One Minute Art History: A Hand-Drawn Animation in Myriad Historical Art Styles

February 9, 2018  Laura Staugaitis

Filmmaker and educator Cao Shu captures the history of art in an experimental short film that lasts for

less than one minute. Throughout the film, the central character goes through the small motions of everyday movements like checking the time and having a drink, with each frame rendered in a different art historical style. The film starts in ancient Egypt and progresses through Chinese ink paintings and Japanese block prints to Modigliani and Basquiat-style portraits. Cao renders a vast array of art styles in a manner that is evocative without being overworked. He lives and works in Hangzhou, where he teaches at the China Academy of Art.

Nearly half of Americans drink at least one soda every single day, in spite of all we know about the negative health effects of this indulgence. Of course, many of us think we’re getting off the hook by opting for a diet soda instead.

?????? ????????? is a Russian painter?, a master of whimsical and narrative art. Subjects include fantasy landscapes, russian folklore, theatre and mermaids.
Victor’s art can be highly symbolic with hidden clues to help decipher the images. His work can also be humbly simple with images and subjects of universal appeal.
They can be equally viewed for their vibrant textured colors that fill the canvas and contrast with the translucent glazes that make the paintings dance with light and pull in those who view it.
Victor breathes life into each work inviting the viewer into the painting as a separate universe, one filled with boldness, energy and rich hues.

Victor Nizovtsev was born in Central Siberia, in the city of Ulan-Ude near Lake Baikal. When Victor was a little boy his family moved from the Russian Federation to the Republic of Moldova. Victor grew up in Kotovsk, a town located in the heart of the region’s wine country and 30 miles southeast of the capital of Moldova, Chisinau.

At age nine he entered Kotovsk’s Art School for Children where he studied for four years.
In the 9th grade, he left home to study at Ilia Repin College for Art in Chisinau. He then studied at the prestigious Vera Muhina University for Industrial Arts in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Loving Vincent Teaser Trailer 2

Loving Vincent   Published on Nov 16, 2016

http://lovingvincent.com/ Loving Vincent is the world’s first fully painted feature film. Written & Directed by Dorota Kobiela & Hugh Welchman, produced by Poland’s BreakThru Films & UK’s Trademark Films. The film brings the paintings of Vincent van Gogh to life to tell his remarkable story. Every one of the 65,000 frames of the film is an oil-painting hand-painted by 125 professional oil-painters who travelled from all across Europe to the Loving Vincent studios in Poland and Greece to be a part of the production. As remarkable as Vincent’s brilliant paintings, is his passionate and ill-fated life, and mysterious death. No other artist has attracted more legends than Vincent van Gogh. Variously labelled a martyr, a lustful satyr, a madman, a genius and a layabout, the real Vincent is at once revealed in his letters, and obscured by myth and time. Vincent himself said in his last letter: ‘We cannot speak other than by our paintings’. We take him at his word and let the paintings tell the real story of Vincent van Gogh. Loving Vincent was first shot as a live action film with actors then hand-painted over frame-by-frame in oils. The final effect is an interaction of the performance of the actors playing Vincent’s famous portraits, and the performance of the painting animators, bringing these characters into the medium of paint. Loving Vincent stars famous faces to match the famous paintings they portray: “We cannot speak other than by our paintings” Written by Vincent van Gogh in a letter the week before his death In cinemas 2017…. https://twitter.com/LovingVincent https://www.facebook.com/lovingvincen… https://www.instagram.com/lovingvince…

Full Trailer for ‘Loving Vincent,’ a Feature-Length Film Animated by 62,450 Oil Paintings

January 20, 2017  Kate Sierzputowski

The full trailer for Loving Vincent (previously here and here), a film examining the life of Vincent van

Gogh, has finally been released after nearly six years of creative development. Each of the 62,450 frames for the feature-length film were hand-painted by 115 professional oil painters, and will integrate 94 of Van Gogh’s paintings into the animation. First captured as a live action film, the final oil paintings replicate each shot, recreating the entire film frame-by-frame. Loving Vincent is written and directed by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman, and produced by Poland’s BreakThru Films and UK’s Trademark Films. You look behind-the-scenes of the film in the video below, as well as keep up-to-date with release information on the film’s Twitter and Facebook.

