Bored Panda: French Street Artist Paints 3D Creature Graffiti and It’s Not For The Faint Of Heart (30 New Pics) Interview With Artist

The streets of cities can be quite boring and dull. That’s why it’s fun to see them being brought to life by amazing and creative street artists. Not all people love graffiti, but it’s difficult to not like these unique and magnificent creations by Pierrot (Scaf).

The artist creates amazing 3D graffiti illusions and they look like they’re about to jump off the wall. If someone didn’t expect to see a dinosaur or a lion around the corner, they would be in for the scare of their life. Pierrot often takes before and after pictures of the places he transforms and it’s amazing to see the transition from a simple wall to a work of art.

Pierrot started his own company where he paints his artwork for people. On his website, Pierrot writes: “Passionate about drawing, I founded my decoration company GrafoDeco. Addressing both individuals and professionals (public or private companies), event organizers, associations, or all those who are anxious to bring a touch of originality to their interior or exterior decorations. I paint all supports (walls, panels, canvases …) and of all sizes.”

Pierrot didn’t study in any art schools or anything similar. He started like most street artists—on the streets. He learned everything he knows on his own or from other artists. In a previous interview, Pierrot mentioned that he was inspired by a school friend to start creating art.

scaf_oner Report

Pierrot doesn’t just do street art, he creates interactive optical illusions and they are very difficult to do. The level at which you have to understand perspective, light, and many other things is insane and requires a lot of experience. This shows perfectly that street art is not always just vandalism, it’s also an amazing and very technical art form.

scaf_oner Report

scaf_oner Report

Pierrot tops off his amazing graffiti by coming up with fun ways to photograph it. He makes his art interactive so that people can take fun and unique photos with all kinds of creatures, characters, and even animals that don’t exist anymore. Pierrot himself dresses and poses with his work, which often is one of the reasons his work goes viral.

We got an interview from Pierrot and asked what the goal of his street art is: “My primary goal is to make people laugh. For people to have fun and escape by looking at my paintings. I have been drawing since I was little, my cousin drew a lot, and I started vandal graffiti in 2001 with a school friend.”

scaf_oner Report

scaf_oner Report

“The hardest part is not repeating myself over time. I always try to create something new. Sometimes animals come back in my paintings, but I’m usually trying to find something that best suits the wall. I need to paint without always doing the same; it’s quite difficult over time.”

scaf_oner Report

scaf_oner Report

We asked Pierrot what topics he chooses for his graffiti: “I don’t have a particular subject or theme in mind. I don’t convey a specific message through my art. I just try to keep it childish and fun.”

scaf_oner Report

scaf_oner Report

“My style is mostly 3D and quite cartoon-like. It depends on the moment. However, the main goal is to make people smile. So that the people who discover my paintings will have a moment of lightness in a world where everything goes so fast and crazy. I watch a lot of cartoons. My goal is also to get away from the problems of everyday life and dream.”

scaf_oner Report

scaf_oner Report

Pierrot tells us how he chooses what to draw: “It also depends on the moment. I watch a movie or a cartoon and an idea comes to me. I also come up with ideas by looking at the wall I’m about to work on. The idea comes to me because the general shape of the wall is different (angles or wall superposition). I try to change the main subject of my art often. I don’t want to get stuck doing the same thing over and over again.”

scaf_oner Report

scaf_oner Report

“I started doing 3D designs 5 or 6 years ago, but I’ve been painting for 20 years. I still hope to paint even being old with a long white beard, young people will call me ‘the old fool of the village.'”

scaf_oner Report

scaf_oner Report

Pierrot shares what inspires him to keep on creating: “My friends and traveling motivate me to always be more detailed and complicated. I challenge myself constantly. I am never very happy with the final result of my paintings, so I always try to do better every time, when possible.”

scaf_oner Report

scaf_oner Report

We asked the artist if people ever get upset at his graffiti: “No, people mostly like it, or just don’t care. I live in a village in the northeast of France. People do not look too much at graffiti and are not always fond of art.”

