The remains of U.S. Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick were transported in an urn to the building he helped defend during the Jan. 6 D.C. insurrection. A ceremony was held as he lay in honor on Wednesday.
Why it matters: Lying in honor is a final tribute reserved only for private citizens who’ve provided distinguished service to the U.S. President Biden and first lady Jill Biden joined congressional leaders, police and others in paying tribute to Sicknick at the Capitol Rotunda Tuesday night.
The latest: Congressional leaders delivered remarks at a ceremony on Wednesday.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said to Sicknick’s family: “We will never forget his sacrifice … We will never forget. With your permission, may we be worthy to carry Brian in our hearts.”
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y) called Sicknick “a peacekeeper, not only in duty, but in spirit.” He added: Talk to his colleagues and they will tell you that Brian was a kind and humble man, with profound inner strength, the quiet rock of his unit.”

Lindsey Graham Stonewalls Merrick Garland’s Confirmation Hearing, & Upcoming Team Justice Projects
In an appalling bit of Republican obstruction, Lindsey Graham (who at the moment remains the leader of the Senate Judiciary Committee) is refusing to set a date for the confirmation hearing for Merrick Garland, President Biden’s nominee for Attorney General. Graham’s action is transparently in retaliation for the impeachment of Donald Trump. Indeed, Graham himself connects the two in a statement he released, saying, in part, “government requires trade-offs.” What can We The People do to try to fix what politicians have broken in our government and our country? This video discusses two of the Team Justice projects that are designed to encourage and inspire full citizen participation in all aspects of government. The Senate voted along party lines on a procedural step that will let Democrats avoid a filibuster on President Biden’s coronavirus relief package and pass it with a straight majority.
Biden signed three executive orders on immigration, including one that aims to reunite migrant families that the Trump administration separated. Officials and immigration advocates cautioned that the changes would not happen immediately.
The Biden administration announced new efforts to speed up vaccinations, including sending doses to retail pharmacies.
In their first impeachment filings, Donald Trump’s lawyers denied that he incited the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol and argued that the Constitution did not permit the Senate to try a former president.
House impeachment managers asserted that history supported the Senate’s right to try a former president and said that Trump was “singularly responsible” for the riot.
The body of Brian Sicknick, the Capitol Police officer who died from injuries sustained during the riot, will lie in honor at the Capitol today.

Donald Trump’s Pardon Palooza – What Message Is Trump Sending With His Many Pardons?
Donald Trump seems to be on the “Friends and Family” pardon plan. What do Trump’s many pardons say about Donald Trump and what do they say about America? Update: Since recording this video, Trump has issued even more pardons and I’m sure he is not done yet. Stay tuned. Trump pardons 15, including 4 Blackwater defendants who killed 14 innocent, unarmed Iraqis.
Donald Trump grants 15 pardons: he pardoned Republican Congressman Chris Collins who committed financial crimes/insider trading, Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter who stole campaign money from his supporters, he pardoned George Papadopoulos who lied to the FBI about contacts with Russians. But worst of all, in my opinion, he pardoned the four Blackwater contractors who slaughtered 14 innocent, unarmed Iraqi men and women and injured 17 others. My former office, the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, prosecuted those four defendant three times, trying to bring justice to the dozens of Iraqi citizens and their surviving family members. Trump’s pardons of these murderers is a horrific affront to victims rights the world over. Celling of Hazrate-Masomeh’s mosque in Qom, Iran, all images courtesy of Mehrdad Rasoulifard (@m1rasoulifard)
Capturing the intricately tiled ceilings of centuries old mosques, Instagram photographer Mehrdad Rasoulifard (@m1rasoulifard) gives his followers both a history lesson and aesthetic treat. The ceilings are not only covered in rich patterns, but architecturally structured to appear like complex tessellations or honeycombs. The mosques are built to include spiraling series of domes and indents, causing the viewer to get lost in their disorienting beauty.
Often Iranian architecture utilizes symbolic geometry, incorporating an abundant use of circles and squares obvious in the photographed buildings’ symmetrical layouts. Popular colors incorporated into these tiled structures include gold, white, and turquoise which are typically layered onto dark blue backgrounds.
The oldest structure photographed is over 900-years-old which hints at the vast architectural history found in Iran. You can see more of the country’s detailed places of worship and observation on Rasoulifard’s Instagram. (via Designboom)

