Ducks and Geese

 Ducks and Geese

                                                Paddlings do paddlings dee

Little ducks and geese

Baking in warm afternoon sun

Step closer, quietly and still

Viewing the ducks and the geese

By the tree

Wobblings do wobblings dee

The ducks and the geese

On the same bank of the pond

The ducks wobbling by the geese

Cleaning their wings

Minding their own things

No fighting I see!

Geese and ducks

Inches away from each other

The big geese bodies

Bully no little ducks

Comfortable the ducks are

With other kinds

Sharing space

And food

Happy they are

Different species

Paddling together in the pond

Humans are the same species

But Christians fight with Christians,

Protestants fight with Catholics

In Northern Island

In Syria

Muslims fight with Muslims

Alawites with Sunnis

In Iraq

Shias fight with Sunnis

 Muslims fight with Christians

Jews fight with Muslims

Hindus fight with Muslims

Buddhists in Myanmar (Burma) fight with Muslims

Muslims fight with Buddhists

In southern Thailand

And other places

What is the matter with humans?

Unashamed, killing each other

Of the same kind

Ducks and geese in Branch Brook Park Pond

Coexist with each others

Paddlings do paddlings dee

Happy they are

Wobblings do wobblings dee

With their little tiny brains

Cleverer they are than humans

Humans are

Pity do, pity dumb

Weeping do and weeping dumb

Monarch and Swallowtail Butterflies

There were a few people who viewed my Golden Swallowtail Butterfly video asking me what is the difference between a Swallowtail Butterfly and a Monarch Butterfly?  This gave me an idea to show the pictures of a Swallowtail Butterfly and a Monarch Butterfly that I captured from our backyard garden this year (2013).  The following are some of the pictures of this Swallowtail Butterfly and the Monarch Butterfly and some short information about them from Wikipedia.

The Monarch Butterfly:  I captured photos of this butterfly in our backyard garden, Downtown Newark, New Jersey on Thursday, October 3, 2013.  I will produce a short video to upload on YouTube soon.

from Wikipedia

The Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is a milkweed butterfly (subfamily Danainae) in the family Nymphalidae. It is perhaps the best known of all North American butterflies. Since the 19th century, it has been found in New Zealand, and in Australia since 1871, where it is called the wanderer.[3][4][5] It is resident in the Canary Islands, the Azores, and Madeira, and is found as an occasional migrant in Western Europe and a rare migrant in the United Kingdom.[6] Its wings feature an easily recognizable orange and black pattern, with a wingspan of 8.9–10.2 cm (3½–4 in).[7] (The viceroy butterfly is similar in color and pattern, but is markedly smaller, and has an extra black stripe across the hind wing.) Female monarchs have darker veins on their wings, and the males have a spot called the androconium in the center of each hind wing.[8] Males are also slightly larger than female monarchs.

The monarch is famous for its southward late summer/autumn migration from the United States and southern Canada to Mexico and coastal California, and northward return in spring, which occurs over the lifespans of three to four generations of the butterfly. The migration route was fully determined by Canadian entomologists Fred and Norah Urquhart after a 38-year search, aided by naturalists Kenneth C. Brugger and Catalina Trail who solved the final piece of the puzzle by identifying the butterflies’ overwintering sites in Mexico. The discovery has been called the “entomological discovery of the 20th century”.[9] An IMAX film, Flight of the Butterflies, tells the story of the long search by the Urquharts, Brugger and Trail to unlock the secret of the butterflies’ migration.[10]

In previous years I saw quite a few Monarch butterflies stopping by our backyard garden to drink the nectar from our butterfly bush plants that we planted for the butterflies and bees.  One year we were very lucky to have eight monarch butterflies come to drink the nectar at the same time but usually we saw one at a time.  This year however I saw only a few Monarch butterflies.  I saw a butterfly on two occasions and ran to get my camcorder from the house.  When I returned both times the butterflies were gone.  Lucky on Thursday, October 3, 2013 this particular Monarch butterfly stayed more than half an hour.  It was difficult to capture an image because the flowers blocked the butterfly.

A few weeks ago NPR reported that there were much less Monarch butterflies this year.  There are many reasons but one of them is that chemical companies produce seed that can yield more crops.  Farmers in Iowa took more land to grow their crops.  This caused less milkweed trees to be grown along the route Monarch butterflies travel.  Monarch butterflies need milkweed trees to lay their eggs.  Also the pesticide may cause the destruction of Monarch butterflies.

