Heat-related deaths around the world increased by 74% from 1980 to 2016, Axios’ Marisa Fernandez writes from a study published yesterday in The Lancet.
More than 356,000 people died from extreme heat-related causes in just nine countries in 2019, a death toll that’s expected to grow as temperatures increase worldwide.
1.3 million deaths were related to cold — a 31% increase since 1990.
Heat stress can lead to stroke, organ and brain damage. A pair of studies out of the University of Washington found it also causes several types of heart disease, diabetes and chronic kidney disease.

The Sagittarius arm of the Milky Way spirals out of our galaxy’s center, forming a swooping highway of gas that spans tens of thousands of light-years. This highway is dotted with the headlights of billions of stars, all seemingly moving along the same curvy track. But now, astronomers have found something unusual — a “break” in the arm, slashing perpendicularly through the spiral like a splinter poking through a piece of wood.
Spanning about 3,000 light-years, this stellar splinter makes up just a fraction of the Milky Way (which has a diameter of about 100,000 light-years). Still, the newfound break is the first major structure to be discovered disrupting the seemingly uniform flow of the galaxy’s Sagittarius arm, according to a study published online July 21 in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics.
Archaeologists in Poland have discovered a mass grave that the Nazis tried to destroy at the end of World War II, a new study finds.
The mass grave, filled with the remains of about 500 individuals, is linked to the horrific “Pomeranian Crime” that took place in Poland’s pre-war Pomerania province when the Nazis occupied the country in 1939. The Nazis killed up to 35,000 people in Pomerania at the beginning of the war, and they returned in 1945 to kill even more people, as well as to hide evidence of the prior massacres by exhuming and burning the bodies of victims.
Operators of satellite constellations are constantly forced to move their satellites because of encounters with other spacecraft and pieces of space junk. And, thanks to SpaceX’s Starlink satellites, the number of such dangerous approaches will continue to grow, according to estimates based on available data.
SpaceX’s Starlink satellites alone are involved in about 1,600 close encounters between two spacecraft every week, that’s about 50 % of all such incidents, according to Hugh Lewis, the head of the Astronautics Research Group at the University of Southampton, U.K. These encounters include situations when two spacecraft pass within a distance of 0.6 miles (1 kilometer) from each other.
In March, the U.S. Space Force’s 18th Space Control Squadron (18SPCS) reported the breakup of Yunhai 1-02, a Chinese military satellite that launched in September 2019. It was unclear at the time whether the spacecraft had suffered some sort of failure — an explosion in its propulsion system, perhaps — or if it had collided with something in orbit.
We now know that the latter explanation is correct, thanks to some sleuthing by astrophysicist and satellite tracker Jonathan McDowell, who’s based at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Chinese astronomers hope to establish a major observatory program on the roof of the world, the Tibetan Plateau, with new research arguing for pristine observing conditions nestled in the uplands.
The analysis focuses on a study site near Lenghu Town in Qinghai Province at an altitude of more than 2.5 miles (4.2 kilometers) and some 1,900 miles (3,000 km) west of Beijing. In the paper, the scientists argue that three years of monitoring shows conditions on par with those at some of the most renowned scientific outposts on Earth.
Scientists used an unconventional method of creating nuclear fusion to yield a record-breaking burst of energy of more than 10 quadrillion watts, by firing intense beams of light from the world’s largest lasers at a tiny pellet of hydrogen.
Researchers at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Northern California said they had focused 192 giant lasers at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) onto a pea-size pellet, resulting in the release of 1.3 megajoules of energy in 100 trillionths of a second — roughly 10% of the energy of the sunlight that hits Earth every moment, and about 70% of the energy that the pellet had absorbed from the lasers. The scientists hope one day to reach the break-even or “ignition” point of the pellet, where it gives off 100% or more energy than it absorbs.
Physicists have created the first ever two-dimensional supersolid — a bizarre phase of matter that behaves like both a solid and a frictionless liquid at the same time.
Supersolids are materials whose atoms are arranged into a regular, repeating, crystal structure, yet are also able to flow forever without ever losing any kinetic energy. Despite their freakish properties, which appear to violate many of the known laws of physics, physicists have long predicted them theoretically — they first appeared as a suggestion in the work of the physicist Eugene Gross as early as 1957.
A female of the world’s largest squid — sometimes called the “kraken” after the mythological sea monster — that was caught off the coast of Japan apparently had just one amorous encounter in her lifetime.
The female had sperm packets from just one male giant squid embedded in her body, which surprised researchers. Because giant squid are solitary creatures that probably run across potential mates only occasionally, scientists expected that females would opportunistically collect and store sperm from multiple males over time.
Scientists recently grew mini brains with their own sets of “eyes,” according to a new study.
Organoids are miniature versions of organs that scientists can grow in the lab from stem cells, or cells that can mature into any type of cell in the body. Previously, scientists have developed tiny beating hearts and tear ducts that could cry like humans do. Scientists have even grown mini brains that produce brain waves like those of preterm babies.
Now, a group of scientists has grown mini brains that have something their real counterparts do not: a set of eye-like structures called “optic cups” that give rise to the retina — the tissue that sits in the back of the eye and contains light-sensing cells, according to a statement.
West Antarctica is one of the fastest-warming regions on Earth. For evidence, you need look no further than Thwaites Glacier — also known as the “Doomsday Glacier.”
Since the 1980s, Thwaites has lost an estimated 595 billion tons (540 billion metric tons) of ice, single-handedly contributing 4% to the annual global sea-level rise during that time, Live Science previously reported. The glacier’s rate of ice loss has accelerated substantially in the past three decades, partially due to hidden rivers of comparatively warm seawater slicing across the glacier’s underbelly, as well as unmitigated climate change warming the air and the ocean.
Now, new research suggests that the warming ocean and atmosphere aren’t the only factors pushing Thwaites to the brink; the heat of the Earth itself may also be giving West Antarctica’s glaciers a disproportionately nasty kick.
The saying “once in a blue moon” is especially pertinent this week: This Sunday (Aug. 22), the full Sturgeon Moon is expected to impress skygazers, particularly because of its “blue” designation.
Typically, the term “Blue Moon” refers to the second full moon within the same month. The last one rose on Oct. 31, 2020, when an eerie Blue Moon lit up the night sky on Halloween. But there’s a lesser-known definition, dating to 1528, which applies to the third full moon in a season with four full moons, according to NASA.