Does Vitamin D help with Immunity? || Vitamin D and Covid 19
Does Vitamin D help with Immunity? || Vitamin D and Covid 19 #covid#covid19#coronavirus COVID Update Today by Doctor Mike Hansen (YouTube Video Playlist) https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list… Hopefully, YT does not take this video down, as it’s all based on medical studies. If they keep doing this, I will have to upload my videos to a different website. The Vitamin D supplement that I take: https://amzn.to/2zjaqqb Mentioned Video: Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) and Vitamin D2 (Ergocalciferol) and Calcitriol Video Link: https://youtu.be/yf8uYzgMsEw So what does not having enough vitamin D have to do with COVID 19? And IF insufficient vitamin D levels CAUSE more severe disease, why is that? Well, I have to first clarify that it’s not proven that insufficient vitamin D levels lead to worse outcomes. But while it hasn’t been proven, it also certainly hasn’t been disproven. And there is more and more compelling evidence suggesting that lower levels lead to worse outcomes. And there’s no question that vitamin D plays an important role in our immune system. More and more studies are coming out that are sorting out its exact role in this capacity. But the link between poor vitamin D status and risk of certain infections remains cloudy. In 2017, a meta-analysis study consisted of 25 different randomized trials with about 11,000 patients in total, evaluating the incidence of acute respiratory infection. Vitamin D supplementation reduced the percentage of patients experiencing an acute respiratory tract infection. The incidence of URTI in the vitamin D group was 40.3%, compared to 42.2% in the placebo group. In a subgroup analysis, vitamin D supplementation was most effective in patients with vitamin D levels less than 10 ng/mL and those treated daily or weekly smaller doses instead of a huge single dose. The takeaway from this meta-analysis study is that being vitamin d deficient probably makes people more prone to getting upper respiratory infections and should take supplemental vitamin D. But people who have low levels should be taking supplemental vitamin D regardless. Vitamin D has major effects on nearly all our immune system cells, including dendritic cells, macrophages, and T and B lymphocytes. These immune cells have a receptor that binds to vitamin D, called the vitamin D receptor, or VDR. Here are some questions we still need answers to: 1) what level of vitamin D is adequate to protect against or minimize the impact of COVID 19? 2) What level of vitamin D is considered too high 3) should more and more people get their vitamin D levels checked, especially during this pandemic, when fewer and fewer people are physically going to the doctor? 4) should people just supplement themselves? If so, how much? These are all tough questions to answer, especially because we won’t have RCT results for vitamin D anytime soon. Given that low dose, vitamin D is pretty darn safe, it seems quite reasonable for people to take a low dose supplement, especially if they think they might not be getting enough from sunlight or their diet. Of course, ideally, you want to have a discussion with your doctor if possible. A common question is, How much Vitamin D should I take a day? Personally, I take 1,000 IU per day. I know that I’m not going to run anywhere near toxic levels of vitamin D with that dose, while at the same time, I know that I won’t be vitamin D deficient. Over the weekend of November 10, activist group Extinction Rebellion launched a dramatic installation in London’s River Thames. “Our House is Flooding” was comprised of a life-size brick house, complete with flood lights, a security camera, and a satellite dish, sunken into the British capital’s major waterway.
“Sadly, climate-change is something that affects every one of us. We want to respectfully raise awareness of the severity of the impending human-made disaster,” said Katey Burak and Rob Higgs, who co-built the house. “We wanted to make something that people can visually connect to, whilst leaning on the government and the experts to make the changes that need to be made. Until they make the big legal and financial changes, it’s very hard for people like me or you to make significant changes to protect ourselves and the world around us.”
The impact of climate change on the oceans is inextricably linked to the safety and health of land-bound humans and animals as well. In another chilling example of the immediate effects of climate change and rising sea levels, the world’s foremost art event, the Venice Biennale, was shut down just a few days after “Our House is Flooding”, due to damaging sea surges and floods in the fragile Italian city.
Keep up with Extinction Rebellion’s actions that fight for ecological and social justice on Instagram and Twitter, and find ways to get involved on the organization’s global website. (via Hyperallergic)
Act Now: Our House is Flooding | Extinction Rebellion
Extinction Rebellion activists staged an action on the river Thames in London. A classic suburban house was seen floating down the river (in the early hours of Sunday 10th November) sinking into the water in yet another attempt to send an SOS to the government on climate inaction and draw attention to the threat humans face from climate change and rising sea levels. Representing the disastrous realities of projected sea level rises, perhaps the stunt was unnecessary. As the ongoing flood disaster in Derbyshire and Yorkshire has so starkly illustrated, our homes, businesses and families are at very real risk. We are watching, in real-time, as people’s lives are destroyed around the world and in the UK. Unless action is taken to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero these tragedies are set to worsen. 2017: President Obama on eight years in the White House
Members of the Michigan state legislature’s Republican leadership who met with President Donald Trump at the White House Friday afternoon said they “have not yet been made aware of any information that would change the outcome of the election in Michigan.” The Michigan lawmakers — who visited the White House at the invitation of the President — didn’t say anything to suggest they were going along with Trump’s long-shot effort to overturn the results of the election he lost to President-elect Joe Biden. “As legislative leaders, we will follow the law and follow the normal process regarding Michigan’s electors, just as we have said throughout this election,” Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey and Michigan House Speaker Lee Chatfield said in a joint statement after the meeting. A person familiar with Friday’s meeting said the session was cordial as the group explained to the President the process for certifying the election and assigning electors in their state. “Michigan’s certification process should be a deliberate process free from threats and intimidation,” the lawmakers said in their statement. “Allegations of fraudulent behavior should be taken seriously, thoroughly investigated, and if proven, prosecuted to the full extent of the law. And the candidates who win the most votes win elections and Michigan’s electoral votes. These are simple truths that should provide confidence in our elections.” Trump did not apply any overt pressure on the lawmakers to try and shift electors from Biden to himself, or to prevent the vote from being certified, the person familiar with the meeting said, but the President did appear interested in the explanation the lawmakers offered. #2020Election#CNN#News

