   PIA24390: Spring Sprouts on Mars

                                  Original Caption Released with Image:

The sun is rising in Mars’ Northern Hemisphere, and spring activity is starting as the seasonal polar cap begins to sublimate (going from ice directly to gas). A layer of dry ice covers the sand dunes in this image.

Gas jets sprout through the ice layer carrying dust and sand from the surface, showing up as dark fans. At this time in early Martian spring, the fans are visible between the sand dunes. The ground between the dunes is on the scale of tens of centimeters, and ice in places where the sun hits more directly will thin fastest, releasing the jets. Later, the ice over and around the dunes will rupture and more fans will appear on the dunes.

Several craters in Arabia Terra are filled with layered rock, often exposed in rounded mounds.

The bright layers are roughly the same thickness, giving a stair-step appearance.

PIA24382: Blast Waves and Dusty Landslides

              Original Caption Released with Image:

Meteorites hit Mars and create small craters like the one we’ve imaged here. Usually we spot these new craters in lower-resolution images from the Context Camera because the impact disturbs dust on the surface and creates a dark mark that’s much bigger than the crater.

This meteorite hit a dusty area and made a crater, but did something a little more special to the surrounding dust. We can see dozens of dark, dust-free, streaks on slopes surrounding the crater. These slope streaks form when dust slumps downhill and happen naturally on a regular basis.

In this case though, the impact and explosion that made the crater seems to have

set off many of these downhill slumps of dust simultaneously. This could have

happened from the explosion’s blast wave passing through the air or the shaking

of the ground that it caused.

The map is projected here at a scale of 25 centimeters (9.8 inches) per pixel.

An illustration of NASA’s Perseverance rover exploring inside Mars’ Jezero Crater.

The 28-mile-wide (45-kilometer-wide) crater is located on the western edge of

a flat plain called Isidis Planitia, which lies just north of the Martian equator.

NASA believes the ancient lake-delta system there is the best place for Perseverance, in its hunt for signs of past microscopic life, to find and collect promising rock and regolith (broken rock and dust) samples for a possible future return to Earth.  A key objective for Perseverance’s mission on Mars is astrobiology, including the search for signs of ancient microbial life. The rover will characterize the planet’s geology and past climate, pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet, and be the first mission to collect and cache Martian rock and regolith.

Subsequent missions, currently under consideration by NASA in cooperation with

ESA (European Space Agency), would send spacecraft to Mars to collect these cached

samples from the surface and return them to Earth for in-depth analysis.

This illustration depicts the some of the major milestones NASA’s Perseverance

rover will go through during its 7-minute descent to the Martian surface on

Feb. 18, 2021. Hundreds of critical events must execute perfectly and exactly

on time for the rover to land safely.

Entry, Descent, and Landing, or EDL, begins when the spacecraft reaches

the top of the Martian atmosphere, traveling nearly 12,500 mph (20,000 kph).

It ends about seven minutes later, with Perseverance stationary on the

Martian surface. Perseverance handles everything on its own during this

process. It takes more than 11 minutes to get a radio signal back from Mars,

so by the time the mission team hears that the spacecraft has entered

the atmosphere, in reality, the rover is already on the ground.

Biden Inherits the Mess of a Lying Madman

Jan 21, 2021  Jimmy Kimmel Live

It was our first full day of Trumplessness here in the USA and there were no crazy tweets from the POTUS accounts, Tom Hanks hosted a star-studded “Celebrating America” concert for the Inauguration, President Biden hit the ground running by signing many Executive Orders, Dr. Fauci returned with lots of information about the COVID-19 response, Trump plans his return to the political stage while Lindsey Graham continues to butter him up in Washington, the prophecies that the QAnon crowd has built their life around did not come to fruition, Trump’s final lie tally was 30,573, and we take a trip down memory lane with a 41 pun salute to the many nicknames we have given Donald Trump over the past four years, brought to life in a song by the great Rufus Wainwright. Inauguration Day: World leaders react to Biden becoming 46th US president

Jan 20, 2021  Global News

As Joe Biden took the oath of office and became the 46th president of the United States, world leaders gave various reactions to the incoming administration, some with hope and ambitious plans. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated Biden and said he hoped to confront shared challenges including “the threat posed by Iran.” British Prime Minister Boris Johnson started Wednesday’s question period in the U.K.’s House of Commons by congratulating Biden and saying he’s looking forward to working with him on common interests. Johnson was joined by both the speaker of the house and the labour party opposition leader in congratulating Biden. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said the election of Joe Biden was a “victory of democracy over the far-right” following the violent attack on the U.S. Capital by Trump supporters on Jan. 6. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani urged Biden’s administration to return to the 2015 nuclear agreement and lift sanctions on Tehran, while welcoming the end of President Donald Trump’s era of “oppression and corruption.” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen smiled as she congratulated Biden and Harris, saying “Europe has a friend in the White House,” during an EU Parliament address. French President Emanuel Macron, Canadian Prime minister Justin Trudeau and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi all tweeted congratulating Biden and Harris on Inauguration Day. The Associated Press: Biden halts border wall building after Trump’s final surge

SAN DIEGO (AP) — In the days before Joe Biden became president, construction crews worked quickly to finish Donald Trump’s wall at an iconic cross-border park overlooking the Pacific Ocean, which then-first lady Pat Nixon inaugurated in 1971 as a symbol of international friendship.