Axios AM Deep Dive
By Mike Allen, Apr 03, 2021
Good afternoon and welcome to a Deep Dive by the Axios business team, led by managing editor Aja Whitaker-Moore, on the Federal Reserve — one of the most important economic stories in the world.
· For more on how the Fed has changed the economy and our lives, check out this episode of the “Axios Re:Cap” podcast with Axios’ Dan Primack, Felix Salmon and Courtenay Brown.
2. Fed takes on race and climate

Historicallyuntouchable issues — like climate change and race — are now on the table for the Fed as it wades further into uncharted territory, writesAxios Closer author Courtenay Brown.
Why it matters: The about-face has implications for how one of the world’s most influential economic bodies steers policy and regulates the nation’s banks.
The Fed recently set up two committees to look at the impact of climate change on the economy and banks.
· It may feel small, particularly for issues that have threatened and plagued the country for years.
· But it’s a big deal for an institution that rarely — if ever — spoke publicly about these issues, let alone interwove them into considerations about the economy.
On climate: The Fed is behind its peers around the globe where climate change is less politicized.
On race: Fed officials have implied that the national unemployment rate wouldn’t be the only jobless measure they look at when measuring the health of the economy.
· The latest: Sen. Pat Toomey, the top Republican on the powerful Senate Banking Committee, warned this week of “mission creep” at the Fed’s regional banks, pointing to their research on topics like climate change and racial justice.
Capitol Police officers lower the flag over the U.S. Capitol to half-staff in honor of William “Billy” Evans, an 18-year Capitol Police officer. Evans died yesterday after a 25-year-old rammed his sedan into a barricade.
· The attack once again put the city on edge, after threats stemming from the deadly insurrection in January had started to wane, the WashPost reports.

The driver emerged with a knife, and started running at two officers. Authorities shot the suspect, who died at a hospital.
The suspect, Noah Green, described himself on Facebook as a follower of Louis Farrakhan, leader of the Nation of Islam, per the N.Y. Times.
7. Brace for 17-year cicadas

In a few weeks, billions of periodical cicadas are predicted to emerge in parts of the eastern U.S. after 17 years underground, managing editor Alison Snyder writes in Axios Science.
· Brood X is one of the largest of 15 groups of cicadas that come out en masse in the U.S. at various intervals.
· Once the soil temperature reaches 64°F, typically in late April or early May, billions of noisy cicadas will emerge, mate and lay eggs — all within four to six weeks.
What we’re watching: D.C. could be the “main stage” for the 17-year swarm, the Washington Post reports:
Georgia and other Southern states will probably be where they first emerge around the end of March, experts say. But residents of the Washington area are standing at ground zero. The District, Maryland and Virginia are likely to host more of these animals than any other of the 14 states that share the experience.