A Suspended Neon Net Invites Guests to Bounce Stories Above a Paris Shopping Center

April 19, 2019    Kate Sierzputowski

A circular net in a bright shades of neon greens, yellows, and pinks hovers above the Paris-based shopping complex Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann in a new installation to celebrate the impending arrival of summer. The suspended playground gives visitors a chance to at once lay underneath the brilliant dome at the center of the building, while also watching shoppers bustling on the ground floor below. The installation is a part of the store’s Funorama initiative which in addition to the central play area, also includes “fun zones” such as old school arcade games, a VR experience, and foosball. In a story of scientific discovery, chemical biologist David R. Liu shares a breakthrough: his lab’s development of base editors that can rewrite DNA. This crucial step in genome editing takes the promise of CRISPR to the next level: if CRISPR proteins are molecular scissors, programmed to cut specific DNA sequences, then base editors are pencils, capable of directly rewriting one DNA letter into another. Learn more about how these molecular machines work — and their potential to treat or even cure genetic diseases.

This talk was presented at an official TED conference, and was featured by our editors on the home page.

About the speaker

David R. Liu · Chemical biologist

David R. Liu leads a research group that combines chemistry and evolutionary techniques to create revolutionary new medicines.

Economics PhD Sebastião Salgado only took up photography in his 30s, but the discipline became an obsession. His years-long projects beautifully capture the human side of a global story that all too often involves death, destruction or decay. Here, he tells a deeply personal story of the craft that nearly killed him, and shows breathtaking images from his latest work, Genesis, which documents the world’s forgotten people and places.

This talk was presented at an official TED conference, and was featured by our editors on the home page.

About the speaker

Sebastião Salgado · Photojournalist

Sebastião Salgado captures the dignity of the dispossessed through large-scale, long-term projects.

Gallery: A love letter to the planet

May 1, 2013 / Helen Walters

Ask photojournalists to name a peer they admire, and Sebastião Salgado’s name is sure to crop up. The Brazilian is renowned for the long-term projects he undertakes, devoting years at a time to documenting the story of a particular people or the evolution of a certain place. As he describes in the talk he gave at TED2013, his attention to detail and his personal attachment to his subjects caused health problems that nearly killed him.

Thankfully, he didn’t give up. His most recent project is Genesis, which he describes as “my love letter to the planet” and for which he spent eight years traveling the world to photograph humans, animals and nature in their native glory. (To read more details about Salgado’s process, see this rather lovely Q&A with TED photographer Ryan Lash.) The resulting black-and-white images include the astonishing shot, above, of a Southern right whale, which he photographed in the Valdés Peninsula in Argentina in 2004. Together, the series forms the focus of a book (including a vast, two-volume edition that costs $9,000 and comes complete with a wooden stand designed by the Japanese architect Tadao Ando; mere mortals can pick up a hardcover version for $69.99). There’s also a documentary, Shade and Light, filmed by Salgado’s son and Wim Wenders, and exhibitions in cities around the world.

The scale is appropriate. This is truly breathtaking work. And, for all that the scenes Salgado captures will likely feel alien to most of us, the images are imbued with no less than the spirit of humanity. If that sounds overblown, seriously, check these out:

The Nenet people, living deep within the Yamal peninsula in Siberia, inside the Arctic Circle. (2011.)

Light streams across an elephant disappearing into the bush. Kafue National Park, Zambia. (2010.)

Shot from Navajo Native American territory, this breathtaking image captures the junction of the Colorado and Little Colorado rivers, at the gateway to the Grand Canyon National Park, in Arizona in the United States. (2010.)

Look, ma! No hands! Salgado photographed these chinstrap penguins on icebergs between the Zavodovski and Visokoi islands in the South Sandwich Islands, near Antarctica. (2009.)

Women of the Zo’é village of Towari Ypy in Brazil. (2009.)

Teureum is the leader of the Mentawai clan, which lives on Siberut Island in West Sumatra. The shaman is preparing a filter for sago. (2008.)