Biden on Wednesday ordered a “pause” on all wall construction within a week, one of 17 executive orders issued on his first day in office, including six dealing with immigration.

The order leaves billions of dollars of work unfinished — but still under contract — after Trump worked feverishly last year to build more than 450 miles (720 kilometers), a goal he said he achieved eight days before leaving office.

As of Jan. 15, the government spent $6.1 billion of the $10.8 billion in work it signed contracts to have done, according to a Senate Democratic aide with knowledge of the contracts who spoke on condition of anonymity because details have not been made public. The full amount under contract would have extended Trump’s wall to 664 miles (1,069 kilometers).

Biden, seeking to fulfill a pledge not to build “another foot,” gave his administration two months to determine how much it would cost to cancel contracts and whether money could be spent elsewhere. The Senate aide said fees would be negotiated with contractors and the administration would seek to spend whatever’s left on related uses on the border, such as roads, lights, sensors and other technology.

Publicly, the Trump administration said it secured $15 billion for the wall. The Senate aide said it was actually $16.45 billion as of Wednesday, $5.8 billion of which was appropriated by Congress and the rest diverted from the Defense and Treasury departments.

The Trump administration notified the Senate aide on Jan. 14 that it was moving ahead with a contract for $863 million, but it was not awarded.

The Army Corps of Engineers, which has awarded wall contracts with Defense Department money, said Thursday that it told crews not to install any additional barriers and to limit activity over the next few days to what is “necessary to safely prepare each site for a suspension of work.”

John Kurc, an activist who posts videos of dynamite blasts by wall construction crews, said he saw one dynamite charge being set Wednesday afternoon in Guadalupe Canyon in easternmost Arizona, even as the inauguration was playing out in Washington.

Heavy machines have been crawling over roadways gouged into rocky mountainsides, tapping open holes for posts on U.S. Bureau of Land Management property.

Advocates in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley, the busiest area for illegal crossings, and near Nogales, Arizona, saw idle construction equipment Thursday.

But in San Diego, crews were out replacing a steel fence with imposing, tightly spaced poles topped with flat steel plates rising 30 feet (9 meters), said Dan Watman of Friends of Friendship Park, a group that promotes public access to the cross-border park overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Contractors began last week, said Watman, who was informed of the project in a December conference call with Border Patrol agents but got no explanation for it. The agency referred questions to the White House, which had no immediate comment.

Trump said the border wall would be “virtually impenetrable” and paid for by Mexico, which never happened. While the wall is much more formidable than the barriers it replaced, it isn’t uncommon for smugglers to guide people over or through it. Portions can be sawed with power tools sold at home improvement stores.

Despite Trump’s bravado, Border Patrol officials have said the wall was never meant to stop everyone but rather to slow their advance.

Jose Edgar Zuleta, whose business selling religious jewelry in the Mexican city of Puebla dried up during the coronavirus pandemic, cleared two walls in Friendship Park in October with a special ladder. He moved through brush in a heavily patrolled area for about half an hour before getting caught. His 21-year-old son, who went ahead of him, got picked up hours later.

The cross-border park has hosted yoga classes, concerts and countless news conferences, including one in 2018 with then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions to announce a “zero tolerance” policy that caused thousands of children to be separated from their parents at the border.

An old bullfighting ring and ocean-view restaurants surround the Mexican side; wetland scrub stretches into the United States.

Years ago, people passed baked goods, kissed and shook hands through a chain-link fence. Watman remembers passing tools back and forth in 2007 to plant a cross-border garden that still stands.

Since 2012, after construction of a double wall at the park, the Border Patrol has opened a gate many weekends for up to 10 people at a time to exchange words with those in Mexico.

SLSCO Ltd. of Galveston, Texas, won contracts to build double walls blanketing 14 miles (22 kilometers) in San Diego. Company spokeswoman Liz Rogers said work at Friendship Park is separate and done by another company.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments next month on whether the government’ illegally diverted billions of dollars from the Defense Department to build the wall after Congress denied money that Trump sought, triggering a 35-day government shutdown in 2017.