PBS News: WHEN COVID, THE ELECTION AND THE FEDERAL RESERVE COLLIDE
By Lisa Desjardins, @LisaDNews
Correspondent
As President Donald Trump refuses to concede, coronavirus cases continue to reach new heights and Congress nears a bumpy end to its session, the stormy waves of 2020 politics converged today in the U.S. Capitol in a single vote. And this has presented us the opportunity to touch on and update you on all of it.
Congress and the coronavirus
30 members of Congress have tested positive for or been presumed positive for COVID-19 since March. The latest four came in the past few days: Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Reps. Don Young, R-Alaska, Tim Walberg, R-Mich., and Cheri Bustos, D-Ill.
Many others have had to self-quarantine at various points due to known exposure.
Coronavirus and the Federal Reserve nominee
Today, the U.S. Senate held a key vote on a controversial nominee for the Federal Reserve’s Board of Governors.
Judy Shelton is an economist and controversial nominee from Trump who draws strong praise and equally strong criticism. She has sharply attacked the Fed and decisions made by chair Jerome Powell, and has openly called for a return to the gold standard as the basis of the U.S. monetary system.
Her views put her at odds with Democrats but also drew opposition from three Republican senators.
With 53 Republicans currently seated in the Senate, she could have squeaked through with the support of 50 and a tie breaking vote from Vice President Mike Pence. Also helping her chances was the potential absence of Sen. Kamala Harris, the vice president-elect, who has been in Delaware preparing for the transition but who has not yet resigned her seat.
But unlike the House, the Senate chose not to allow proxy voting amid the pandemic. Senators must be physically present.
Yesterday, Grassley announced he was quarantining after being exposed to COVID-19 and today confirmed he tested positive for the virus. Days earlier, Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., announced he would self-quarantine.
The result? A gripping (for political nerds) math problem.
Republicans went from having 53 Senate votes, to a starting point of 51.
Subtract the three Republicans opposed to Shelton and they were down to 48.
No Democrats were going to vote to approve Shelton.
That could have led to a 48-48 tie, with Pence as tie-breaker, if Harris did not attend.
But late Tuesday morning, Democrats got the message to Harris that her vote could be critical. She made it to the Capitol in time, voted, and the Shelton nomination was blocked. For now. Republicans can try to return to it, but they have a narrow window. They are on holiday recess next week, and on the following Monday, Nov. 30, they lose a seat in the chamber.
That is when newly elected Democratic Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly steps in to replace Republican Sen. Martha McSally after he defeated her in a special election. That will put the balance of power in the Senate at 52-48. If the three Republicans who were opposed to Shelton remain so, and Democrats don’t budge, Trump won’t have the numbers he needs to push through his nominee.
While the Shelton fight is not necessarily over, there are few remaining paths to victory.
FIVE OVERLOOKED POLITICAL STORIES FROM THE PAST WEEK
By Ian Couzens, @iancouzenz