I wish humans were more concerned about the conservation of our natural resources.  Humans should take some of the land for their survival and leave some for other creatures that live on earth with us.  If we take all for ourselves and leave nothing for animals and plants we will cause the extinction of some animals and plants.  What are we going to tell our children and future generations when they ask us why there are so few animals and plants left on earth for them to enjoy?

I feel happy when I see butterflies and bees stopping by our garden to drink the nectar prolonging their lives even for a short time.  Maybe people in the suburbs that have some land used for grass lawns can plant some trees that produce sweet nectar for bees and butterflies.  Humans can do a lot of good things if we are concerned about conservation and preserving nature for generations to come.  So let us get together spending time to do good work for everyone on earth.  Please do not waste time fighting with each other creating problems for millions people such as Shutting down Government (US) just to gain benefit for a small group of people or your personal career.

To All Syrians from the Golden Swallowtail Butterfly

Beautiful Golden Swallowtail Butterfly

Summersaults in the sky

Drinking sweet nectar

For the beautiful wings to fly

The golden wings span out

Showing the black accented lines

A highlight for your beautiful wings

Two perfect tails you have

But a broken wing

Knowing how far you came from

Do you pass by Syria lately?

No! No one cultivates the gardens

They are busy fighting with each other

No trees, no plants

No flowers giving me the nectar to drink

They are running away

From their homes and their land

One million children are refugees now

What are you doing Syrian’s people?

Everybody, stop fighting

Please come!

Plant your trees for butterflies and bees

Show your children how nice butterflies can be

They help to fertilize your plants

Producing fruits for your children to enjoy

Syrian people you have a long culture

Your arts and your country are beautiful

Do not ruin your ancestors’ good reputation

Preserve your culture for your children to grow

Show your children your fruitful gardens

And the beautiful Golden Butterfly will visit you

The butterfly says,

You will see no tears

No fear on your children faces

But the sound of your children’s laughter

The joy of seeing my beautiful wings

Everybody, stop using weapons

Please come!

To enjoy your tasty food

Your dance, your music, your arts

And your ancient civilization

We want to visit you

Show us how civilized Syrian Society can be

The Golden Swallowtail Butterfly was captured by me on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at our backyard garden in downtown Newark, New Jersey.  I would like to dedicate this video and Poem to all the children in Syria.

Swallowtail Butterfly from Wikipedia

Swallowtail butterflies are large, colorful butterflies in the family Papilionidae, which includes over 550 species.[1] Though the majority are tropical, members of the family occur on every continent except Antarctica. The family includes the largest butterflies in the world, the birdwing butterflies of the genus Ornithoptera.[2]

Swallowtails have a number of characteristic features; for example, on the prothorax a Papilionid caterpillar bears a repugnatorial organ called the osmeterium. The osmeterium normally is hidden, but when threatened, the larva everts it through a transverse dorsal groove[3] by inflating it with blood. It is a fleshy, forked structure and emits smelly secretions containing terpenes, which the larva typically tries to smear onto any attacker touching it.

The adults of some species have conspicuous posteriad prolongations of the hind wings in the region of the M3 vein. The forked appearance of these features as seen in the butterfly when resting with its wings spread, gave rise to the common name swallowtail. As for the formal name, Linnaeus chose Papilio for the type genus, Papilio being the Latin for a butterfly. For the specific epithets of the genus, Linnaeus applied the names of Greek heroes to the swallowtails. The type species: Papilio machaon honoured Machaon, one of the sons of Asclepius, mentioned in the Iliad.[4]

I saw about five Swallowtail Butterflies this year (2013).  Usually I saw only one or none in past years.  Several Swallowtail Butterflies lost one of their tails and some lost both of their tails.  I was lucky to see this Swallowtail Butterfly that I captured on my camcorder. It had two perfect tails but one wing was broken.  I imagine that this Swallowtail Butterfly probably came from far away and probably was very thirsty.  I am happy to be able to contribute my time cultivating my garden for butterflies and other animals enabling them to stop by and have some nutrition to nourish them along the way to their destination.

Shut It Down!  Shut It Down!

 Eric Canton, my pal

Dictate me!  Dictate me

Said John Boehner

Hey!  Rand Paul Come!

Whistling in my ear

We win!  We win!

We have more power than anyone

In this land

We can command the Shutdown of Government

Tea Party Republican and John Boehner with his tan skin

And perfect hairdo

Proudly declare

“We want fairness for American citizens.

American people told us so”

Unashamed!  Unashamed!

The poor and the government workers

Said with no voice

Hey! John Boehner, Eric Canton, Rand Paul

And all the other Republicans

You are all government workers too!