Waura Indians fish in the Puilanga Lake near their village in the Upper Xingu region of Brazil’s Mato Grosso state. (2005.)

An iceberg photographed on the Antarctic Peninsula. Note the “castle tower,” at top right, apparently carved in the ice by wind erosion. (2005.)

The vast tail of a Southern right whale, photographed near Argentina in 2004.

How To Use Essential Oils To Keep Mosquitoes Away

Mosquitoes are a perennial problem, but it becomes especially acute during the warm summer months. What an unfortunate coincidence that this happens just when everything else is perfect for outdoor life. The buzz and bite of mosquitoes can spoil an outdoor party and ruin a family gathering out in the garden or patio. Of late, they have become more than a nuisance, what with the diseases–some of them quite debilitating and deadly–spread by these pesky insects.

Liberty – New York City Timelapse 4K

Michael Shainblum   Published on Jan 8, 2019

“Liberty – New York City Timelapse 4K” I vividly remember my first experience of New York City as a kid, before I became a photographer. The shear sense of scale, the incredible architecture and just the over all feeling I got walking around the city. That experience became one of the reasons I got into photography. Ever since then, it has been my dream to recreate that feeling into a short timelapse film. From the sensory overload of standing on a busy New York street corner. To the tranquility of standing on a skyscraper, like being on top of the world. This is a dedication to my favorite city in the world. “Liberty” Is a visual journey through New York City captured through timelapse and hyperlapse photography. The video consists of about 15,000 still photographs captured from 2016-2018. You can check out more images from the collection here: http://www.shainblumphoto.com/project… By Michael Shainblum http://www.shainblumphoto.com/ Soundtrack: James Everingham – What Once Was https://www.jameseveringham.com/

Google + closed their operation on April 2, of this year, 2019.  It is more than one week now.  The more time goes by, the more I miss people who followed my google + site, and people that contributed their time to post their work in different communities.  I decided to present on my website, the contents of last day of posts on my Google+ site, which I had been shared from other members of my community and other Google+ communities.

It is to remind me of human interaction and relationships around the world.  Even though I did not see them in person, communication and participation with their ideas, and work, can interconnect our feeling of kinship.  I wish all of them the best, and hope we may meet again in the future.  The lesson one learns is that we need more interactions and communications between all humans around the world to be able to find kinship with one another.  This communication can help reduce human conflict and war that occurs around the world, now, and in the future.

Genocide: Worse Than War | Full-length documentary | PBS

PBS  Published on Jun 4, 2010

This film is also available at http://to.pbs.org/hMZzq0 Watch Daniel Goldhagen’s ground-breaking documentary focused on the worldwide phenomenon of genocide, which premiered on PBS on April 14, 2010. To see this and other full-length PBS videos go to http://video.pbs.org. Please support your local PBS station at http://www.pbs.org/support “By the most fundamental measure — the number of people killed — the perpetrators of mass murder since the beginning of the twentieth century have taken the lives of more people than have died in military conflict. So genocide is worse than war,” reiterates Goldhagen. “This is a little-known fact that should be a central focus of international politics, because once you know it, the world, international politics, and what we need to do all begin to look substantially different from how they are typically conceived.” WORSE THAN WAR documents Goldhagen¹s travels, teachings, and interviews in nine countries around the world, bringing viewers on an unprecedented journey of insight and analysis. In a film that is highly cinematic and evocative throughout, he speaks with victims, perpetrators, witnesses, politicians, diplomats, historians, humanitarian aid workers, and journalists, all with the purpose of explaining and understanding the critical features of genocide and how to finally stop it.

Surreal Nature Illustrations by Tiffany Bozic  by Christopher Jobson

Tiffany Bozic is a self-taught artist based in Marin, CA who has spent the majority of her life observing the intricacies of the natural world.

Drawing inspiration from her extensive travels to wild places, and the research specimens at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, she composes beautiful large-scale nature illustrations blended with surreal and metaphorical themes.

To create her compositions, Bozic uses multiple layers of watered down acrylic paint on maple wood panels which give a realistic level of detail to each of her paintings.

