Barack Obama is hitting the campaign trail to garner support for his former VP Joe Biden. Whose Vote Counts (full film) | FRONTLINE

Oct 20, 2020  FRONTLINE PBS | Official

As America chooses its next president in the midst of a historic pandemic, FRONTLINE investigates whose vote counts — and whose might not. Subscribe on YouTube: http://bit.ly/1BycsJW In this documentary with Columbia Journalism Investigations and USA Today, New Yorker writer Jelani Cobb reports on allegations of voter disenfranchisement, how unfounded claims of extensive voter fraud entered the political mainstream, rhetoric and realities around mail-in ballots, and how the pandemic could impact turnout. With director June Cross, the Fred W. Friendly Professor of Media and Society at Columbia, and producer Thomas Jennings, Cobb scrutinizes one of the first elections held during the pandemic — Wisconsin’s April 2020 primary, which saw long lines, claims of disenfranchisement, an unprecedented number of absentee ballots and dueling legal battles between Republicans and Democrats. The film places the election within the context of America’s history around voting rights and suppression, and discovers lessons for the country as a whole as the November presidential contest approaches. #Election2020 #WhoseVoteCounts #Documentary Watch “Whose Vote Counts” starting Tues., Oct. 20: https://to.pbs.org/3jecZef Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/frontlinepbs Twitter: https://twitter.com/frontlinepbs Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/frontline FRONTLINE is streaming more than 300 documentaries online, for free, here: http://to.pbs.org/hxRvQP Funding for FRONTLINE is provided through the support of PBS viewers and by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. REVEALED: Trump’s hidden video deposition in Trump University fraud case

Sep 18, 2020  Mother Jones

? Full analysis on the Trump University deposition: https://www.motherjones.com/deposition ? Full Trump “hot-mic” tape with commentary: https://youtu.be/SqNtc-t0Cr0 ? Trump deposition “hot-mic” tape highlights: https://youtu.be/fZw228yu0hI During the 2016 campaign, Donald Trump was burdened with federal lawsuits that accused him and his Trump University of defrauding students who had paid thousands of dollars to learn the supposed secrets of Trump’s financial success. As part of the lawsuit, Trump sat for a contentious six-hour deposition in Trump Tower on December 10, 2015. He subsequently managed to get the court to seal the video recording of the session. But Mother Jones has now obtained the full video of Trump’s deposition. The written transcript of the session was released in June 2016, but the video version includes several exchanges that likely would have not played well for Trump if they had become public when he was chasing votes. Had the video deposition been released during the campaign, it probably would have yielded ammo for anti-Trump ads. The video shows Trump parrying with the lawyer for the plaintiffs, Jason Forge, over various issues, including false statements made by Trump University employees and Trump’s own memory. Trump at one point griped, “It’s the most ridiculous lawsuit I’ve ever seen.” He claimed not to remember having boasted that he possessed one of the best memories in the world and repeatedly said he could not recall matters related to the fraud case. He downplayed false and misleading statements presented by Trump University instructors as merely “hyperbole,” refusing to label them “false.” He even disavowed a passage from one of his own books in which he had assailed educational institutions for committing “fraud.” Mother Jones was provided the video by a source who asked not to be identified. Art Cohen, who was a lead plaintiff in one of the lawsuits against Trump University and Trump, confirmed that this was the actual video of the deposition. (Last month, Mother Jones posted a video of a conversation that occurred during a break in these proceedings between Trump and Dan Petrocelli, Trump’s attorney, in which Trump boasted of threatening the Better Business Bureau to change the D grade it awarded Trump University to an A.) Trump University shut down in 2010. Though Trump vowed during the 2016 campaign that he would never settle the Trump U lawsuits, days after the 2016 election, he did just that. He paid the students $25 million, without acknowledging any wrongdoing. NOTE: We are providing subtitles for this video that draw on details, including names, found in the official court transcript: https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-sta… 00:00 Introduction 00:44 Trump’s memory: best in the world? 02:07 The name game 07:00 Trump can’t name one instructor 07:27 “I’ve heard good things.” 08:27 Trump praises Hillary Clinton 14:59 Trump’s fraud flip-flop 17:58 Trump won’t call a lie a lie 21:45 Another lie Trump won’t acknowledge 25:53 Doing “well” by losing #Trump #Deposition #TrumpUniversity — For more award-winning independent reporting, visit Mother Jones: https://www.motherjones.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/motherjones/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/motherjones Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/motherjonesmag