But you all get paid

You, law makers cleverly issued

Self’s protection, no matter what you want to do

Clever law makers are you?

You all get paid

Unashamed!  Unashamed!

The poor and the government workers

Said with no voice

Cut down the Food Stamp Fund

The Poor eat too much

The Republican said out loud

With kindness and God on their side

But wealthy pharmaceutical companies

Paying tax for medical devices

No cannot do

 Not fair, not fair

Said the Tea Party Republicans

And the rest of the Republicans

Quietly follow along with the Tea Party

We have to shutdown government

To protect the wealthy pharmaceutical companies

Shutdown Government!

Shut it down!

All the Republicans show their Power

Who are the government workers?

I do not know

Who care if the government workers

Waiting for the pay checks

For food, for rent, mortgages

Or medicine for sick children

I do not know

And I do not care

Said all the Republicans

We are all government workers too!

But we all get paid

We, law makers cleverly issued

Self’s protection, no matter what we want to do

We want to cut down the deficit

Said all the Republicans

Sixteen days shutting down the government

Cost the government more than twenty-four billion

Important government work lost for sixteen days

Let alone the reputation and credit of the country

President Barack Obama

Cannot go to the APEC CEO Summit in Indonesia

American Influence is lost

Trade by American corporations with Asian countries

Would be affected not only by the financial loss

But by the loss of jobs for American workers

All law makers should be concerned

Their job is to help the citizens

What is the consequence?

I do no know

Said Tea Party Republicans and John Boehner

And the rest of the Republicans agree

They proudly declare

Shutdown Government!

Shut it down!

Show them we have power!

Yes, we can!

I do not understand much about the laws and the country’s policy but as an uninformed  person I think it is dangerous to have one man, Mr. John Boehner have authority to prevent the democratic votes in the house of representative and be able to cause the shutdown the government.  How can the country do all the business that the government is supposed to do for the citizens?  How about if Mr. John Boehner wants to hold on to his authority to shutdown government for longer than sixteen days, maybe a year or two or longer then does everybody has to comply?  I think the country will be doomed if this happens.  Who are the people who made this law? They probably are the same group that allows special privileges for law makers to get paid even though others will suffer while waiting the a merciful decision by the Republican leader in the house.

I do not think this type of law is of benefit to any one even if the Democrats have the majority in the house and use the same tactics the Republicans.  Republicans will not like it if the leader of Democratic Party in control of the House behaves as Mr. John Boehner does.  Mr. Boehner wants to keep his job more than keep his reputation and helping the citizens including government workers.  Who is going to get into trouble?  I think not the wealthy law makers but all the citizens that law makers swear to help.  Law makers are supposed to help all citizens to have a better and more peaceful life.

Something needs to be changed in order not to cause suffering to citizens who are affected by the shutdown of the government directly or indirectly.  This shut down produces turmoil for the entire country and the world.  If the country is going to progress democratically, becoming a more civilized society, then law makers have to have integrity, honesty and be willing to serve all citizens.

The members of Congress are elected to help all citizens but not elected to cause problems.  In the past corrupt members of Congress have been sent to jail or punished in some other way.  But in some cases politicians were able to use their position to cause a lot of trouble for citizens.  For example, Senator Joseph McCarthy used the Senate Committee on Un-American Activities during the period from 1950 to 1954 to destroy innocent people who lost their jobs and some killed themselves.  He called them Communists and traitors with lies and false claims in a process now known as McCarthyism.

Someone mention to me that Ted Cruz looks a lot like Joseph McCarthy. I hope Mr. Cruz will be aware enough of the comparison not to cause citizens and country to suffer the kind of trouble caused by Mr. McCarthy.  Politicians sometimes have hidden agendas to promote themselves first before attending to their duty to represent the people who elected them.  This lack of love of country and its citizens will do a lot of harm not only in the present but in the future affecting the next generation and those beyond.

Selfish people who elect selfish politicians to represent them have only themselves to blame when things go wrong.  Let us learn from the government shutdown and become more civilized.  We can show the world that Americans at the present time are able to cultivate themselves to be better, influencing the world to be closer, more peaceful and harmonious.

After I wrote the above passages I went to Google learning more about McCarthyism.  I found an article “Ted Cruz-The Reincarnation Of Joe McCarthy” written by Rick Ungar, Forbes website, if you have time please read this article.  The link is as follows: https://www.forbes.com/sites/rickungar/2013/02/18/ted-cruz-the-reincarnation-of-joe-mccarthy/3/