See below a selection of Bozic’s work and find more on her website and Instagram.

What did Leonardo da Vinci’s “Last Supper” really look like? | DW Documentary

LeonardoDaVinci’s Last Supper4.20.19

DW Documentary

Published on Apr 18, 2019

Leonardo’s famous painting “The Last Supper” hides a secret: only 20 percent of the original work is still visible. In the style of a thriller, the documentary attempts to reconstruct what it originally looked like. Leonardo da Vinci was the epitome of the Renaissance Man. May 2019 marks the 500th anniversary of his death. The artist created world-famous works such as the fresco “The Last Supper” – perhaps the most famous. It is still in its original setting, on the wall of the dining room of the former Dominican convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan. The painting, which is 4.60 meters high and 8.80 meters wide, has been undergoing restoration for the last 19 years. But the restorers now know that only 20 percent of the original is visible today. So what did something that is the focus of so many legends originally look like? Our investigation also takes us to the small Belgian abbey of Tongerlo, where a mysterious copy of da Vinci’s work has been discovered. It is a painting on canvas that could have been commissioned from da Vinci’s workshop by the French King Louis XII. It has perhaps brought the researchers a step closer to the truth. _______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. Kinetic sculptor Bob Potts

March 28, 2013  by  Christopher Jobson

Kinetic sculptor Bob Potts creates beautiful kinetic sculptures that mimic the motions of flight and the oars of boats. Despite their intricacy the pieces are surprisingly minimal, Potts seems to use only the essential components needed to convey each motion without much ornamentation or flourish. There is very little information online about the artist, however blogger Daniel Busby managed to get a brief interview with the 70-year-old artist last year. If you liked this, also check the work of Dukno Yoon .

The Last Day Posts of Ing on Google+ Site April 1, 2019 Part 3

The Last Day Posts of Ing on Google+ Site April  1, 2019 Part 3

How landscape designer Piet Oudolf captures nature’s ‘emotion’

PBS NewsHour  Published on Apr 16, 2019

As spring takes hold, sparking thoughts of budding plants and new life, we explore how one of the world’s preeminent landscape designers approaches creating a garden. Piet Oudolf is perhaps best known for his work on New York City’s High Line, though he has designed gardens around the world. Jeffrey Brown met up with Oudolf at his home in the Netherlands to discuss the “emotion” of nature. The Last Day Posts of Ing on Google+ Site April 1,2019 Part 1

The Last Day Posts of Ing on Google+ Site April 1,2019 Part 1

The Solar-Powered Floating Schools in Bangladesh

Little Bare Feet Go To School

Tip toe, tip toe

Our little bare feet are marching to school
Faces smiling with happiness
We are going to school

“Where is your older sister?”
Is she coming to school too?”

“Oh, she has to stay home taking care of our baby sister.
But I will bring some story books for her.
She will come next week and I will stay home taking care of our sister.”

“Did you read Cinderella?
She lost her shoe.”

“I wish I had her Godmother
Then she can give me a pair of nice shoes.”

“Watch out!
Don’t step on that sharp rock; it will hurt your foot.”

“I can jump over it.
Come on, let’s jump over the rocks.
Oh it’s fun, fun, fun!”

“I wish I can come to school every day
I love to learn and read books.”

“I love our teacher.
She is so nice.”

“Let’s go, I don’t want to be late”

Tip toe, tip toe

Ing-On Vibulbhan-Watts, Tuesday, November 27, 2012, 12:02 A.M.

I usually visit BBC news, reading the news.  I enjoy seeing the, In Pictures, section.  I was so glad to see the pictures of the, Solar-Powered Floating Schools.  As I examined one of the pictures showing a group of children walking to the Solar-Powered Floating School, I noticed that none of the children had shoes.  They were all walking bare foot.  I felt so sad.  When I showed the picture to John I said, “Children here (USA) have so many pairs of shoes, some with fancy designs with light and other luxury shoes.  But some of the children here are still not satisfied and are unhappy with their lifestyle.  Kids here should see the children in this picture that have no normal school and even have no shoes.  I hope they have enough food to survive.”  John’s commented that, “But kids in the picture are smiling, they probably are happier than some of the kids here.”
“A project that provides solar-powered floating schools in Bangladesh has been nominated for an award at the world Innovation Summit in Education in Doha,Qatar.  This year’s shortlisted projects not only “transform education”, but also provide innovative financing of primary education.”