Progressive House Democrats urge Biden against Defense chief with contractor ties. Nov. 12. A letter from Reps. Barbara Lee and Mark Pocan highlighted concerns over the connections between senior DOD leadership and military contractors, suggesting that record high defense budgets in recent years have been the cost of having senior defense personnel “intimately connected” to the corporations. Why it matters: Though Lee and Pocan won’t vote on Biden’s cabinet appointments, their letter offers a glimpse into how progressives would view the possible appointment of Michèle Flournoy, Biden’s likely top pick for Defense secretary who has also in recent years consulted for big-name defense contractors. Progressive senators could seek to block the appointment. — The Hill
A Black woman should fill Kamala Harris’ Senate seat, California caucus says. Nov. 13. The state’s Black leaders have put forth Reps. Karen Bass and Barbara Lee for consideration to replace Harris, but many are also pushing for a Latino to be appointed. Why it matters: Gov. Gavin Newsom’s choice has significant implications for representation and inclusivity and is likely to be highly scrutinized. A Latino senator would be a first for California, a state with a huge Latino population, but Harris is also currently the only Black woman serving in the Senate. — Sacramento Bee
Nevada becomes first state to protect same-sex marriage in its Constitution. Nov. 15. Nevada voters banned same-sex marriage in 2002, but 60 percent voted to protect it in 2020. Why it matters: With a new conservative majority in the Supreme Court, the amendment means same-sex marriage rights will be protected even if the 2015 ruling in Obergevell v. Hodges that legalized gay marriage nationwide is overturned. — The Baltimore Sun
The Biden team’s tug of war over Facebook. Nov. 16. Many Democrats view Facebook’s failure to prevent the spread of misinformation on its platform as an existential threat that needs to be tackled by the incoming administration, but President-elect Joe Biden has chosen people with close ties to the social media company to serve on his transition team. Why it matters: Some are concerned that instead of cracking down on the company, Biden could embrace the Obama administration’s friendly relationship with Facebook, potentially giving cabinet positions to company alums. — Politico
Perdue ducks debate against Ossoff ahead of January runoff. Nov. 16. After Georgia Sen. David Perdue canceled the last debate before the Nov. 3 election to attend a rally with President Donald Trump, he has again declined to debate competitor Jon Ossoff, saying he wants to focus on energizing his supporters. Why it matters: Voters asked to choose between Ossoff and Perdue for a second time will not get another chance to see them go head to head. This time, Perdue’s absence is drawing national attention, as the runoff is one of two in Georgia that will determine which party controls the Senate. — The Atlanta Journal Constitution #POLITICSTRIVIA

Trump said the launch was great, but said NASA was “a closed up disaster” when his administration took charge, and that under his leadership NASA is now the most advanced space center in the world. NASA was not closed up when the Trump administration began in 2017. NASA’s Commercial Crew Program that led to today’s launch was begun under the Obama administration in 2010.
Biden, meanwhile, showered NASA and SpaceX with more traditional praise.
Congratulations to NASA and SpaceX on today’s launch. It’s a testament to the power of science and what we can accomplish by harnessing our innovation, ingenuity, and determination. I join all Americans and the people of Japan in wishing the astronauts Godspeed on their journey.November 16, 2020

