing a man walking a camel across a sand dune.

So, how did Cripps pull off this photograph? “The whole shoot was meticulously planned,” he reveals to My Modern Met, “from the country (UAE) to the location (Liwa desert), to even the GPS coordinates of where I and camel would both stand, as well as the focal length of the lens I would use. Even the timing was planned, down to the minute of when the eclipse would appear in the frame behind the man and his camel.”

Cripps used an app called PhotoPills to first determine the ideal location, and then he began to think about the subject matter. He wanted something that would be “representative of the region and landscape,” and he eventually settled on a camel as it was a domesticated animal easier to control than a creature like a falcon or an Arabian horse.

As for sand drifts, not just any dune would do. Cripps had specific requirements for how tall the dune would have to be in order to get the shot. He knew that he would have to stand almost exactly 1,000 feet away from the camel to get the correct proportions between the size of the camel and the sun. He also realized that he’d need a dune that was visible against the sky when standing at an angle of 6.15 degrees. Luckily, Cripps was able to find a sand dune that met his stringent criteria.

With all the planning done, Cripps could only wait until the eclipse began. And once it did, he was in constant motion: getting things in place, shooting test exposures, and continually altering his compositions to chase the sun. The entire eclipse lasted nearly two and a half hours, and Cripps spent 23 minutes snapping a series of 133 images that captured the essence of what he set out to do.

Cripps is already thinking about shooting future eclipses, and he won’t have to wait too long. There will be a total solar eclipse visible in a “small slice” of South America on December 14, 2020. He’s now brainstorming what he’ll shoot during that time.

Thanks to meticulous planning, Joshua Cripps was able to capture amazing solar eclipse photography of a man walking a camel across a sand dune.

Cripps doesn’t speak Arabic and the man doesn’t speak English, so Cripps drew a picture of what he wanted the shot to look like.

Over the span of 23-minutes, Cripps snapped 133 photos.

Can Donald Trump retain the presidency? – BBC Newsnight

Jul 28, 2020  BBC Newsnight

As Joe Biden seems to be ahead in all the key battlegrounds, how can Donald Trump retain the presidency? The CFPB once defended consumers. Thanks to Trump, it now helps companies prey on them instead.

Kathleen Kraninger testifies in the Senate on her nomination to lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in Washington on July 19, 2018. (Manuel Balce Ceneta/AP)

Opinion by   Helaine Olen  Columnist   August 1, 2020

For two days this week, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Director Kathy Kraninger testified to Congress about protecting consumers during the coronavirus pandemic, first in the Senate and then in the House. It went about as well as could be expected, which is not particularly well at all. Kraninger, a thoroughly unqualified Trump appointee, has shown little interest in doing her purported job, which is protecting Americans from the financial services industry. Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-N.Y.) said she lacked empathy, while Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) demanded she resign.

Kraninger’s main accomplishment since the start of the covid-19 pandemic has been the loosening of regulations on payday loans. Previously, regulations stopped people who couldn’t afford to repay the loans from taking them on, because borrowers seeking short-term relief instead often found themselves trapped in a cycle of quickly rising debt. Annual interest on payday loans can run above 500 percent.

When queried as to why she loosened regulations on payday loans, Kraninger said that consumers are showing a lot of interest in them. That’s quite possibly true, given that at least 1 million people have filed for unemployment every week since mid-March, but hardly the point of Kraninger’s critics, who believe payday loans are exploitative products that prey on the financially desperate.

Then there is the fact that, since the beginning of the shutdowns, tens of thousands of consumer complaints have poured into the CFPB about mortgage issues, inaccurate credit reports, hassles with debt collectors, you name it. Kraninger says she’s addressing them but her critics — such as Warren — disagree.

The CFPB was conceived by Warren while she was a professor at Harvard Law School. It was meant to give consumers leverage over the financial-services sector, which all too often saw them as so much prey. It scored major victories during the Obama administration. It called out lending institutions for racist auto loan lending standards and spearheaded the federal investigation into Wells Fargo for a decade of turning a blind eye to its employees opening fake accounts for customers in an attempt to keep up with unrealistic sales goals.

No surprise, the financial services sector, which hates the CFPB, cheered Kraninger’s appointment to the job. Their faith was well rewarded, and not just in the area of payday loans. Last year, a House Financial Services Committee investigation revealed that during Kraninger’s first six months on the job, the amount of money the bureau recovered for consumers fell to six percent of what it had been under the final months of Obama appointee Richard Cordray’s leadership. Instead, under Kraninger, the CFPB emphasizes “financial literacy,” despite the fact that, when put on the spot by Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) in 2019, Kraninger couldn’t even properly calculate an annual interest rate.

Of course, the sabotage — and make no mistake, that’s what it is — of the CFPB isn’t even a major story in the Trump era. On Thursday, Vanity Fair revealed that a White House initiative led by Jared Kushner (who else?) to devise a national policy to test for covid-19 was undermined from within, possibly because the disease initially hit politically expendable Democratic states. Millions of parents are suddenly realizing there will be no in-person public school for their children this fall and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos shows next to no concern. The U.S. Postal Service, systemically underfunded, is now falling behind on delivering mail, seemingly at the behest of its new head, Trump donor Louis DeJoy. That’s not just an annoyance, but something that could contribute to election chaos in November if ballots are not delivered or received on time.