Banksy is an anonymous England-based street artist, vandal, political activist, and film director.[1] His satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine dark humour with graffiti executed in a distinctive stenciling technique. His works of political and social commentary have been featured on streets, walls, and bridges of cities throughout the world.[2] Banksy’s work grew out of the Bristol underground scene, which involved collaborations between artists and musicians.[3] Banksy says that he was inspired by 3D, a graffiti artist who later became a founding member of the English musical group Massive Attack.[4]

Banksy displays his art on publicly visible surfaces such as walls and self-built physical prop pieces. Banksy no longer sells photographs or reproductions of his street graffiti, but his public “installations” are regularly resold, often even by removing the wall they were painted on.[5] A small number of Banksy’s works are officially, non-publicly, sold through Pest Control.[6] Banksy’s documentary film Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010) made its debut at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.[7] In January 2011, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary for the film.[8] In 2014, he was awarded Person of the Year at the 2014 Webby Awards.[9]

Mars: Nasa lands InSight robot to study planet’s interior
By Jonathan Amos BBC Science Correspondent, Pasadena 1 hour ago
US space agency Nasa has landed a new robot on Mars after a dramatic seven-minute plunge to the surface of the Red Planet.
The InSight probe aims to study the deep interior of Mars, and make it the only planet – apart from Earth – that has been examined in this way.
The touchdown confirmation came through shortly after 19:50 GMT.
It ended an anxious few minutes in which the robot radioed home updates on its descent.
Nasa’s mission control in California erupted into cheers when it became clear InSight was safe on the ground.
The probe put down on a vast, flat plain known as Elysium Planitia, close to the Red Planet’s equator. The agency had dubbed it the “biggest parking lot on Mars”.

The first picture from the probe came back very quickly. It showed a smudged, fisheye view of Elysium Planitia.
The image was acquired with the translucent lens cap still in place on the camera. The dust kicked up in the landing obscured much of the view.
Better pictures will be taken in the coming days.

Touchdown triumph for Nasa's Mars probe

bbc.com What happened in the landing?
Media captionThe touchdown confirmation was celebrated by Nasa staff in California
Like all previous landing attempts at Mars, Insight’s race to the surface – the first attempt since 2012 – was a tense affair.
Stage by stage and metre by metre, the robot reported back its progress.
It had entered the atmosphere faster than a high-velocity bullet, using the combination of a heatshield, parachute and rockets to bring itself to a gentle stop.
Key to InSight’s continued survival now on the harsh surface of Mars is the deployment of its solar panels, which were stowed for the descent.
The robot absolutely has to start generating power to operate its systems and to warm equipment in the sub-zero temperatures that persist on the Red Planet.
Only when these immediate concerns are taken care of can Nasa begin to think about InSight’s scientific mission.
For more information please visit the following link:
https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-46351114

bbc.com What is different about this mission?
This will be the first probe to dedicate its investigations to understanding Mars’ interior.
Scientists want to know how the world is constructed – from its core to its crust. InSight has three principal experiments to achieve this goal.
The first is a package of Franco-British seismometers that will be lifted on to the surface to listen for “Marsquakes”. These vibrations will reveal where the rock layers are and what they are made of.
A German “mole” will burrow up to 5m into the ground to take the planet’s temperature. This will give a sense of how active Mars still is.
And the third experiment will use radio transmissions to very precisely determine how the planet is wobbling on its axis. Deputy project scientist Suzanne Smrekar uses this analogy: “If you take a raw egg and a cooked egg and you spin them, they wobble differently because of the distribution of liquid in the interior. And today we really don’t know if the core of Mars is liquid or solid, and how big that core is. InSight will give us this information.”