It is unclear if Biden will adopt Trump’s position before the Supreme Court. The government’s brief is due Feb. 11.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador welcomed Biden’s decision to stop wall construction but, in defense of Trump, noted that U.S. presidents going back to 1990s built border barriers. He displayed a chart to prove his point

The New York Times      The Morning:  Biden’s first day

January 21, 2021

By David Leonhardt

Good morning. The Biden administration begins to address the six crises that the new president described in his inaugural address.

‘Cascading crises of our era’

Near the end of his inaugural address yesterday, President Biden named six crises that the U.S. faces: the virus, climate change, growing inequality, racism, America’s global standing and an attack on truth and democracy.

“Any one of these will be enough to challenge us in profound ways. But the fact is, we face them all at once,” Biden said. “We will be judged — you and I — by how we resolve these cascading crises of our era.”

To get started, Biden announced a longer list of Day 1 executive actions — 17, in all — than any previous modern president, as The Times’s Michael Shear points out. The Biden administration is also asking for legislation by Congress. But here’s our explanation of how the new president is trying to make immediate progress:

A field of flags represented the thousands of Americans who could not attend the inauguration.Jason Andrew for The New York Times

The virus

Biden signed an executive order yesterday requiring masks where he has the authority to do so — in federal buildings, for example — as well as a separate order creating a White House position to improve the government’s response to the virus.
He also made clear that he was ending the Trump administration’s hostility to global cooperation by halting the U.S. withdrawal from the World Health Organization. Biden is sending Dr. Anthony Fauci to the group’s meeting today as the head of the U.S. delegation. “It’s an interconnected world,” my colleague Apoorva Mandavilli says. To succeed in combating the virus, “we have to coordinate with other countries.”
Biden is also asking Americans to wear masks for the next 100 days. One question he hasn’t yet answered: How will he persuade more Republican voters — many of whom are skeptical of masks — to wear them?

Climate change
Biden signed two executive orders on climate — one that recommits the U.S. to the Paris climate agreement and another that reverses Donald Trump’s hostility to environmental regulations. “No president has brought in this many people at the start of an administration to work on climate change,” Lisa Friedman, who covers climate policy, said.
Still, these actions are only first steps, Nathaniel Keohane of the Environmental Defense Fund told me. Reversing Trump’s actions is significant, he added — but the world needs more ambitious steps to curb the use of greenhouse gases that are causing so much damage.

Inequality and racism
Biden’s biggest attempts to reduce economic and racial inequality will require congressional legislation. But he took some early steps yesterday.
He has extended moratoriums on evictions and student-loan payments that the Trump administration had put in place. He also ordered federal agencies to root out racially unequal policies. “We have great evidence from economists that tearing down barriers to advancement for men of color and women of all races fueled huge amounts of growth in the United States in decades past,” The Times’s Jim Tankersley said.
Biden also sought to undo several of Trump’s anti-immigration policies. Among the moves: refocusing deportation efforts on those undocumented immigrants who have committed crimes in the U.S. “Trump, on the other hand, decided that anyone in the country illegally should be arrested and deported,” Miriam Jordan, who covers immigration for The Times, said.

Democracy, truth and America’s role in the world

In his address, Biden repeatedly stressed the importance of truth and included a veiled but obvious reference to Trump by criticizing “lies told for power and for profit.” And at her first White House briefing last night, Jen Psaki, Biden’s press secretary, said: “There will be moments when we disagree … but we have a common goal, which is sharing accurate information with the American people.”
Biden signaled his emphasis on diplomacy by embracing the Paris climate accord and World Health Organization. Another big move to improve the U.S. image around the world was his immediate repeal of a signature Trump policy: the so-called Muslim travel ban. It had restricted nearly all passport holders from several Muslim-majority countries — including Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen — from entering the U.S.

MORE ON THE INAUGURATION

REVIEWS OF THE SPEECH
Most presidents’ inaugural addresses have included encomiums to unity. But “Biden’s words felt less like rhetorical flourishes and more like an urgent appeal to stabilize a country reeling” from multiple crises, Julie Pace of The Associated Press wrote.

·         The journalist Clare Malone: “‘Lies told for power and for profit’ is a good line and a description of a thing that’s not going away.”

·         Slate’s Jim Newell: Biden is not likely to erase the country’s political divisions. But he has laid out an agenda with “tangible, deliverable items to make lives better.”

·         Eric Levitz of New York Magazine: “He does not seek the unity of all Americans, only that of ‘enough of us’ to drag the rest toward justice.”

·         “It wasn’t a memorable speech, but its informal style was true to Biden,” National Review’s Rich Lowry wrote. “Obviously it’s much easier to talk unity than achieve it.”

·         Biden’s declaration that he would “defeat” white supremacy echoed Ulysses S. Grant, the president who crushed the Ku Klux Klan after the Civil War, The New Yorker’s Jelani Cobb noted.