Watch NASA’s OSIRIS-REx Spacecraft Attempt to Capture a Sample of Asteroid Bennu

Streamed live on Oct 20, 2020  NASA

Let’s do this, OSIRIS-REx! Time to journey #ToBennuAndBack. Tune in to our live broadcast as our spacecraft descends to the surface of asteroid Bennu, touches down for a few seconds & attempts to capture regolith (rocks and dust) using a “Touch-And-Go,” or TAG, maneuver. The spacecraft must target Bennu’s rocky surface with great accuracy, touching down within a rocky area just 52 ft (16 m) in diameter. During the maneuver, the spacecraft and the asteroid will be approximately 207 million miles (334 million km) from Earth. Live coverage from Lockheed Martin’s facility in Denver, Colorado, with mission managers from the University of Arizona, Lockheed Martin, and NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center begins at 5 p.m. EDT.  The spacecraft is scheduled to depart Bennu in 2021, and to deliver the collected sample to Earth on Sep. 24, 2023. It will be the first U.S. mission to carry samples from an asteroid back to Earth, and the largest sample returned from space since the Apollo era.

Photographer Captures Unique Image of the Moon Disguised as Saturn

My Modern Met: Photographer Captures Unique Image of the Moon Disguised as Saturn

By Jessica Stewart on September 25, 2020

Guatemalan photographer Francisco Sojuel was already having an incredible evening as he climbed the Acatenango volcano. It was Christmas Eve 2019 and he’d settled in at the basecamp when he noticed something breathtaking in the night sky. In the early morning hours, just before sunrise, Sojuel looked up and saw the Moon surrounded by a ring of clouds. Incredibly, the clouds made it look like the Moon was “dressing up” like Saturn. Recognizing the unique quality of the moment, Sojuel fired off some shots and came away with a once-in-a-lifetime image.

In his photograph, we can see the Moon circled by the clouds as it hovers over the landscape. A silhouette of Pacaya volcano and the Guatemalan highlands fills out the lower portion of the image and enhances its drama. According to the photographer, the cloud is actually a cirrostratus cloud. These high-level, thin clouds are made of ice crystals. At certain angles, they create halos around the moon. Given that there’s no real halo around this Moon and the texture of the cloud is a bit fluffy, it might be a cirrostratus fibratus or a cirrus spissatus cloud. These are both denser and are often formed by strong winds.

Sojuel is known not only for his incredible landscape and adventure photography, which includes shooting live volcanos, but also his astrophotography. He takes in the night sky as he goes about his adventures, giving his own unique perspective on Central America’s starry sky.

See more of Francisco Sojuel’s beautiful astrophotography.

As David wrote: Trump boasted about how his company threatened the Better Business Bureau to change the D rating it had assigned Trump University to an A. He complained about the federal judge overseeing the suit, Gonzalo Curiel, elliptically talking about how to challenge him and referring to “the Spanish thing.” Trump also griped that he had been sued personally in this case, and Petrocelli had to explain to Trump that he, not just Trump University itself, was in the legal crosshairs because Trump had been accused of making false statements to promote the venture. And Petrocelli pointed out that the case was not a lock for Trump because some of Trump’s “guys” had been “sloppy.” We published the original full-length source video as well a shorter video that highlights the most revealing moments from the recording. But The Internet asked for more. Readers and commenters asked for a full transcript and even more context. (2,000 words isn’t enough?) So we did one better: We had David himself sit down and talk us through the entire video, pausing at critical moments to provide expert context and commentary. In a sense, this is our newsroom’s first “reaction video.” So sit back. Wind your wristwatch. Fix your hair just so. And take in our full-length breakdown of a video that reveals how our current president conducted his private business when he thought the cameras weren’t rolling. — For more award-winning independent reporting, visit Mother Jones: https://www.motherjones.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/motherjones/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/motherjones Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/motherjonesmag