Touchdown triumph for Nasa’s Mars probe

Touchdown triumph for Nasa's Mars probe

bbc.com Why do we need to know this?
Scientists understand very well how Earth’s interior is structured, and they have some good models to describe the initiation of this architecture at the Solar System’s birth more than 4.5 billion years ago. But Earth is one data point and Mars will give researchers a different perspective on how a rocky planet can be assembled and evolve through time.
InSight chief scientist Bruce Banerdt said: “The small details in how planets evolve are what we think make the difference between a place like Earth where you can go on vacation and get a tan, and a place like Venus where you’ll burn in seconds or a place like Mars where you’ll freeze to death.”

 Mars InSight: Beating the odds

bbc.com nSight Diary: Beating the odds and landing on Mars
By Tom Pike Imperial College London 4 hours ago
Image copyright NASA Image caption Artwork: It takes 6.5 minutes to go from the top of the atmosphere to the surface
Prof Tom Pike from Imperial College London is part of the science team on the US-led InSight mission to Mars. His group has supplied tiny seismometers that will enable the Nasa lander to detect “Marsquakes”, which should show us the internal structure of the Red Planet. Here, just hours before InSight makes its bid to reach the surface of Mars, Prof Pike reveals his feelings.
As a scientist, I find it difficult to think that chance might play a role in achieving a breakthrough.
Napoleon is supposed to have asked “I know he’s a good general, but is he lucky?”
Any scientist would cringe if they thought they would be similarly questioned.
As for engineers, it would be regarded as an insult if their bridges or tunnels had to rely on luck not to collapse or cave in.
However, as we now wait for the InSight lander to hit the top of the atmosphere of Mars, I’m hoping for a bit of luck.

 InSight Steers Toward Mars

nasa.gov  NASA’s InSight lander has made its first course correction toward Mars.

InSight, short for Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport, is the first mission dedicated to exploring the deep interior of Mars.

The lander is currently encapsulated in a protective aeroshell, which launched on top of an Atlas V 401 rocket on May 5 from Vandenberg Air Force Base in Central California. Yesterday, the spacecraft fired its thrusters for the first time to change its flight path. This activity, called a trajectory correction maneuver, will happen a maximum of six times to guide the lander to Mars.

Every launch starts with a rocket. That’s necessary to get a spacecraft out past Earth’s gravity — but rockets don’t complete the journey to other planets. Before launch, every piece of hardware headed to Mars is cleaned, limiting the number of Earth microbes that might travel on the spacecraft. However, the rocket and its upper stage, called a Centaur, don’t get the same special treatment.

As a result, Mars launches involve aiming the rocket just off-target so that it flies off into space. Separately, the spacecraft performs a series of trajectory correction maneuvers guiding it to the Red Planet. This makes sure that only the clean spacecraft lands on the planet, while the upper stage does not come close.

Precise calculations are required for InSight to arrive at exactly the right spot in Mars’ atmosphere at exactly the right time, resulting in a landing on Nov. 26. Every step of the way, a team of navigators estimates the position and velocity of the spacecraft. Then they design maneuvers to deliver it to an entry point at Mars. That navigation team is based at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, which leads the InSight mission.

“This first maneuver is the largest we’ll conduct,” said Fernando Abilleira of JPL, InSight’s Deputy Mission Design and Navigation Manager. “The thrusters will fire for about 40 seconds to impart a velocity change of 3.8 meters per second [8.5 mph] to the spacecraft. That will put us in the right ballpark as we aim for Mars.”

Especially at the beginning of that cruise, navigators rely on NASA’s Deep Space Network (DSN) to track the spacecraft. The DSN is a system of antennas located at three sites around the Earth. As the planet rotates, each of these sites comes into range of NASA’s spacecraft, pinging them with radio signals to track their positions. The antennas also send and receive data this way.

The DSN can give very accurate measurements about spacecraft position and velocity. But predicting where InSight will be after it fires its thrusters requires lots of modeling, Abilleira said. As the cruise to Mars progresses, navigators have more information about the forces acting on a spacecraft. That lets them further refine their models. Combined with DSN tracking measurements, these models allow them to precisely drive the spacecraft to the desired entry point.