THE POEM
  • Amanda Gorman, 22, was the youngest person to deliver an inaugural poem. You can watch her performance, or read the text.
  • Gorman said she had listened to the musical “Hamilton” for inspiration. “You were perfect,” Lin-Manuel Miranda, the show’s creator, wrote to her on Twitter. “Brava!”
  • Like Biden, Gorman has had a speech impediment, and it helped draw her to poetry. Before the inauguration, she practiced delivering her poem “The Hill We Climb” over and over, she told The Times.
INAUGURAL FASHIONS

  • Purple — a blend of red and blue — was the color of the day. (It’s also one of the signature colors of the suffragists.) Vice President Kamala Harris, Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton all wore variations of the color.
  • Biden and his wife, Jill Biden, as well as Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, wore American designers. Harris’s outfit was designed by Christopher John Rogers, the latest Black designer whose clothes she has spotlighted.

  • Senator Bernie Sanders and his mittens became a meme. They are Vermont-made, and he wore them on the campaign trail, Ruby Cramer of BuzzFeed News wrote.
  • Lady Gaga, who wore a large brooch of a dove carrying an olive branch as she sang the national anthem, evokedthe dystopian book series “The Hunger Games.” Its heroine, Katniss Everdeen, sports a pin of a fictional bird.
  • Sneakerheads admired the rare pair of Dior Air Jordan 1sthat Nikolas Ajagu, husband of Meena Harris and nephew-in-law of Kamala Harris, wore to the ceremony.
THE ADMINISTRATION’S FIRST DAY

  • The Senate confirmed Avril Haines to be the director of national intelligence. She was Biden’s first cabinet nominee to receive a vote.
  • The Washington Post got a peek at how Biden has redecorated the Oval Office, from bringing back Bill Clinton’s drapes to installing a big portrait of Franklin Roosevelt, a president who steered the nation through multiple crises.
  • Jon Bon Jovi, John Legend and Katy Perry — singing “Firework” to actual fireworks over the Mall — were among those who performed at a celebration to mark the day.
  • “The performances stuck to a theme: hope in a dark time,” The Times’s critic writes

OTHER NEWS

  • The World Health Organization reported that 93,000 people died of the coronavirus across the globe last week, a record. (Here’s how to protect yourself.)
  • Because of a shipping delay, New York City postponed 23,000 vaccination appointments that were scheduled for this week.
  • Members of the Proud Boys, a far-right group loyal to Trump, are calling him “weak,” as more of them face charges over storming the Capitol.
  • Antifascist and racial-justice protesters in Portland, Ore., and in Seattle smashed windows, marched through the streets and burned an American flag, saying that the Biden administration “won’t save us.”
  • Several species of salmon in the Pacific Northwest are “on the brink of extinction,” partly as a result of climate change.
  • A U.S. woman living in Bali praised the Indonesian island as “queer friendly.” In response, the authorities deported her for “spreading information that could unsettle the public.”

Ing’s Peace Project

Happy Birthday Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Monday, January 19, 2015

I produced Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “I Have A Dream” artwork in 2010.

Thanks to Linda Leonard-Nevels , School Library Media Specialist of Malcolm X Shabazz High School, Newark, New Jersey.  She came to our store.  After her shopping I took advantage to explain to her about my Peace Project.  Linda came back on Friday, October 1. 2014 and took six of my Peace Project posters to distribute to the teachers in her school for their students to write comments on my peace posters.  She returned three of my Peace posters with student comments on Friday, December 12, 2014.

Working on artwork for Malcolm X Shabazz High School’s Students comments on “What does Peace mean to you?” I realized that this month on Monday, January 19 is Dr. Martin Luther King’s Day.  I recalled that Dr. King received a Nobel Peace Prize on 1964.  I am sure these students know this.  I did research on Dr. King’s acceptance speech.  I was impressed with his speech.  Lately there is increasing conflict between the black youth and police.  So I decided to do some artwork on Dr. King’s Nobel Prize Acceptance speech in the same project of the Malcolm X Shabazz High School’s Students Peace comments.

I hope that young people today realize that it takes time for human progress and it takes all generations to be aware of human rights and put effort into improving the transition for all humanity to reach equality and harmony in our world.

Martin Luther King Jr. Nobel Peace Prize Acceptance Speech

Jan 15, 2014  Nobel Prize

Read the acceptance speech at nobelprize.org: https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/pea… Martin Luther King Jr. held his acceptance speech in the auditorium of the University of Oslo on 10 December 1964. Copyright © Norsk Rikskringkasting AS 2012

                                                      Dr.Martin Luther King’s

Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech

December 10, 1964
Oslo, Norway

I accept the Nobel Prize for Peace at a moment when twenty-two million Negroes of the United States of America are engaged in a creative battle to end the long night of racial injustice. I accept this award in behalf of a civil rights movement which is moving with determination and a majestic scorn for risk and danger to establish a reign of freedom and a rule of justice.