Japan’s famous cherry blossoms bloom early as climate warms
By MARI YAMAGUCHI
March 30, 2021
TOKYO (AP) — Japan’s famous cherry blossoms have reached their flowery peak in many places earlier this year than at any time since formal records started being kept nearly 70 years ago, with experts saying climate change is the likely cause.
Japan’s favorite flower, called “sakura,” used to reach their peak bloom in April, just as the country celebrates the start of its new school and business year. Yet that date has been creeping earlier and now most years the blossoms are largely gone before the first day of school.
This year peak bloom was reached on March 26 in the ancient capital of Kyoto, the earliest since the Japan Meteorological Agency started collecting the data in 1953 and 10 days ahead of the 30-year average. Similar records were set this year in more than a dozen cities across Japan.

Some say it is the earliest peak bloom ever based on records from historic documents, diaries and poetry books from Kyoto. Osaka Prefecture University environmental scientist Yasuyuki Aono, who tracks such documents, said the earliest blooms he has found before this year were March 27 in the years 1612, 1409 and 1236, though there are not records for some years.
“We can say it’s most likely because of the impact of the global warming,” said Shunji Anbe, an official at the observations division at the Japan Meteorological Agency.
The agency tracks 58 “benchmark” cherry trees across the country, and this year 40 of those already have reached their peak bloom and 14 have done so in record time. The trees normally bloom for about two weeks each year from first bud to all the blossoms falling off.
Cherry trees are sensitive to temperature changes and the timing of their blooming can provide valuable data for climate change studies, Anbe said.

According to the agency data, the average temperature for March in Kyoto has climbed to 10.6 degrees Celsius (51.1 F) in 2020 from 8.6 C (47.5 F) in 1953. So far this year’s average March temperature in Japan has been 12.4 C (54.3 F).
Sakura have deeply influenced Japanese culture for centuries and regularly been used in poetry and literature with their fragility seen as a symbol of life, death and rebirth.