For about two years, Italian photographer Gabriele Galimberti had been visiting boys and girls around the globe to capture their portraits with their most prized possession — toys. From Texas to India, Malawi to China, Iceland, Morocco, and Fiji, Galimberti recorded the spontaneous and natural joy that unites kids despite their diverse backgrounds. Whether the child owns a veritable fleet of miniature cars or just a single stuffed monkey, the pride that they have is moving, funny, and thought-provoking.
“I started this project almost by chance!” Galimberti told Bored Panda. “The first photo that I took for this series was in Tuscany, it’s the one with the girl and the cows in the background. She’s the daughter of one of my best friends. He asked me to photograph her, so I went to their house and she was playing with the cows. I thought that situation was really nice and so I decided to take a photo of that moment. I asked her to pose together with her toys and with the cows in the background. Then I really loved the result and some months later, when I had the possibility to start my trip around the world, I decided to take the same kind of photo in every country that I was going to visit.”
Galimberti traveled the world in 2012-2013. At that time, he was working for one of the biggest Italian magazines, D La Repubblica. He was doing a story for the magazine about CouchSurfing and visited 58 countries using the Internet platform. Every week, he had a page on the magazine to report his trip and was publishing a portrait of the couchsurfer that was hosting him at the time.
“All the children that I have photographed are somehow connected to the couchsurfers that have hosted me. They are their children, their nephews, or simply their neighbors.”
The kids look comfortable and relaxed in the photos and that’s probably because Galimberti took the time to earn their trust first. Mostly by playing with them. “I was really surprised to see how easy it was for children to understand my project!” He would spend anywhere from a couple of hours to a whole day getting to know the children before taking out his camera.
You can see a lot of differences in the photos but the thing that all of them have in common, according to Galimberti, is that they just love to play.

Election Tracker — November 1, 2020 | LIVE | NowThis
GET THE FACTS—TRUMP TRIES TO DELEGITIMIZE VOTE-COUNTING: NowThis is tracking the latest 2020 news & forecasts. Pres. Trump and his allies have argued for weeks that votes tallied after election night shouldn’t count. ‘The Election should end on November 3rd, not weeks later!’ Trump tweeted. GOP officials say they may legally challenge votes not counted on Election Day. But no laws back up Trump’s claims. Here are the facts: 1) Ballots are legally counted after Election Day in all 50 states 2) No state reports final results or certifies the winner on Election Day 3) In 29 states, military ballots can be received after Election Day, and in 18 states, ballots that arrive after Election Day are counted, per state law 4) Absentee & mail ballots take longer to count, with several processes done by hand; that doesn’t mean late results are flawed or fraudulent 5) People voting by mail are disproportionately Democrats, so neither in-person ballots nor mail ballots reflect the full vote count » Subscribe to NowThis: http://go.nowth.is/News_Subscribe » Sign up for our newsletter KnowThis to get the biggest stories of the day delivered straight to your inbox: https://go.nowth.is/KnowThis#Election#Politics#Trump#Biden#News#NowThis#NowThisNews

Why Europe is praying for Trump to lose the US election | DW Analysis
Almost four years of Donald Trump have left America’s European allies in a state of shock. He’s walked out of important treaties. He’s lashed out against America’s friends. He has cozied up to authoritarians. He’s abandoned the most important international treaties of our time. And he has even threatened NATO — the bedrock of America’s global power. It’s diplomatic disruption on an unprecedented scale. But even for America’s shell-shocked allies, it may not be all bad. So just how much has Trump disrupted transatlantic relations? Trump’s 100 Most Tremendous Scandals: The Definitive List | The Daily Social Distancing Show
Consider the following scenario: a highly infectious, sometimes deadly respiratory virus infects humans for the first time. It spreads rapidly worldwide, and the WHO declares a pandemic. The death toll starts to rise and everyone is asking the same question: when will the pandemic end? Alex Rosenthal details the three main strategies governments can use to contain and end a pandemic. [Directed by Visorama, narrated by Jack Cutmore-Scott, music by Bamm Bamm Wolfgang].
Viruses mutate and spread from person to person, a dynamic process that often leaves us playing catch-up when there’s a new disease outbreak. What if vaccines worked the same way? Virologist Leor Weinberger shares a scientific breakthrough: “hijacker therapy,” a type of medical treatment that could attack, modify and spread alongside a virus, potentially treating afflicted individuals and slowing the spread of infections like HIV.