I am mindful that only yesterday in Birmingham, Alabama, our children, crying out for brotherhood, were answered with fire hoses, snarling dogs and even death. I am mindful that only yesterday in Philadelphia, Mississippi, young people seeing to secure the right to vote were brutalized and murdered. And only yesterday more than 40 houses of worship in the State of Mississippi alone were bombed or burned because they offered a sunctuary to those who would not accept segregation.

I am mindful that debilitating and grinding poverty afflicts my people and chains them to the lowest rung of the economic ladder.

Therefore, I must ask why this prize is awarded to a movement which is beleaguered and committed to unrelenting struggle; to a movement which has not won the very peace and brotherhood which is the essence of the Nobel Prize.

After contemplation, I conclude that this award which I receive on behalf of that movement is profound recognition that nonviolence is the answer to the crucial political and moral question of our time — the need for man to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to violence and oppression.

Civilization and violence are antithetical concepts. Negroes of the United States, following the people of India, have demonstrated that nonviolence is not sterile passivity, but a powerful moral force which makes for social transformation. Sooner or later all the people of the world will have to discover a way to live together in peace, and thereby transform this pending cosmic elegy into a creative psalm of brotherhood.

If this is to be achieved, man must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love. The tortuous road which has led from Montgomery, Alabama, to Oslo bears witness to this truth. This is a road over which millions of Negroes are travelling to find a new sense of dignity.

This same road has opened for all Americans a new ear of progress and hope. It has led to a new Civil Rights bill, and it will, I am convinced, be widened and lengthened into a superhighway of justice as Negro and white men in increasing numbers create alliances to overcome their common problems.

I accept this award today with an abiding faith in America and an audacious faith in the future of mankind. I refuse to accept despair as the final response to the ambiguities of history. I refuse to accept the idea that the “isness” of man’s present nature makes him morally incapable of reaching up for the eternal “oughtness” that forever confronts him.

I refuse to accept the idea that man is mere flotsom and jetsom in the river of life unable to influence the unfolding events which surround him. I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality.

I refuse to accept the cynical notion that nation after nation must spiral down a militaristic stairway into the hell of thermonuclear destruction. I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right temporarily defeated is stronger than evil triumphant.

I believe that even amid today’s motor bursts and whining bullets, there is still hope for a brighter tomorrow. I believe that wounded justice, lying prostrate on the blood-flowing streets of our nations, can be lifted from this dust of shame to reign supreme among the children of men.

I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality and freedom for their spirits. I believe that what self-centered men have torn down, men other-centered can build up. I still believe that one day mankind will bow before the altars of God and be crowned triumphant over war and bloodshed, and nonviolent redemptive goodwill will proclaim the rule of the land.

“And the lion and the lamb shall lie down together and every man shall sit under his own vine and fig tree and none shall be afraid.”

I still believe that we shall overcome.

This faith can give us courage to face the uncertainties of the future. It will give our tired feet new strength as we continue our forward stride toward the city of freedom. When our days become dreary with low-hovering clouds and our nights become darker than a thousand midnights, we will know that we are living in the creative turmoil of a genuine civilization struggling to be born.

Today I come to Oslo as a trustee, inspired and with renewed dedication to humanity. I accept this prize on behalf of all men who love peace and brotherhood. I say I come as a trustee, for in the depths of my heart I am aware that this prize is much more than an honor to me personally.

Every time I take a flight I am always mindful of the man people who make a successful journey possible — the known pilots and the unknown ground crew.

So you honor the dedicated pilots of our struggle who have sat at the controls as the freedom movement soared into orbit. You honor, once again, Chief (Albert) Luthuli of South Africa, whose struggles with and for his people, are still met with the most brutal expression of man’s inhumanity to man.

You honor the ground crew without whose labor and sacrifices the jet flights to freedom could never have left the earth.

Most of these people will never make the headlines and their names will not appear in Who’s Who. Yet when years have rolled past and when the blazing light of truth is focused on this marvelous age in which we live — men and women will know and children will be taught that we have a finer land, a better people, a more noble civilization — because these humble children of God were willing to suffer for righteousness’ sake.

I think Alfred Nobel would know what I mean when I say that I accept this award in the spirit of a curator of some precious heirloom which he holds in trust for its true ownersall those to whom beauty is truth and truth beauty — and in whose eyes the beauty of genuine brotherhood and peace is more precious than diamonds or silver or gold.

MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

Why Arrest Warrants Should Issue for Trump, Don Jr., Rudy & Others for the Jan. 6 US Capitol Riot

Jan 11, 2021  Glenn Kirschner

Donald Trump and others encouraged, instigated and incited the riot at the US Capitol on January 6. Worse yet, Trump made sure there were no executive branch law enforcement resources deployed to protect those in the Capitol building (given that the US Capitol Police are an agency controlled by Congress, not the executive branch). Trump, Don Jr., Rudy Giuliani and others incited the crowd to march on and, in a very real sense, attack, the US Capitol, putting EVERYONE in the building – janitorial staff, administrative staff, members of Congress and even Vice President Pence – at imminent risk of serious injury or worse. There generally are three ways to initiate a criminal case: a probable cause arrest, an arrest warrant and/or a grand jury indictment. Here’s an explanation of the difference among the three and why an arrest warrant is the best approach at this moment in time for Trump and the others. Leaders around the world watched in disbelief as the chaos unfolded in Washington, where supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the US Capitol. Many have condemned the violence and called for democracy to be respected. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron gave their reactions, and DW spoke to people on the street in Germany. Around the world, there was disbelief at the scenes that unfolded in the Capitol: -Germany’s Bild newspaper talked of a “coup attempt” – and a “moment of great shame” -In Britain, the Daily Telegraph minced no words: “Democracy under siege” -The picture of Trump supporters storming the Capitol dominated the United Arab Emirates’ Gulf News daily. -The Nigerian Tribune offered this blistering verdict: “Trump supporters defile democracy.” -China compared the storming of the Capitol with pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong. Could Trump be removed for inciting supporters to storm the Capitol? | DW News

Jan 7, 2021  DW News

Unprecedented – and deadly – scenes at the Capitol in Washington DC – where supporters of President Trump stormed the building in a bid to overturn the election results. One woman was shot and later died of her injuries, as rioters attempted to stop Congress members from certifying Joe Biden’s election victory. Chaos unraveled on Capitol Hill as the building was stormed by hundreds of Trump supporters. A battle ensued between riot police and the protesters as they broke past security. They stormed the Senate chambers to prevent Congress from certifying Joe Biden’s election victory – literally bringing democracy to a halt. Police then drew their guns. A woman was shot by police officers – and was later proclaimed dead. Some protesters also turned their anger against the media. Earlier at a rally near the White House, President Trump had repeated his unsubstantiated claims that the election had been stolen from him – and urged his supporters to rally at the Capitol. Hours later Trump then released a recorded message telling his supporters to go home but failed to condemn their actions. Trump has now been suspended from several social media accounts, including Twitter, after tweeting to supporters who attacked the Capitol. When lawmakers finally got back into the Senate chambers, several senior republicans condemned then violence. Including Trump’s vice president Mike Pence. The violence was branded as a siege by President-elect Joe Biden, who warned of the threat to democracy. The crowds dissipated once the 6pm curfew came into force, but National Guard troops remained alert for potential violence throughout the night. The New York Times        The Morning                    January 7, 2021

By David Leonhardt
Good morning. A pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol. Members of Congress — after fleeing for their safety — voted to confirm Biden’s victory.

They listened to the president

Donald Trump has been attacking American democracy for much of his time as president.

He has told repeated lies about voter fraud, undermining people’s confidence in elections. He has defied parts of the Constitution. He has spent his final weeks in office pressuring other government officials to overturn the result of an election he lost. He has occasionally encouraged his supporters to commit violence.
Yesterday, hundreds of those supporters decided to take Trump literally.
They fought their way through armed police, smashed windows and stormed the U.S. Capitol to prevent Congress from certifying President-elect Joe Biden’s victory. They then spent several hours inside the building, vandalizing offices and the House floor. They injured at least 14 law enforcement officers. Vice President Mike Pence, members of Congress and others fled for their safety.
In the end, the rioters — and Trump — will fail in their effort to keep him in power. At about 3:45 a.m., Congress did confirm Biden’s victory. Thirteen days from now, he will take the oath of office and become president of the United States.
But a physical assault on the nation’s seat of government is no small thing. And it was not a onetime event. It was a logical extension of the message that Trump has long been telling his supporters — that American democracy is a fraud, that his opponents are traitors and that his allies need to fight back.
“We’re seeing more and more citizens expressing openness to violence,” Lee Drutman, a political scientist, told me almost three months ago, “as more and more partisan leaders engage in the kinds of dehumanizing rhetoric that paves the way for taking violent action.”
Trump, speaking to the protesters at a rally hours before they burst into the Capitol, referred to his political opponents as “bad people” and “the enemy of the people.” He described his allies as “warriors” and encouraged them to stop “fighting like a boxer with his hands tied behind his back.” He added, “We’re going to have to fight much harder.”
At the same rally, Rudy Giuliani said that Trump’s opponents should go to jail and added, “Let’s have trial by combat.” And Donald Trump Jr., addressing congressional Republicans who planned to split from his father, said: “We’re coming for you, and we’re going to have a good time doing it.”
After the violence, Trump himself wrote on social media, “These are the things and events that happen when a sacred landslide election victory is so unceremoniously and viciously stripped away from great patriots who have been badly & unfairly treated for so long.”
Trump’s efforts are failing in large part because a significant number of Republicans have refused to go along with him. But many other high-level Republicans have echoed and encouraged him. Josh Hawley, Ted Cruz and dozens of other members of Congress have fanned voters’ anger by promoting Trump’s lies about the election. (Here’s a list of Congress members who did so yesterday.) They have joined his attempts to undermine the American system of government.
“This is what you’ve gotten, guys,” Senator Mitt Romney, the Utah Republican, yelled as the rioters breached the Capitol yesterday. He was addressing his colleagues who have supported Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the election.
Shortly afterward, uniformed police officers evacuated senators and reporters from the chamber to the basement, before rushing them through underground tunnels to a secure location in a Senate office building. There, Romney saw Jonathan Martin, a Times reporter, and called for Jonathan to come over and talk. In 15 years of covering him, Jonathan said he had never seen Romney so alarmed.
“This is what the president has caused today, this insurrection,” Romney, with fury in his voice, said.