Here is some advice from the artist for people who want to create art: “Always practice, don’t watch social networks and media, especially at the beginning. Paint, paint, and paint again. Especially for fun, not for the money or to be known. It’s a passion before it becomes a profession.”

scaf_oner Report

scaf_oner Report

Pierrot tells us more about himself: “I paint almost every day. I live very simply. My pleasure above all is to paint, find abandoned places and later find ideas for paintings for them. I do a lot of sports, like breakdance. However, I do less and less because I am getting older, it starts hurting everywhere over time.”

scaf_oner Report

scaf_oner Report

Pierrot has a message for our readers: “Keep your youthful soul alive, don’t be too serious and rigid in life. Remember when you were 10 years old and the world seemed like magic. This is my life philosophy and above all, be curious about everything.”

As lockdowns loosen, people start venturing out into the streets. We can once again appreciate fresh air, open spaces, and hopefully, some good graffiti on a wall rather than bad ones. I know for sure that there’s at least one person that tips the balance of good-and-bad graffiti to the better side. He goes by the street name of scaf, or scaf_oner, on Instagram. What’s more, he isn’t a mere vandal: “I love to paint in all of these abandoned places. Above all, I like abandoned houses, manors, castles and factories.” By doing so, he transforms them and adds extra value to them, rather than the opposite.

The French street artist’s trademark is his extremely detailed and realistic style. He portrays all sorts of animals like dinosaurs and snakes, skulls and bones, robots, and other cool stuff. By the time scaf is done, his work looks picture-perfect, as if he glued a print of a photo. Everything is there: details, shadows, highlights, gloss, and flair.

It makes one wonder where he acquired sick skills like that. One would assume that he went to art school, or something similar. It turns out his background is “the school of street,” as he jokingly said in his exclusive interview for Bored Panda. “I did not study art. I started 18 years ago in abandoned factories and the street. It was a school friend who transmitted this passion to me,” he told us.

#2scaf_oner Report

#3scaf_oner Report

But wait, there’s more depth to it than that. Literally. His other signature skill is his ability to draw from a perspective to create an in-depth optical illusion where the object seemingly pops out of the wall. I, for one, would die of a heart attack if I saw a dinosaur of his in an abandoned building. His 3D drawings are so lifelike, it makes one forget that dinosaurs went extinct millions of years ago.

#4scaf_oner Report

#5scaf_oner Report

The artist even kicks it up an extra notch by striking often-hilarious poses that complement and play along with his drawings, making it real Instalicious eye-candy. It enhances the whole experience even more: it’s one thing to take a picture of your work, and another to have fun while doing it. He even dresses up accordingly for them.

#6scaf_oner Report

#7scaf_oner Report

Apart from his insane skills, this too must be the reason why his 120k followers on Instagram aren’t just an optical illusion. If you like them, check out his other works on his social media pages above. And if you go for a walk along the streets, make sure you appreciate all of the good works of art that are out there for everyone to see for free.

#8scaf_oner Report

#9scaf_oner Report

The artist has also opened up about what his quarantine experience was like: “Quarantine hasn’t changed my daily life much when I’m in my little town in france. Apart from the many staggered trips, I continued to paint alone in my abandoned factories. And if not I worked some painting on canvas, and I drew a lot. I am in my artistic bubble every day.”

Bored Panda: Children From Around The World Showcase Their Favorite Toys In This Heartwarming Series (22 Pics)

  Rokas Laurinavi?ius and Denis Tymulis

They say a picture is worth a thousand words but what about tens of pictures? From over 50 countries? Well, that’s a book, and it’s called Toy Stories: Photos of Children from Around the World and Their Favorite Things.

For about two years, Italian photographer Gabriele Galimberti had been visiting boys and girls around the globe to capture their portraits with their most prized possession — toys. From Texas to India, Malawi to China, Iceland, Morocco, and Fiji, Galimberti recorded the spontaneous and natural joy that unites kids despite their diverse backgrounds. Whether the child owns a veritable fleet of miniature cars or just a single stuffed monkey, the pride that they have is moving, funny, and thought-provoking.