“Navigation is all about statistics, probability and uncertainty,” Abilleira said. “As we gather more information on the forces acting on the spacecraft, we can better predict how it’s moving and how future maneuvers will affect its path.”

Yesterday’s 40-second burn relies on four of eight thrusters on the spacecraft. A separate group of four is autonomously fired on a daily basis to keep the spacecraft’s solar panels trained on the Sun and its antennas pointed at Earth. While necessary to maintain orientation, these small, daily firings also introduce errors that navigators have to account for and counterbalance.

“Everyone has been working hard since launch to assess what these small forces have done to the trajectory,” said Allen Halsell of JPL, InSight’s navigation team chief. “People have worked lots of hours to look at that. For engineers, it’s a very interesting problem, and fun to try to figure out.”

When the spacecraft is just a few hours from Mars, the planet’s gravitational pull, or gravity well, will begin to reel the spacecraft in. At that point, InSight’s team will prepare for the next milestone after cruise: entering Mars’ atmosphere, descending to the surface and sticking InSight’s landing.

JPL, a division of Caltech in Pasadena, California, manages InSight for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington. InSight is part of NASA’s Discovery Program, managed by the agency’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. The InSight spacecraft, including cruise stage and lander, was built and tested by Lockheed Martin Space in Denver.

Is tourism harming Venice? | DW Documentary
DW Documentary
Published on Jul 2, 2018
Venice is threatened by mass tourism. Some 30 million visitors a year come to the city in Italy, making their way through the narrow streets. With an infrastructure more and more tailored to the needs of tourism, the city’s remaining residents feel left behind. During high season an influx of up to 130 thousand tourists a day means the city authorities have scant resources to cater for the more mundane needs of residents. A constant flotilla of small boats ferry passengers between city landing stages and giant cruise liners moored in the lagoon. Air quality in Venice is often worse than busy city centers. Within the last generation the number of residents has dropped by nearly a third. The Rialto Bridge and St Mark’s Square have become the main attractions in this Venetian Theme park providing locals with jobs in the tourist sector, but little else. Rents are sky high, Airbnb rules the roost. More and more historical buildings have been taken over by hotels. Shops, bars and restaurant cater almost exclusively to tourists. But residents are fighting back and now there are over 30 local initiatives trying to stem the tides of mass tourism. _____ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. Terms like friendship and love are complex as is and what if I brought a philosophy to understand them
PHILOSOPHY is the art of asking the right QUESTIONS and the answers will appear as good as your questions are. For some time now I have held that making friends was about TRAILS. Though this is still true, for after all we are friends with what is similar kind of human trash, it occurs to me what do you do to hold on to these friends. The concept of trail actually makes me a little SAD, for I had always held that making friends wasn’t about people who had done the same things and was the uninhibited joy of meeting and challenging minds.

It’s easy to understand how we get swayed by our own emotions unless we have a philosophy in place. We make friends based on our trails, things we have done, what we relate to and how we have encountered life. An interesting phenomena in trails is the Trails Criss cross or the meeting of trails from across the spectrum. When trails criss cross, the noises grow louder and it is time to make friends. The thought that looms large is what makes trails criss cross, is it contrived or a natural occurance.
The importance of simplifying things can’t be overstated, the genius is in knowing that you made an attempt for the moon and reached an asteroid midway ! : – ))

Today on the 29th of September 1901, Enrico Fermi was born. He was an Italian and naturalized-American physicist and the creator of the world’s first nuclear reactor, the Chicago Pile-1. He has been called the “architect of the nuclear age” and the “architect of the atomic bomb”.
He was one of the very few physicists in history to excel both theoretically and experimentally. Fermi held several patents related to the use of nuclear power and was awarded the 1938 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on induced radioactivity by neutron bombardment and the discovery of transuranic elements. He made significant contributions to the development of quantum theory, nuclear and particle physics, and statistical mechanics.
He was known for
> Demonstrating first self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction
> Fermi–Dirac statistics
> Fermi’s golden rule
> Fermi paradox
> Fermi method
> Fermi theory of beta decay