Rare “Blue Moon” Will Be Visible Around the World on Halloween

My Modern Met: Rare “Blue Moon” Will Be Visible Around the World on Halloween

By Jessica Stewart on September 23, 2020

Astronomy lovers have a special treat in store for Halloween. A rare blue moon will be on view across all time zones for the first time since 1944. But, if you’re getting your hopes up for seeing the moon actually tinged blue, you’ll have to wait for another moment—a blue moon has nothing to do with the color.

There are two types of blue moons. The first refers to the second full moon in a calendar month. The other type is a seasonal blue moon, which is the third of four full moons across a season. Sometimes a blue moon can be both monthly and seasonal, but it’s very rare. In fact, it won’t happen until 2048.

The blue moon the world will be watching on October 31 is the monthly variety. This second full moon in October comes after the first full moon on October 1. While the last monthly blue moon happened on March 31, 2018, this year’s version is even rarer, which is owed to the scope of its visibility. The Halloween blue moon will be on full display no matter where you live on Earth—something that won’t happen again for another 19 years!

Though you may end up seeing photos of blue-hued moons online after the event, don’t be fooled. These are doctored images that have been turned blue by filters or Photoshop. Blue moons aren’t any different in color than a regular full moon. Moons can sometimes be blue, but for a different reason. Certain changes to atmospheric conditions can release particles into the atmosphere that scatter red light, causing the blue appearance. This might happen after a volcanic eruption or a fire.

But even though the blue moon isn’t blue, it doesn’t mean that it’s not worth looking out for. And as you gaze up at the sky, you can marvel at the fact that anywhere on Earth, people are seeing the same blue moon.

MSNBC’s Ari Melber reports on Rep. Val Demings in this edition of The Beat’s Backstory Series, which focuses on substantive reporting on the key figures in the campaign. “When home state figures are added to a national ticket, it’s big local news and would certainly give the Biden campaign a new way to mobilize Florida Democrats,” Melber notes. The report provides an objective account of potential pros and cons in Deming’s career as Orlando’s first female Police Chief and her career in Congress. Donald Trump’s Niece on Her Bestselling Family Tell-all

Jul 22, 2020  Mother Jones

? Read the full article at Mother Jones: https://bit.ly/2X0iWTA Many American families have their dysfunction. But in only one American family has the racist, misogynistic, ignorant blowhard uncle become the president of the United States. What is that like? Well, we don’t have to guess. Because Mary L. Trump, the niece of President Donald Trump, has written a bestseller about the horrific family environment that produced him. And this week she talked to Mother Jones about her uncle, her book, and how she came to write it. After the Trump family went to court to stop the book—and lost—it was published last week and has reportedly sold a million copies. This memoir/psychological dissection, “Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man,” is a harrowing account of a man and a clan shaped by ego, rivalry, the pursuit of wealth, and profound pathology. Mary Trump’s depiction of her uncle as a broken human being—broken by his father, Fred, a ruthless patriarch with sociopathic traits—is more explanatory than revelatory. She doesn’t show us a Trump we haven’t already seen. But she explains how and why he became a person more concerned about his TV ratings than the deaths of 140,000 fellow Americans. — For more award-winning independent reporting, visit Mother Jones: https://www.motherjones.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/motherjones/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/motherjones Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/motherjonesmag

About this data

Description

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a new virus.

The disease causes respiratory illness (like the flu) with symptoms such as a cough, fever, and in more severe cases, difficulty breathing. You can protect yourself by washing your hands frequently, avoiding touching your face, and avoiding close contact (1 meter or 3 feet) with people who are unwell.

HOW IT SPREADS

Coronavirus disease spreads primarily through contact with an infected person when they cough or sneeze. It also spreads when a person touches a surface or object that has the virus on it, then touches their eyes, nose, or mouth.