Gabriele Galimberti

“I started this project almost by chance!” Galimberti told Bored Panda. “The first photo that I took for this series was in Tuscany, it’s the one with the girl and the cows in the background. She’s the daughter of one of my best friends. He asked me to photograph her, so I went to their house and she was playing with the cows. I thought that situation was really nice and so I decided to take a photo of that moment. I asked her to pose together with her toys and with the cows in the background. Then I really loved the result and some months later, when I had the possibility to start my trip around the world, I decided to take the same kind of photo in every country that I was going to visit.”

 #2 Rivaldo Fesna, 5, Port-Au-Prince, Haiti

Gabriele GalimbertiReport

Galimberti traveled the world in 2012-2013. At that time, he was working for one of the biggest Italian magazines, D La Repubblica. He was doing a story for the magazine about CouchSurfing and visited 58 countries using the Internet platform. Every week, he had a page on the magazine to report his trip and was publishing a portrait of the couchsurfer that was hosting him at the time.

“All the children that I have photographed are somehow connected to the couchsurfers that have hosted me. They are their children, their nephews, or simply their neighbors.”

#3 Tangawizi, 3, Keekorok, Kenya

Gabriele Galimberti

The kids look comfortable and relaxed in the photos and that’s probably because Galimberti took the time to earn their trust first. Mostly by playing with them. “I was really surprised to see how easy it was for children to understand my project!” He would spend anywhere from a couple of hours to a whole day getting to know the children before taking out his camera.

You can see a lot of differences in the photos but the thing that all of them have in common, according to Galimberti, is that they just love to play.

Texas Federal Court Judge Throws Out GOP Challenge to Drive-Thru Voting. The Judiciary is Holding

Nov 2, 2020  Glenn Kirschner

A federal Court judge in Texas (appointed by George W. Bush) rejected attempts by Republicans to throw out 127,000 votes because they were cast at a drive-trhu voting location. So now, both the Texas State Supreme Court AND a federal court in Texas have ruled the votes must be counted. The state of the judiciary remains strong. With Trump about to lose in a landslide, the courts will not save him. Bored Panda: Feast Your Eyes On The 30 Incredible Winning Shots For The 2020 UK Landscape Photographer Of The Year Contest

Lukas Garnelis and Julija Svidrait?

Most of us would probably agree that living through these difficult times, it’s quite easy to forget how spectacular and mesmerizing the world we live in truly is. Luckily, we’ve got a lot of talented artists and annual photography contests, such as the Landscape Photographer of the Year competition, that do a very good job of reminding us of all these things.

For the 13th time, this year’s Landscape Photographer of the Year competition invited both professional and amateur photographers to celebrate the mesmerizing landscape of the United Kingdom. The contest has four categories as well as the youth competition for photographers aged 18 or under. The winner of the whole contest gets awarded the prestigious title “Landscape Photographer of the Year 2020” and £10,000. In addition, there are also prizes of £1000 and £500 for the images judged the best and second-best in each of four categories. The best photographer in the youth competition becomes the “Young Landscape Photographer of the Year 2020” and wins £1,000.

With that being said, Bored Panda invites you to look through some of the most spectacular shots from the Landscape Photographer of the Year competition 2020.

Trump and his allies have argued for weeks that votes tallied after election night shouldn’t count. ‘The Election should end on November 3rd, not weeks later!’ Trump tweeted. GOP officials say they may legally challenge votes not counted on Election Day. But no laws back up Trump’s claims. Here are the facts: 1) Ballots are legally counted after Election Day in all 50 states 2) No state reports final results or certifies the winner on Election Day 3) In 29 states, military ballots can be received after Election Day, and in 18 states, ballots that arrive after Election Day are counted, per state law 4) Absentee & mail ballots take longer to count, with several processes done by hand; that doesn’t mean late results are flawed or fraudulent 5) People voting by mail are disproportionately Democrats, so neither in-person ballots nor mail ballots reflect the full vote count » Subscribe to NowThis: http://go.nowth.is/News_Subscribe » Sign up for our newsletter KnowThis to get the biggest stories of the day delivered straight to your inbox: https://go.nowth.is/KnowThis #Election #Politics #Trump #Biden #News #NowThis #NowThisNews