Does Vitamin D help with Immunity? || Vitamin D and Covid 19
Does Vitamin D help with Immunity? || Vitamin D and Covid 19 #covid#covid19#coronavirus COVID Update Today by Doctor Mike Hansen (YouTube Video Playlist) https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list… Hopefully, YT does not take this video down, as it’s all based on medical studies. If they keep doing this, I will have to upload my videos to a different website. The Vitamin D supplement that I take: https://amzn.to/2zjaqqb Mentioned Video: Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) and Vitamin D2 (Ergocalciferol) and Calcitriol Video Link: https://youtu.be/yf8uYzgMsEw So what does not having enough vitamin D have to do with COVID 19? And IF insufficient vitamin D levels CAUSE more severe disease, why is that? Well, I have to first clarify that it’s not proven that insufficient vitamin D levels lead to worse outcomes. But while it hasn’t been proven, it also certainly hasn’t been disproven. And there is more and more compelling evidence suggesting that lower levels lead to worse outcomes. And there’s no question that vitamin D plays an important role in our immune system. More and more studies are coming out that are sorting out its exact role in this capacity. But the link between poor vitamin D status and risk of certain infections remains cloudy. In 2017, a meta-analysis study consisted of 25 different randomized trials with about 11,000 patients in total, evaluating the incidence of acute respiratory infection. Vitamin D supplementation reduced the percentage of patients experiencing an acute respiratory tract infection. The incidence of URTI in the vitamin D group was 40.3%, compared to 42.2% in the placebo group. In a subgroup analysis, vitamin D supplementation was most effective in patients with vitamin D levels less than 10 ng/mL and those treated daily or weekly smaller doses instead of a huge single dose. The takeaway from this meta-analysis study is that being vitamin d deficient probably makes people more prone to getting upper respiratory infections and should take supplemental vitamin D. But people who have low levels should be taking supplemental vitamin D regardless. Vitamin D has major effects on nearly all our immune system cells, including dendritic cells, macrophages, and T and B lymphocytes. These immune cells have a receptor that binds to vitamin D, called the vitamin D receptor, or VDR. Here are some questions we still need answers to: 1) what level of vitamin D is adequate to protect against or minimize the impact of COVID 19? 2) What level of vitamin D is considered too high 3) should more and more people get their vitamin D levels checked, especially during this pandemic, when fewer and fewer people are physically going to the doctor? 4) should people just supplement themselves? If so, how much? These are all tough questions to answer, especially because we won’t have RCT results for vitamin D anytime soon. Given that low dose, vitamin D is pretty darn safe, it seems quite reasonable for people to take a low dose supplement, especially if they think they might not be getting enough from sunlight or their diet. Of course, ideally, you want to have a discussion with your doctor if possible. A common question is, How much Vitamin D should I take a day? Personally, I take 1,000 IU per day. I know that I’m not going to run anywhere near toxic levels of vitamin D with that dose, while at the same time, I know that I won’t be vitamin D deficient. For about two years, Italian photographer Gabriele Galimberti had been visiting boys and girls around the globe to capture their portraits with their most prized possession — toys. From Texas to India, Malawi to China, Iceland, Morocco, and Fiji, Galimberti recorded the spontaneous and natural joy that unites kids despite their diverse backgrounds. Whether the child owns a veritable fleet of miniature cars or just a single stuffed monkey, the pride that they have is moving, funny, and thought-provoking.
“I started this project almost by chance!” Galimberti told Bored Panda. “The first photo that I took for this series was in Tuscany, it’s the one with the girl and the cows in the background. She’s the daughter of one of my best friends. He asked me to photograph her, so I went to their house and she was playing with the cows. I thought that situation was really nice and so I decided to take a photo of that moment. I asked her to pose together with her toys and with the cows in the background. Then I really loved the result and some months later, when I had the possibility to start my trip around the world, I decided to take the same kind of photo in every country that I was going to visit.”
Galimberti traveled the world in 2012-2013. At that time, he was working for one of the biggest Italian magazines, D La Repubblica. He was doing a story for the magazine about CouchSurfing and visited 58 countries using the Internet platform. Every week, he had a page on the magazine to report his trip and was publishing a portrait of the couchsurfer that was hosting him at the time.
“All the children that I have photographed are somehow connected to the couchsurfers that have hosted me. They are their children, their nephews, or simply their neighbors.”
The kids look comfortable and relaxed in the photos and that’s probably because Galimberti took the time to earn their trust first. Mostly by playing with them. “I was really surprised to see how easy it was for children to understand my project!” He would spend anywhere from a couple of hours to a whole day getting to know the children before taking out his camera.
You can see a lot of differences in the photos but the thing that all of them have in common, according to Galimberti, is that they just love to play.

