There are three little kids, Bohdi, the youngest, is four years old. Next is Amelia who is seven years old, and the oldest one is eight-year-old Kai.  Amelia is Kai and Bohdi’s friend who has come to play with them.  They are enjoying watching children’s shows on the video monitor while Grandma Ing prepares their lunch.

When the food is ready, Kai and Bohdi help Grandma Ing set the table. Grandpa John joins in to have lunch with the threesome.  There is fresh roasted chicken from Mali, mother of Kai and Bohdi, while Grandma Ing cooks some uncured turkey bacon with no preservatives, and spaghetti, which is a favorite food for the kids.

Kai loves fresh Romain lettuce, tomatoes and other fresh vegetables.  Grandma Ing has picked some fresh basil and mint from the backyard garden.  Bohdi loves cooked broccoli with soy sauce, and Amelia loves the roast chicken.

The threesome enjoys their meal while day dreaming of their trip to visit our friends, Ann and Min.  This is mainly because we have told them that our friends have chickens, a rabbit, a very large goldfish in a pond, a cat and a dog, and some parrots in their house.   They live only a ten-to-fifteen-minute walk from our house.

After the meal, the threesome is ready for the trip to see the animals and new friends.  They walk along the street with Grandpa walking alongside them. They stop and look back at Grandma Ing who is slowly following so that she can record the trip with her camcorder.

Upon reaching Washington Square Park they enjoyed hunting for long wooden sticks to use as walking sticks just like Grandpa.  Amelia and Kai found the sticks they were looking for but Bohdi could not find one, so Kai gave his to Bohdi.  Then luckily Kai found a large one that Bohdi really liked and Bohdi gave the first one back to Kai.  Kai is a very good older brother to Bohdi.

They walked across the park to the corner of the street, and head up toward Min and Ann’s house.

Finally, they reach the old brownstone townhouse, climb the long front steps and ring the bell eager to see Min, Ann, and of course the animals.

They wait for a while for someone to greet them, but no one comes to the door.

Fast thinking Grandpa John tells them he has another friend, Bill, who lives close by as then come down the steps in disappointment.

Let’s go visit him, John says as they march along the sidewalk and cross a small lane.

They climb the steps of another brownstone house, and ring the bell three times, but again no one comes to the door.

They again descend the steps with disappointed faces.

They have to walk back home.

But passing Min and Ann’s house they decide to ring the bell again.

Are they going to be lucky this time?

Instead of heading home, the kids stop by Min and Ann’s house once more, hoping they will be lucky this time.

They run up the steps and ring the bell

They are so glad as Ann and Myles come out to greet them, the children’s luck is double because their son Myles is home too.

He is home from his studies for his doctorate in History.

John shows Min his new toy, it’s a walking stick that converts to a small seat for when he gets tired.  It’s his first time using it, as his back was quite bad on this particular day.

Ann, who just retired from teaching at Jersey City University, is very glad to see the kids.

She immediately shows them her Siamese cat.

Then she takes them to the backyard where she keeps her chickens.  There is also a pond for her very large goldfish.  Unfortunately, their rabbit died peacefully, after very long life for a rabbit.

Then she shows them a wall plaque in the garden that lists all of her pets that have died over the many years they have lived in their home.

John, Myles and I come out to join them in the garden.   But while I am photographing the garden, Ann and the kids disappear.     Then I hear little footsteps running up the stairs with Ann.  She takes them up to the third floor where there are lots of goodies for the kids to see.

My aching legs finally take me to the third floor where Ann is performing on the piano for the children.

They sit quietly on the sofa as Ann serenades them.

Then patiently, but with lots of enthusiasm, she walks to the side wall where there is a birdcage with three parrots.  Ann opens the cage and pops one of the parrots on top of her head.  It’s a beautiful sight to see her cleverly and joyfully entertaining the children.

There are so many exciting things they have never seen before including a toy train that moves from one side of the room to the other.

There is also an antique dolls house.

We return to the first floor where Min presents us with a bowl each of delicious sliced peaches.  I have never had such sweet and soft peaches.  I asked him how he makes them taste so good.  I usually keep my fruits in the refrigerator.

He said he keeps them out of the refrigerator and instead puts them in a brown paper bag.  Thanks Min I learned a good lesson as to how to keep my peaches as nice as yours.

Their home is treasure trove of surprising animals and objects.

Besides, I had delicious peaches, the children had a great time and I also enjoyed the artwork on the wall, especially Myles’ drawing.  I love the subjects, the colorful technique of the application of his artwork.  I love them and very much enjoy to view his artwork.

After that the children came down to the first floor.  Ann gave the kids a treat with mango popsicles.  This is a very good treat for any children.

Thank you very much Ann, Min and Myles for a wonderful afternoon.

 Grandma Ing,