Why Europe is praying for Trump to lose the US election | DW Analysis

Oct 30, 2020  DW News

Almost four years of Donald Trump have left America’s European allies in a state of shock. He’s walked out of important treaties. He’s lashed out against America’s friends. He has cozied up to authoritarians. He’s abandoned the most important international treaties of our time. And he has even threatened NATO — the bedrock of America’s global power. It’s diplomatic disruption on an unprecedented scale. But even for America’s shell-shocked allies, it may not be all bad. So just how much has Trump disrupted transatlantic relations? DW’s Chief International Editor Richard Walker explains why Europe is praying for a Joe Biden win in the 2020 US election. “Americans are looking for hope,” the Trump campaign advisor Mica Mosbacher tells Conflict Zone in the final days before election day. But with over 200,000 people dead and more than eight million confirmed coronavirus cases in the US, will hopeful voters trust an incumbent president who has played down the threat and been accused of botching the country’s response to the pandemic? Consider the following scenario: a highly infectious, sometimes deadly respiratory virus infects humans for the first time. It spreads rapidly worldwide, and the WHO declares a pandemic. The death toll starts to rise and everyone is asking the same question: when will the pandemic end? Alex Rosenthal details the three main strategies governments can use to contain and end a pandemic. [Directed by Visorama, narrated by Jack Cutmore-Scott, music by Bamm Bamm Wolfgang].

Viruses mutate and spread from person to person, a dynamic process that often leaves us playing catch-up when there’s a new disease outbreak. What if vaccines worked the same way? Virologist Leor Weinberger shares a scientific breakthrough: “hijacker therapy,” a type of medical treatment that could attack, modify and spread alongside a virus, potentially treating afflicted individuals and slowing the spread of infections like HIV.

Bored Panda: People On Twitter Explain How American Voting Works And People From Other Countries Can’t Believe It

Robertas Lisickis   BoredPanda staff   3 DAYS AGO

Voting is done differently around the world. There are different systems of voting whereby either the popular vote wins or voters decide on reps who decide on the winner and whatnot.

But then there’s also the process of voting—where do people go, how do they cast their vote, and, most importantly, how long will it take. Well, the last one, turns out, is in HUGE contrast when it comes to the US and the rest of the world.

Apparently, Americans spend countless hours queuing and waiting for their turn to enter the voting booth and to cast their vote, whereas the rest of the world spends around as much time voting as one would spend waiting for the barista to make and deliver their coffee at Starbucks.

The internet is left surprised with how long Americans have to wait in line just so that they could vote

So, since it’s voting season in the US, a lot of Americans are sharing their considerably extreme voting experiences on Twitter. And then there’s Europeans and everyone else sharing their complete opposite experiences.

Turns out, people in the US often stand in line for hours, and I do mean literally hours

A number of US citizens shared how they stood in line for two hours at the very least to a whopping eleven hours just so that they could vote. Talk about dedication to your country!

While some stand in line for about 2 hours, Johnta Austin had to do so for a whopping 11 hours!

Here’s what a typical voting line looks like as shown by one Twitter user

And it doesn’t matter what weather it is either—people are committed

This prompted a response from people from other countries around the world: Canada, France, Germany, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, and others. It turned out, the amount of time citizens of these countries spent partaking in the voting process was around three minutes. At worst, it was fifteen minutes. See the stark contrast here?

More specifically, in Sweden, it was three minutes because there was a senior in a wheelchair in the queue; in France, hardly no waiting time and no more than 10-people queues; in Canada, no more than two minutes; in Australia, where voting is mandatory, no more than three minutes. The list goes on and on.

It wasn’t long until someone asked the question—how long does voting take outside of the US?

Many internauts from Europe, Australia, Canada, Mexico and other places  responded with the opposite of what US voters experience

So, why are Americans practically breaking records with their queuing to vote? The short answer seems to be the lack of resources (polling locations, voting station employees, etc.) to deal with the huge demand.

The longer answer, though, is “it’s complicated.” Besides the fact that too many people show up and there aren’t enough polling stations and people managing them, there’s also the long voting process within the ballots, technical problems, lack of polling station staff training, underfunding of election administrations, and a number of other small problems that make up one huge issue.