Enemies of the People: Trump and the Political Press
As America chooses its next president in the midst of a historic pandemic, FRONTLINE investigates whose vote counts — and whose might not. Subscribe on YouTube: http://bit.ly/1BycsJW In this documentary with Columbia Journalism Investigations and USA Today, New Yorker writer Jelani Cobb reports on allegations of voter disenfranchisement, how unfounded claims of extensive voter fraud entered the political mainstream, rhetoric and realities around mail-in ballots, and how the pandemic could impact turnout. With director June Cross, the Fred W. Friendly Professor of Media and Society at Columbia, and producer Thomas Jennings, Cobb scrutinizes one of the first elections held during the pandemic — Wisconsin’s April 2020 primary, which saw long lines, claims of disenfranchisement, an unprecedented number of absentee ballots and dueling legal battles between Republicans and Democrats. The film places the election within the context of America’s history around voting rights and suppression, and discovers lessons for the country as a whole as the November presidential contest approaches. #Election2020#WhoseVoteCounts#Documentary Watch “Whose Vote Counts” starting Tues., Oct. 20: https://to.pbs.org/3jecZef Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/frontlinepbs Twitter: https://twitter.com/frontlinepbs Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/frontline FRONTLINE is streaming more than 300 documentaries online, for free, here: http://to.pbs.org/hxRvQP Funding for FRONTLINE is provided through the support of PBS viewers and by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Judge Sullivan Issues Two GOOD Court Orders, 1 in DeJoy/Mail Sorting Machines Case & 1 in Flynn Case
Judge Emmett Sullivan Orders the Trump administration, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy and the US Postal Service to return to service the high-speed mail sorting machines that DeJoy decommissioned. In the Mike Flynn case, Judge Sullivan orders Bill Barr’s Department of Justice to review all filings, documents and evidence the DOJ has submitted to the court and certify that none of it has been altered, after DOJ was caught altering the notes of two of Trump’s perceived enemies, Peter Strzok and Andrew McCabe. DOJ claimed the alteration of the evidence was “inadvertent.” Judge Sullivan said the alterations were “unsettling.” Please consider becoming a #TeamJustice patron at: https://www.patreon.com/glennkirschner My podcast, “Justice Matters with Glenn Kirschner” can be downloaded where you get your podcasts. Donald Trump Will Not Flip a Single State in the 2020 Election
? Full analysis on the Trump University deposition: https://www.motherjones.com/deposition ? Full Trump “hot-mic” tape with commentary: https://youtu.be/SqNtc-t0Cr0 ? Trump deposition “hot-mic” tape highlights: https://youtu.be/fZw228yu0hI During the 2016 campaign, Donald Trump was burdened with federal lawsuits that accused him and his Trump University of defrauding students who had paid thousands of dollars to learn the supposed secrets of Trump’s financial success. As part of the lawsuit, Trump sat for a contentious six-hour deposition in Trump Tower on December 10, 2015. He subsequently managed to get the court to seal the video recording of the session. But Mother Jones has now obtained the full video of Trump’s deposition. The written transcript of the session was released in June 2016, but the video version includes several exchanges that likely would have not played well for Trump if they had become public when he was chasing votes. Had the video deposition been released during the campaign, it probably would have yielded ammo for anti-Trump ads. The video shows Trump parrying with the lawyer for the plaintiffs, Jason Forge, over various issues, including false statements made by Trump University employees and Trump’s own memory. Trump at one point griped, “It’s the most ridiculous lawsuit I’ve ever seen.” He claimed not to remember having boasted that he possessed one of the best memories in the world and repeatedly said he could not recall matters related to the fraud case. He downplayed false and misleading statements presented by Trump University instructors as merely “hyperbole,” refusing to label them “false.” He even disavowed a passage from one of his own books in which he had assailed educational institutions for committing “fraud.” Mother Jones was provided the video by a source who asked not to be identified. Art Cohen, who was a lead plaintiff in one of the lawsuits against Trump University and Trump, confirmed that this was the actual video of the deposition. (Last month, Mother Jones posted a video of a conversation that occurred during a break in these proceedings between Trump and Dan Petrocelli, Trump’s attorney, in which Trump boasted of threatening the Better Business Bureau to change the D grade it awarded Trump University to an A.) Trump University shut down in 2010. Though Trump vowed during the 2016 campaign that he would never settle the Trump U lawsuits, days after the 2016 election, he did just that. He paid the students $25 million, without acknowledging any wrongdoing. Watch NASA’s OSIRIS-REx Spacecraft Attempt to Capture a Sample of Asteroid Bennu
Let’s do this, OSIRIS-REx! Time to journey #ToBennuAndBack. Tune in to our live broadcast as our spacecraft descends to the surface of asteroid Bennu, touches down for a few seconds & attempts to capture regolith (rocks and dust) using a “Touch-And-Go,” or TAG, maneuver. The spacecraft must target Bennu’s rocky surface with great accuracy, touching down within a rocky area just 52 ft (16 m) in diameter. During the maneuver, the spacecraft and the asteroid will be approximately 207 million miles (334 million km) from Earth. Live coverage from Lockheed Martin’s facility in Denver, Colorado, with mission managers from the University of Arizona, Lockheed Martin, and NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center begins at 5 p.m. EDT. The spacecraft is scheduled to depart Bennu in 2021, and to deliver the collected sample to Earth on Sep. 24, 2023. It will be the first U.S. mission to carry samples from an asteroid back to Earth, and the largest sample returned from space since the Apollo era.
Guatemalan photographer Francisco Sojuel was already having an incredible evening as he climbed the Acatenango volcano. It was Christmas Eve 2019 and he’d settled in at the basecamp when he noticed something breathtaking in the night sky. In the early morning hours, just before sunrise, Sojuel looked up and saw the Moon surrounded by a ring of clouds. Incredibly, the clouds made it look like the Moon was “dressing up” like Saturn. Recognizing the unique quality of the moment, Sojuel fired off some shots and came away with a once-in-a-lifetime image.
In his photograph, we can see the Moon circled by the clouds as it hovers over the landscape. A silhouette of Pacaya volcano and the Guatemalan highlands fills out the lower portion of the image and enhances its drama. According to the photographer, the cloud is actually a cirrostratus cloud. These high-level, thin clouds are made of ice crystals. At certain angles, they create halos around the moon. Given that there’s no real halo around this Moon and the texture of the cloud is a bit fluffy, it might be a cirrostratus fibratus or a cirrus spissatus cloud. These are both denser and are often formed by strong winds.
Sojuel is known not only for his incredible landscape and adventure photography, which includes shooting live volcanos, but also his astrophotography. He takes in the night sky as he goes about his adventures, giving his own unique perspective on Central America’s starry sky.
See more of Francisco Sojuel’s beautiful astrophotography.