But then there’s also the process of voting—where do people go, how do they cast their vote, and, most importantly, how long will it take. Well, the last one, turns out, is in HUGE contrast when it comes to the US and the rest of the world.
Apparently, Americans spend countless hours queuing and waiting for their turn to enter the voting booth and to cast their vote, whereas the rest of the world spends around as much time voting as one would spend waiting for the barista to make and deliver their coffee at Starbucks.
The internet is left surprised with how long Americans have to wait in line just so that they could vote
So, since it’s voting season in the US, a lot of Americans are sharing their considerably extreme voting experiences on Twitter. And then there’s Europeans and everyone else sharing their complete opposite experiences.
Turns out, people in the US often stand in line for hours, and I do mean literally hours
A number of US citizens shared how they stood in line for two hours at the very least to a whopping eleven hours just so that they could vote. Talk about dedication to your country!
While some stand in line for about 2 hours, Johnta Austin had to do so for a whopping 11 hours!
Here’s what a typical voting line looks like as shown by one Twitter user
And it doesn’t matter what weather it is either—people are committed
This prompted a response from people from other countries around the world: Canada, France, Germany, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, and others. It turned out, the amount of time citizens of these countries spent partaking in the voting process was around three minutes. At worst, it was fifteen minutes. See the stark contrast here?
More specifically, in Sweden, it was three minutes because there was a senior in a wheelchair in the queue; in France, hardly no waiting time and no more than 10-people queues; in Canada, no more than two minutes; in Australia, where voting is mandatory, no more than three minutes. The list goes on and on.
It wasn’t long until someone asked the question—how long does voting take outside of the US?
So, why are Americans practically breaking records with their queuing to vote? The short answer seems to be the lack of resources (polling locations, voting station employees, etc.) to deal with the huge demand.
The longer answer, though, is “it’s complicated.” Besides the fact that too many people show up and there aren’t enough polling stations and people managing them, there’s also the long voting process within the ballots, technical problems, lack of polling station staff training, underfunding of election administrations, and a number of other small problems that make up one huge issue.
For the most part, the average voter outside the US spends around 2–3 minutes and no more than 20 voting
Though, interesting to think, but some say that the long lines aren’t all that bad. It is said to be a celebration by those who endure them—it is a sign of patriotic enthusiasm. Others do think it’s more a form of sadism rather than a celebration, but nobody’s judging if it works for people.
What are your thoughts on this? Tell us your voting experience in your country in the comment section below!

Donald Trump is the only presidential candidate on the ballot who has publicly agreed that his own daughter is a ‘piece of ass.’ The bronze-gilded mogul is as notable for his multiple rape allegations and history of racist renting practices as he is for putting children in cages and shamelessly funding a campaign to execute 5 innocent Black teens. Literally translating to platform cedar, daisugi is a 14th- or 15th-century technique that offers an efficient, sustainable, and visually stunning approach to forestry. The method originated in Kyoto and involves pruning the branches of Kitayama cedar so that the remaining shoots grow straight upward from a platform. Rather than harvesting the entire tree for lumber, loggers can fell just the upper portions, leaving the base and root structure intact.
Although daisugi mostly is used in gardens or bonsai today, it originally was developed to combat a seedling shortage when the demand for taruki, a type of impeccably straight and knot-free lumber, was high. Because the upper shoots of Kitayama cedar can be felled every 20 years, which is far sooner than with other methods, the technique grew in popularity.
To see daisugi up close, watch this video chronicling pruning, felling, and transplanting processes. (via Kottke)