For the most part, the average voter outside the US spends around 2–3 minutes and no more than 20 voting

Though, interesting to think, but some say that the long lines aren’t all that bad. It is said to be a celebration by those who endure them—it is a sign of patriotic enthusiasm. Others do think it’s more a form of sadism rather than a celebration, but nobody’s judging if it works for people.

What are your thoughts on this? Tell us your voting experience in your country in the comment section below!

When you watch Dr. Jill Biden shaking every hand in sight, stuffing gift bags for soldiers, or inviting veterans and their families to the vice president’s house, you may be tempted to say, “Isn’t she nice!” That would be a mistake, as correspondent Rita Braver points out. Dem Guru On Getting Tough With Trump: ‘Get A Diaper Or Get To Work’ | MSNBC

Bored Panda: Banksy Sponsored Rescue Boat To Help Refugees Crossing The Mediterranean

  Julija Svidrait? and Lukas Garnelis

Banksy, who is an anonymous England-based street artist and political activist, has been touching on the topic of the migrant crisis with his works for quite a while now. Recently, he/she (or they?) went one step further by funding the Louise Michel rescue boat to help refugees make it safely to Europe.

The ship is aimed to help those traversing from North Africa to Europe. Louise Michel is painted in a bright pink color and has Banksy’s artwork on it depicting a girl in a life vest holding a heart-shaped safety buoy.

This independent high-speed lifeboat was named after the 19th-century French feminist anarchist Louise Michel

Apparently, back in September 2019, Banksy sent a message to the captain of a number of NGO boats, Pia Klemp, because he wanted to help. “Hello Pia, I’ve read about your story in the papers. You sound like a badass,” Banksy’s letter read. “I am an artist from the UK and I’ve made some work about the migrant crisis, obviously I can’t keep the money. Could you use it to buy a new boat or something? Please let me know. Well done. Banksy.”

At first, Klemp thought that this letter was just a joke

The artist’s involvement is not hands-on: Banksy’s financially backing everything that the team is doing without being active in the operations, run by a 10-person crew of European activists. “Banksy won’t pretend that he knows better than us how to run a ship, and we won’t pretend to be artists,” Pia Klemp told The Guardian.

“Measuring 30 meters in length and capable of over 28 knots, she was bought with proceeds from the sale of Banksy artwork—who then decorated her with a fire extinguisher”

“The Louise Michel is a former French Navy boat we’ve customised to perform search and rescue. She is as agile as she is pink. Measuring 30 meters in length and capable of over 28 knots, she was bought with proceeds from the sale of Banksy artwork—who then decorated her with a fire extinguisher. She is captained and crewed by a team of rescue professionals drawn from across Europe. She runs on a flat hierarchy and a vegan diet,” reads the official website of the Louise Michel rescue boat.

The Louise Michel left the Spanish port of Burrinia in secret on August 18th

“To uphold maritime law and rescue anyone in peril without prejudice,” the team describes their mission on the website. “We onboard the Louise Michel believe we are all individuals, nationality should not make a difference to what rights one has and how we treat each other. We answer the SOS call of all those in distress, not just to save their souls—but our own.”

According to the International Organization for Migration, more than 100,000 migrants tried to cross the Mediterranean last year from North Africa with more than 1,200 dying in the attempt

Turns out, the whole planning of the mission happened in secrecy between London, Berlin, and Burriana. The crew didn’t want media attention to compromise their goals because it could have lead to European authorities attempting to thwart the mission. For this reason, the team agreed to release the news about the boat only after carrying out the first rescue.

As of now, the crew has rescued approximately 350 people

Apparently, a few days ago, the Louise Michel sent a distress call saying it was overloaded with migrants. Because of that, several of the most vulnerable ones were picked up by the Italian coast guard and the rest were transferred onto another vessel. “#LouiseMichel no longer has guests onboard, but the struggle of the survivors is not over,” the Louise Michel team wrote on their Twitter.