Recent reporting shows that the parents of 545 immigrant cannot be found. Trump Tax Case in Court AGAIN: Judge Neomi Rao, a McConnell judge, Shows Why Biden Must Add Judges
After serving for two years as a Trump administration official, Trump nominated and Mitch McConnell crammed through the confirmation process, Neomi Rao as a judge on the DC Federal Circuit Court of Appeals. Since becoming a judge in 2019, her opinions have been widely criticized and even “mocked” for their invariably pro-Trump leanings. But in today’s court argument on the enforceability of Congress’s subpoena for Trump’s tax returns, Rao was downright demeaning and disrespectful to the House of Representatives, calling it “a co-equal HALF branch of government.” Rao is a shining example of why Joe Biden should add additional judges to the federal circuit courts of appeal. There is a corruption at the heart of American politics, caused by the dependence of Congressional candidates on funding from the tiniest percentage of citizens. That’s the argument at the core of this blistering talk by legal scholar Lawrence Lessig. With rapid-fire visuals, he shows how the funding process weakens the Republic in the most fundamental way, and issues a rallying bipartisan cry that will resonate with many in the U.S. and beyond.

Kristen Welker, a White House correspondent for NBC News and a co-anchor of Weekend Today, will moderate the final 2020 presidential debate between President Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden on Thursday in Nashville, Tennessee.
Welker interned with the Today show while a student at Harvard University and has been with NBC full time since 2005. She started as a reporter and weekend anchor at NBC’s affiliate station in her hometown of Philadelphia, then became a correspondent at the West Coast headquarters of NBC News in 2010. Welker, who has been a White House correspondent for the network since 2011, was named co-anchor of Weekend Today in January 2020.
On Friday, the Commission on Presidential Debates announced the six topics for the final face-off between Trump and Biden: fighting Covid-19, American families, race in America, climate change, national security, and leadership. But just as they did for the first presidential debate, the subjects have already sparked some controversy.
The Trump campaign sent a letter to the commission on Monday, demanding a bigger focus on foreign policy. The president sees foreign policy as a winning issue for him, as he can discuss his administration’s efforts to normalize relationsbetween Israel and the United Arab Emirates — and, potentially, raise conspiracy theories about Biden, his son Hunter, and Ukraine — anddeflect attention from his mishandling of the Covid-19 pandemic. Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien accused the commission of “pro-Biden antics.”
Biden’s national press secretary, TJ Ducklo, said in a statement that both campaigns agreed months ago that it would be up to the moderator to select the topics.
Trump and his campaign criticizing a debate moderator is par for the course, although this time they’re getting started before the debate itself. At a rally in Arizona on Monday, the president called Welker a “radical Democrat,” saying she will be “no good.” That followed his tweet from last Saturday, when he said Welker has “always been terrible [and] unfair, just like most of the Fake News reporters.”
Welker works for the same network as Savannah Guthrie, who moderated Trump’s town hall event last week to widespread commendation. As Vox’s Emily Stewart explained, Guthrie “came in ready”:
She didn’t let Trump just drone on in silence, but she also didn’t come back at him with a list of facts. She just asked him to explain himself, to really answer her question, to just say the thing that is true.
Guthrie was blasted on right-wing media after the event, with Sean Hannity of Fox News saying she was nasty to Trump.
Whether Welker will have a similar experience with both men on stage remains to be seen. She was one of four moderators for a Democratic primary debate in fall 2019, but this will be her first time moderating a general-election debate. Fox News anchor ChrisWallace and USA Today Washington bureau chief Susan Page, who moderated the first presidential debate and the vice presidential debate, respectively, struggled to assert control at times, so the pressure will be on Welker to help maintain order.
The debate commission made a recent rule change that should help her in that area: Both Biden and Trump will have two uninterrupted minutes to make their opening remarks for each discussion topic, during which time the other candidate’s mic will be turned off. After that, they’ll be allowed to talk back and forth about the issues.

Presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden unveiled the first major plank of his economic agenda Thursday, detailing a moderate proposal to use government purchasing to spur manufacturing in sectors such as clean energy, infrastructure and health care. The former vice president delivered a speech outside his childhood hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania, as he launched what his campaign is calling its “build back better” agenda, which Biden said would pump federal dollars into purchasing and research and development “in a way not seen since the Great Depression and World War II.” Other planks his campaign said will be detailed in the coming weeks include clean energy, the “caregiving economy,” such as child-care and domestic workers, and racial equity. “Throughout this crisis, Donald Trump has been almost singularly focused on the stock market — the Dow and the Nasdaq. Not you and not your families,” Biden said. “If I am fortunate enough to be your president, I’ll be laser-focused on working families, middle-class families like I came from here in Scranton, not the wealthy investor class. They don’t need me; working families do.” #Bidfen#CNN#News

How incompetent is Donald Trump? Interview with John Bolton | Conflict Zone
John Bolton dicusses his time as national security adviser and his impressions of US President Donald Trump with DW Conflict Zone. Four months before the next US presidential election, Donald Trump’s poll numbers are in a slump. Disaffected conservatives call him incompetent and are campaigning against the Republican president, citing the upward curve of new coronavirus cases in the US, the millions of unemployed Americans, and the protests and racial tension in the wake of George Floyd’s killing. They echo Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, who says Trump’s leadership is inadequate. One of his three former national security advisors, John Bolton, joined DW’s Tim Sebastian to discuss his impressions of President Trump on Conflict Zone. He has just releases his book on the issue ‘The Room Where It Happened: A White House Memoir’ 00:00:00 Intro 00:01:10 Trump’s integrity 00:03:45 Obstruction of justice 00:05:30 Working for Trump 00:08:30 Corrupted government 00:09:25 Trump and dictators 00:10:15 Kim Jong un 00:12:15 Vladimir Putin 00:14:45 Russian bounties for the Taliban 00:17:30 Jamal Khasogghi 00:19:45 Iran nuclear deal 21:45 Ukraine and Impeachment More background and key quotes: https://p.dw.com/p/3eyIE The picture Bolton paints in his latest book, “The Room Where It Happened,” is filled with disturbing takes of the current US president: dubious offers to strongmen Trump admires and a president who does not even read, let alone study briefing materials on complex national security issues. Bolton characterizes White House infighting as part of Trump’s managerial style. “I think that Trump is very mistrustful of not only the bureaucracy as a whole, but even his own staff.” “He still hasn’t fully appreciated what it means to be president of the United States,” Bolton added. When asked about Trump’s admiration of dictators, Bolton demurred: “I’m not a shrink, I don’t psychoanalyze people.” But he did offer this: “Trump, in a sense, envied the Xi Jinpings and the Vladimir Putins. He liked talking to ‘big guys.’ You know, ‘big guys’ get together and they do ‘big guy’ things. I think it was that simplistic.” Does Trump fear the Russian president, Sebastian asked. “I don’t think he’s scared of him,” Bolton answered, and cautioned against exaggeration. “There’s plenty to criticize, but when people stretch beyond what they need to to make the criticism, it doesn’t strengthen the case against Trump; it weakens it. It emboldens many of his supporters to say we’re victims of a conspiracy.” Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/user/deutsche…