In the face of all this, Kraninger’s inept management of the CFPB barely merits a moment of attention. But it should. Her tenure in the top role of the government’s most powerful consumer advocacy organization is a demonstration of the contempt Trump and Republicans hold for governance, not to mention their prioritization of the interests of the wealthiest segments of our economy over the well-being of everyone else. It’s an absolute shame and travesty that Kraninger, whose knowledge of personal finance appears limited to how she can best serve the all-powerful financial sector, is in charge of one of the government agencies best positioned to help Americans protect their money at a time of unprecedented economic carnage.

BoredPanda: See How The “10 Billion Tree Tsunami” Tree Planting Campaign Transformed This Area Between 2019 And 2020

Robertas Lisickis  BoredPanda staff

Within the last year, planting trees was the thing to do in easing the negative effects of climate change. This is evident by the slew of various tree-planting initiatives that were organized, including Team Trees where 600 YouTubers pledged to plant 20 million trees, Ethiopia breaking the world record by planting over 350 million trees in half a day, and these 13 feel-good stories about saving our planet.

While the coronavirus has taken over airtime in recent months, the need for tree-planting never went away with many of these initiatives continuing to plant trees. And many are making good progress on their goals.

One such initiative is the 10 Billion Tree Tsunami, Pakistan’s largest ever tree plantation project, which recently had an update on its progress in the form of a before and after video that has been making people gasp in wonder.

It takes years for some of us to get simple things done, but nature is better at reaching its goals

Pakistan’s Advisor to the Minister of Climate Change shared an inspiring before-and-after video of how much the natural landscape in Balloki changed in a year

Malik Amin Aslam, Pakistan’s Advisor to the Prime Minister and Federal Minister of Climate Change, shared a video on his Twitter of what the Balloki Nature Reserve near Lahore in the Punjab district looked like a year ago, and what it looks like now.

The video shows barren land with virtually no greenery for miles, a sight that was seen during Aslam’s visit to the area a year ago. Today, it is a luscious and prosperous area fully paved with grass and trees.

The caption read: “Was a treat to visit #BallokiNatureReserve #Lahore after a year – #PMIK @ImranKhanPTI inaugurated this in 2019 as part of #10BillionTreeTsunami and the plantation results in a year are phenomenal – #Change and #NayaPakistan IA”.

This change is a part of the 10 Billion Tree Tsunami project which aims to reforest Pakistan

10 Billion Tree Tsunami is a government launched and funded project to promote reforestation in Pakistan. The project hopes to plant 10 billion trees within the span of five years, and to achieve a number of other objectives, including to increase forest area, rehabilitate degraded forests, to protect green areas and its wildlife, to provide jobs, among many others.

You see, trees help to protect the soil from degradation and to regulate water on farms, mitigate floods, and enrich the soil and surrounding areas with biodiversity. Also, crops grown in forested areas are often more resilient to the impact of droughts, excessive rains, and extreme weather.

The project aims to increase forest area, rehabilitate degraded forests, and protect green areas and the wildlife living in it, among other objectives

So far in 2020, 20,798 hectares of plantations were planted to achieve these aims. The Redd Monitor reports that a total of 350,000 hectares of trees were already planted in both planting and natural regeneration form and that the project has also created around 3,500 green enclosures in state-owned forests.

Back in February, the ministry announced their plan to plant 250 million saplings this spring in hopes of populating the bare bits of land around cities. However, it is not clear whether this has been achieved because of the coronavirus and the subsequent lockdown.

The project includes 3 regions with 27 divisions and progress is seen in many locations across the country

So far, a total of 350,000 hectares were planted with trees, creating 3,500 green enclosures nation-wide

Image credits: Ten Billion Tree Tsunami

The project earned great recognition, including that from the World Economic Forum, WWF, and IUCN

The project has come under fire for a number of reasons. There have been alleged reports of bogus billing, fake plantation, poor quality earthwork, unauthorised payments, and other activities that hint at corruption.

Besides that, it was also reported by the Redd Monitor that the coronavirus lockdown has also led to planters earning around 500 rupees a day—half of what they could on a good day before the pandemic, meaning that they now earn less than minimum wage (which is approx. 800 per day).

Despite this, the project has managed to earn a number of awards and wider recognition over the years, including that from the World Economic Forum, WWF, IUCN, and was ranked 4th biggest initiative by the Plant for Planet Foundation (UNFCCC). And now that people can see more results of the initiative in Aslam’s video, it’s safe to say that the project is going somewhere and both the planet and, subsequently, humanity will benefit from it in the long run.

Besides restoring natural landscapes, the project also plans to create jobs and ensure greater wildlife security

With its 10 billion tree “tsunami”, Pakistan joins a number of other massive tree-planting projects, including the aforementioned Ethiopia’s record-breaking campaign that managed to plant 350 million saplings in 12 hours. Another attempt at breaking the record happened in India, where 1.5 million volunteers planted 66 million trees in the same timespan, showing just how much more natural the world has become over the recent years.

What did you think about this? Have you had a chance to plant a tree, and if so, which one? Let us know in the comment section below!