Some people were praising this idea

Meet the New Yes Man on Trump’s COVID Task Force: Dr. Scott Atlas Wants U.S. to Adopt Herd Immunity

Sep 1, 2020  Democracy Now!

As the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the United States passes 6 million, with a death toll of over 183,000, the Trump administration is loosening coronavirus restrictions, fast-tracking vaccine approval and disregarding safety tests, and now one of Trump’s top medical advisers is pushing for the country to adopt a controversial “herd immunity” strategy, raising alarm among public health officials. Washington Post health reporter Yasmeen Abutaleb says Dr. Scott Atlas is not an epidemiologist and was brought on specifically because he would back President Trump’s position “about how the pandemic was going, that the threat was receding, that the country should reopen.” We also speak with Yale epidemiologist Gregg Gonsalves, who argues the U.S. is already following an “implicit” herd immunity policy. “They realize it’s politically toxic, so they don’t want to use the phrase, but if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it is a duck,” he says. #DemocracyNow Democracy Now! is an independent global news hour that airs on nearly 1,400 TV and radio stations Monday through Friday. Photographer Captures Amusing Pics Of Stunning Mantises, And Here Are 30 Of The Best Ones

Ilona Bali?nait? and Rokas Laurinavi?ius

Wildlife photographer Pang Way shoots a lot from up close. Mostly, little critters that don’t normally catch our attention and that are so small, we walk right past them without even noticing them.

A big and important part of Way’s work is mantises or praying mantises like people like to call them. They got this name for their prominent front legs, which are bent and held together at an angle that suggests the position of prayer.

But regardless of what you call them, these insects are formidable predators. They have triangular heads poised on a long “neck” or elongated thorax. Mantises can turn their heads 180 degrees to scan the area with two large compound eyes and three other simple eyes located between them.

Typically green or brown and well camouflaged in their surroundings, mantises lie in ambush or patiently stalk their quarry. They use their front legs to snare their prey with reflexes so quick that they are difficult to spot with the naked eye. Their legs are further equipped with spikes for snaring prey and pinning it in place.

Few photographers have portrayed just how stunning these little berserk fellas are. And Way is one of them. Continue scrolling and enjoy these fascinating pics.

Bored Panda: I Try To Bring Awareness To Plastic Waste With My Assemblage Paintings (22 Pics)

  Christine Rose Curry

Community member

Most conventional plastic crap is made from non-biodegradable petrochemicals—instead of decomposing over time, it simply breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces (micro-plastics).

Since the 1950’s, plastic has become a popular material in the world: used in endless ways, found in countless items, and often made to be discarded and disregarded in mere minutes.

Since the majority of plastic is non-biodegradable, plastic waste has only accumulated over time, affecting our physical health and environment. In an effort to bring awareness to this issue and to keep some plastic from going into landfills or the ocean, I make art from plastic waste. What can we do to make a change?

Spread awareness, be mindful of plastic consumption, demand more plastic be made biodegradable—buying only plastic items that are. Be creative about making a change!

China Doesn’t Want Our Plastic Crap Anymore

At the end of 2017, China announced it was going to start restricting imported plastic (and other goods) for recycling. For decades, the USA had sent tons and tons of plastic to China for this reason. Once the restrictions were put in place, waste management companies in America had to find other options for recycling. The two choices: greatly increase the price for recycling or throw it away— most have chosen the latter.

The New York Times                The Morning            August 28, 2020
By David Leonhardt

Good morning. Japan’s leader is resigning. The N.B.A. will resume. And Trump makes his case for re-election.

What is Trump’s strategy?

President Trump and the first lady, Melania Trump, arrived for his acceptance speech on the South Lawn of the White House.Doug Mills/The New York Times The goal of this week’s Republican convention wasn’t always clear. At times, it presented President Trump — as a champion of immigrants, a promoter of racial justice and a defender of women — in ways that obviously conflicted with his entire time as a public figure.
Trump’s campaign doesn’t really think it can reinvent him in the minds of most voters at this stage, does it? No, it doesn’t. But it doesn’t have to, either. And there was indeed a method to the through-the-looking-glass messages that the convention was offering this week.
Trump’s record on diversity and national unity — on race, immigration and gender — is a problem for him. It makes him anathema to many progressives, who would never vote for him, of course. But it also weighs on some swing voters and disaffected Republicans who haven’t yet made up their minds, polls suggest.
This group includes people who voted for Trump in 2016 and flipped to the Democrats in the 2018 midterms. It includes people who didn’t used to express concern about racism but have begun doing so in recent months. It includes whites and a significant number of Latinos, among others.