ICU Doctor: Top 10 Things I learned Treating Coronavirus Patients | COVID-19 #coronavirus#covid19#covid_19 Some intensive care units in various hospitals throughout this county have designated units for COVID-19 patients. As an intensive care doctor, I’ve been seeing a lot of COVID-19 patients in our designated Coronavirus ICU. It’s one thing to read about Coronavirus in the medical literature, but to be actually seeing real patients with this disease is another experience altogether. There are a lot of things I’ve learned, but for this video, I’ll focus on the top 10 that stand out to me. So, starting at the bottom with number 10, is, signs/symptoms. The most common symptoms that I’m seeing are fever, cough, shortness of breaths, and body/muscle aches. I haven’t seen many patients with the other symptoms we often hear about, such as loss of taste and smell, or nausea, and diarrhea. I have not seen any rashes related to Coronavirus, probably because I only see adult patients. I will say that even though confusion and delirium are very common in the ICU in general, there does seem to be more of that with Coronavirus. A lot of COVID-19 patients who require hospitalization have low levels of vitamin D. And this is consistent with what we are seeing in a lot of recent studies that have been coming out. But of course, correlation doesn’t necessarily mean causation, so does it just so happen that a lot of patients who have moderate or severe COVID, happen to have low vitamin D levels? Maybe, maybe not. And does that mean that we should give every hospitalized patient with Coronavirus big doses of vitamin D when they hit the door? Maybe. And does that mean people, in general, should supplement with vitamin D? And what is the ideal level of vitamin D for the population, especially when it comes to COVID-19? Should we be targeting the current general recommendation for everyone, irrespective of COVID-19, with a goal of 20 ng/ml? or should we aim for higher, like 30, or perhaps 40? No one knows for sure the answers to these questions. But there are studies being done on this. And as we speak there are 3 RCT for vitamin D and Coronavirus. This virus is VERY contagious. One of my patients was in the hospital for unrelated reasons. She actually had sepsis due to infarcted gut, meaning part of her intestine was not getting enough blood flow. It was severe enough to the point that some of the tissue in her intestine had died. When this happens, the bacteria that live in the intestine can then invade the walls of the intestine, and get into the bloodstream. This is bad news because these bacteria can then spread throughout the body, and this is known as sepsis. Besides antibiotics, this treated with surgery, where the dead gut tissue is removed, meaning part of the intestine is taken out. And this is what happened to her. And she got better. But after she initially got better, she started having more difficulty with her breathing. Her oxygen levels were dropping, despite us giving her more and more oxygen. So we got a CXR, and later a CT scan of the chest, which showed bilateral infiltrates, meaning areas of inflammation in both lungs. And this is the pattern we typically see with COVID-19 pneumonia, where it tends to go to the periphery of the lungs and also more so at the bottom of the lungs. Since then, we continue to add shows, voices, and opportunities for activism, because it’s up to all of us to do our part to build a better world. That’s it. End of mission. Hawaiian Crew Goes On A 48-Day Expedition And Sets Record For Largest Haul Of Plastic Removed From The Great Pacific Garbage Patch
Plastic became globally mass-produced 65 years ago and since then, the amount of plastic we use has skyrocketed. So has plastic pollution. In 2015, 387 million tons of plastic were produced compared to 2 million manufactured in 1950. The staggering overconsumption of this material has a devastating effect on the environment with our oceans suffering the worst by far. It has been estimated that 8 million pieces of plastic pollution find their way into the ocean every day, which adds up to the 5.25 trillion pieces that are currently there.
Recently, the Ocean Voyages Institute’s vessel came back after a 48-day expedition, successfully removing 103 tons (206,000 lbs.) of trash from the Pacific ocean
Plastic waste results in the death of 100 million marine animals annually and it’s estimated that by 2050, it will greatly outnumber the fish in the ocean.Image credits: Ocean Voyages Institute
Without a doubt, we are losing our oceans, which are responsible for producing half of the world’s oxygen, to our excessive plastic consumption. Luckily, there are people who are trying to put a stop to this by cleaning the mess we all have caused, literally.
The crew has set a new record with the largest at sea clean-up in the Gyre to date
On June 23, the Ocean Voyages Institute’s marine plastic recovery vessel came back from a heroic voyage. After a 48-day expedition, 103 tons (206,000 lbs) of fishing nets and consumer plastics were removed from the Great Pacific garbage patch, also known as the Gyre and Pacific trash vortex.
“I am so proud of our hard-working crew. We exceeded our goal of capturing 100 tons of toxic consumer plastics and derelict ‘ghost’ nets, and in these challenging times, we are continuing to help restore the health of our ocean, which influences our own health and the health of the planet,” said Mary Crowley, founder and executive director of Ocean Voyages Institute.Image credits: Ocean Voyages InstituteImage credits: Ocean Voyages Institute
Thanks to Crowley’s effective methods to remove massive amounts of plastics from the ocean, the successful mission has removed 48 tons (96,000 lbs) during two ocean clean-ups in 2019.Image credits: Ocean Voyages InstituteImage credits: Ocean Voyages Institute
However, even after setting a new record for plastic clean-up this year, the Pacific Gyre, which is located halfway between Hawaii and California, still remains the largest area with the most plastic.Image credits: Ocean Voyages Institute

“In keeping with our commitment to environmental stewardship, Matson has been searching for a way to get involved in cleaning up the Pacific Gyre. We’ve been impressed with the groundbreaking efforts of Ocean Voyages Institute and the progress they’ve made with such a small organization, and we hope our support will help them continue this important work,” said Matt Cox, chairman and CEO.Go to the top