  • “Not everyone storming the Capitol is QAnon, but make no mistake: this wouldn’t have happened without QAnon, the politicians and partisan media figures who cynically embraced it, and the platforms that amplified it for years,” Kevin Roose, a Times tech columnist, wrote.
  • “This is not dissent,” Biden said in a speech as the chaos was unfolding. “It’s disorder. It’s chaos. It borders on sedition and it must end now.”
  • “Storming the capitol was an act of political violence meant to express ownership of the country, regardless of the outcome of any election,” Adam Serwer, a writer at The Atlantic, tweeted. “Its surrender by the capitol police was an affirmation that will encourage further violence.”

What we know about the 5 deaths in the pro-Trump mob that stormed the Capitol

By Eric LevensonAmir Vera and Mallika Kallingal, CNN

Updated 5:29 PM ET, Fri January 8, 2021

(CNN)A US Capitol police officer is the latest to be confirmed dead after a mob of President Trump’s supporters stormed the US Capitol on Wednesday.

Four other people died during the stunning attack at the heart of American democracy as mob members vandalized the building and assaulted police officers. One woman was fatally shot by police and three people died of apparent medical emergencies.

Several DC Metropolitan Police officers were also injured during the insurrection, police Chief Robert Contee said. One officer had significant facial injuries from being struck by a projectile, and another officer was hospitalized after being pepper-sprayed.

Here’s what we know about the people who died:

Officer dies after being injured

Capitol Police released a statement saying Officer Brian D. Sicknick passed away Thursday night “due to injuries sustained while on-duty.”

Officer Sicknick was injured while physically engaging with the rioters and collapsed after returning to his division office. “He was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries,” the Capitol Police statement said.

Officer Sicknick joined the USCP in July 2008, and most recently served in the Department’s First Responder’s Unit.

“The entire USCP Department expresses its deepest sympathies to Officer Sicknick’s family and friends on their loss, and mourns the loss of a friend and colleague,” Capitol Police added.

His death is now being investigated.

United States Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick

Sicknick was originally from South River, New Jersey, and the youngest of three sons, according to a statement issued by his brother on behalf of his family.

Sicknick “wanted to be a police officer his entire life,” his brother Ken said, and joined the New Jersey National Guard in his pursuit of that goal.

According to a statement from New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy’s office, Sicknick was a staff sergeant for the New Jersey National Guard. He served as a fire team member and a leader of the 108th Security Force Squadron, 108th Wing, at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, Murphy’s statement said.

Sicknick’s service included two deployments — one as part of Operation Southern Watch and another as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, Murphy said.

Sicknick’s family was “very proud” of his service to his country, Ken Sicknick said.

“Brian is a hero, and that is what we would like people to remember,” he said.

Air Force veteran fatally shot by police

A woman was fatally shot by a US Capitol Police employee as the mob tried to force its way toward the House Chamber where members of Congress were sheltering, US Capitol Police said in a statement.

The woman was given medical assistance immediately and taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Authorities identified her as Ashli Babbitt, a 35-year-old from Huntington, Maryland.

Babbit’s mother, Michelle Witthoeft told CNN on Thursday she was devastated to learn of her daughter’s death.

“I loved and admired her greatly,” Witthoeft said of Babbitt. “She served this country boldly and proudly.”

Babbitt was an ardent Trump supporter who held strong political views, her mother said, and was “passionate enough to die for what she believed in.”

Babbitt, who was previously married but separated from her husband in 2019, frequently attended pro-Trump rallies. She flew to Washington, DC, from San Diego, California, with the intent to participate in the protest this week, her mother said.

“Her political views were strong and adamant, and she voiced them whenever she could,” Witthoeft said.

A CNN review of Babbitt’s social media accounts determined Babbitt frequently voiced support for President Trump and other conservative figures on Facebook. She also shared content promoting political conspiracy theories often pushed by far-right figures.

Babbitt served as a senior airman in the US Air Force from 2004 to 2008 under the name Ashli Elizabeth McEntee, according to military records. She was a member of the Air Force Reserve from 2008 to 2010 and was in the Air National Guard from 2010 until November 2016, records show.

“She served in the United States Air Force and was deployed four times and came back safely, only to have her own country shoot her down,” Witthoeft said tearfully by phone.

The US Capitol Police employee who shot Babbitt has been placed on administrative leave and their police powers have been suspended pending a joint Metro Police and USCP investigation, USCP said.

US Capitol secured, 4 dead after rioters stormed the halls of Congress to block Biden’s win

“This is a tragic incident, and I send my condolences to the victim’s family and friends,” Metro Police Chief Contee said.

Two people who saw the shooting, left-wing activist John Sullivan and documentary filmmaker Jade Sacker, provided CNN with video of the incident and described the moments beforehand.

Sullivan said rioters were using flag poles and other items to smash glass windows inside the Capitol. The woman then tried to make her way through the window when several people with guns came out through the doorways.

“The second that she climbed through the window she got shot right in the neck area, fell backwards,” Sullivan said in an interview that broadcast on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360.”

“I just remember the sense of shock and sorrow that somebody just died and did not need to die.”

The woman was trying to enter an area that did not yet appear to have been breached by rioters, Sullivan said.

“It was an area that was completely blocked off,” he said. “They had chairs up against the doorway, tables, so people couldn’t get in.”

Three others dead

Three other people who had come from out of state died of “medical emergencies” during the riot, police said.

“One adult female and two adult males appear to have suffered from separate medical emergencies, which resulted in their deaths,” Contee said. “Any loss of life in the District is tragic and our thoughts are with anyone impacted by their loss.”

They were identified as Benjamin Philips, 50, of Ringtown, Pennsylvania; Kevin Greeson, 55, of Athens, Alabama; and Rosanne Boyland, 34, of Kennesaw, Georgia. The three were on the grounds of the Capitol when they experienced their medical emergencies, Contee said.

Kevin Greeson

Greeson had a history of high blood pressure and suffered a heart attack amid the excitement, his family said in a statement to CNN. He was an advocate of Trump and attended the event to show his support.

“He was excited to be there to experience this event,” the statement said. “He was not there to participate in violence or rioting, nor did he condone such actions.”

The family says they are devastated by the loss.

“Kevin was a wonderful father and husband who loved life,” the family statement said. “He loved to ride motorcycles, he loved his job and his coworkers, and he loved his dogs.”

Boyland’s family is also mourning her death, her brother-in-law, Justin Cave, told CNN affiliate WGCL. The family is still working to learn more details about the specifics of her death, he said.

As the family watched Wednesday’s events, they hoped that Boyland wasn’t among the crowd, Cave said. “Tragically she was there and it cost her life,” he said.

“She was a wonderful sister, daughter, and aunt. Anyone who knew her knows how compassionate she was, she always put others before herself,” Cave said.

DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services transported people to area hospitals with injuries ranging from cardiac arrest to multiple fractures after falling from scaffolding on the West front of the Capitol building.

However, city officials did not say whether any of these people are the ones who died.

Biden: Trump skipping my inauguration a good thing

Jan 8, 2021  CNN

President-elect Joe Biden said President Donald Trump’s decision to skip his inauguration is “one of the few things he and I have ever agreed on.” “It’s a good thing, him not showing up,” Biden told reporters Friday in Wilmington, Delaware, at a news conference after he introduced Cabinet nominees. “He exceeded even my worst notions about him. He’s been an embarrassment to the country, embarrassed us around the world. He’s not worthy to hold that office,” Biden said. However, Biden said he is glad Vice President Mike Pence will attend his inauguration. “He’s welcome. I think it’s important that as much as we can stick to what have been the historical precedents of how an administration changes should be maintained. And so Mike, the vice president, is welcome to come. We’d be honored to have him there, and to move forward in the transition,” Biden said. House Democrats are preparing articles of impeachment, expected to be introduced as soon as Monday. The President-elect did not weigh in on whether Congress should impeach Trump and remove him from office over his actions leading up to his supporters’ riot at the Capitol this week. He said he and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris are focused on preparing their agenda to combat the coronavirus pandemic and bolster a battered economy. #Biden #CNN #News

Jan 8, 2021  CNN

The man photographed sitting at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s desk during Wednesday’s riots in the US Capitol has been arrested and charged with three federal counts, including theft of public property, federal officials said. Federal officials said Richard Barnett of Arkansas was taken into custody Barnett was charged with knowingly entering and remaining in restricted building grounds without authority, violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds as well as the theft of public property, officials said. A resident of Alabama was also charged in connection with the pipe bomb found on the south side of the Capitol building.