To these voters, the question of Trump’s racism or sexism isn’t binary. They know he can be ugly — or “unfiltered,” as his daughter Ivanka Trump put it last night. But these swing voters have their limits. To vote for Trump in 2020, they want to believe that he is different from the worst version of himself.

One of the Republican Party’s main goals of the past four nights was giving these voters permission to believe that.
That’s why the convention included testimonials to his personal character — as well as a parade of female, Black and Latino speakers (unlike many recent White House meetings). “I can tell you, he really cares,” Ja’Ron Smith, the highest-ranking Black official in Trump’s White House, said from the stage last night. For the same reason, the Trump campaign has already been aggressive in spending money on Spanish-language ads, especially in Arizona, Florida and North Carolina.
“What the Republicans know is they don’t need to win a majority of our vote,” Chuck Rocha, a Latino strategist and the author of “Tío Bernie,” about Bernie Sanders’s outreach efforts, told my colleague Ian Prasad Philbrick. Trump won about 30 percent of the Latino vote in 2016 and is trying to do slightly better this year. The main target, Rocha added, is “Latino men who care a lot about law and order and keeping their families safe.”

Trump’s overall campaign strategy came into focus this week. It looks like this:

Sand off the worst parts of his image with voters who haven’t yet made up their minds. Offer a misleading defense of his records on the coronavirus. Remind people of the growing pre-virus economy. And define Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as politically correct establishment figures who will refuse to stand up to rioters or socialists.
“Your vote,” Trump said in his speech closing the convention last night, “will decide whether we protect law-abiding Americans, or whether we give free rein to violent anarchists, agitators and criminals who threaten our citizens.”
This week, Republicans had the nation’s political stage to make their case, just as Democrats had it the previous week to make theirs: against Trump as a lying, racist, corrupt, would-be authoritarian. The terms of the debate are set. The campaign has less than 10 weeks remaining.
For more: Watch a five-minute highlight video from the final night of the convention and read a fact check of the speakers. Times Opinion writers also picked the best and worst moments.

Three more big stories

1.      Japan’s leader is stepping down

Shinzo Abe announces his resignation on Friday in Tokyo.Carl Court/Getty Images
Japan’s prime minister, Shinzo Abe, announced today that he would resign because of illness, just days after becoming the country’s longest-serving leader. He said he had suffered a relapse of a bowel disease.
Abe, the leader of the conservative Liberal Democratic Party, has lost popularity recently as the economy has weakened.
2.     Aftermath of the Kenosha shooting

Kyle Rittenhouse, left, in Kenosha, Wis., on Tuesday. The 17-year-old has been charged in the fatal shooting of two people during protests in the city, after a Black man was shot by the police.Adam Rogan/Journal Times, via Associated Press

Jacob Blake, the Wisconsin man shot by the police, is handcuffed to his hospital bed despite being partially paralyzed, his father said. “He can’t go anywhere. Why do you have him cuffed to the bed?” Blake’s father told The Chicago Sun-Times, adding that he did not know why his son had been arrested.

Political reaction: Trump made only a glancing reference to Kenosha last night. Joe Biden condemned acts of vandalism and violence, affirmed protesters’ right to demonstrate peacefully and accused Trump of “pouring gasoline on the fire.”
And in sports: N.B.A. players have decided to resume the playoffs, after boycotting games as a protest against police violence.
3.     Hurricane Laura thrashes Louisiana

Flooding near Lake Charles, La., on Thursday.David J. Phillip/Associated Press
Hurricane Laura plowed through Louisiana on Thursday, killing at least six people, ripping apart buildings and causing a fire at a chemical plant. This drone footage shows the scale of devastation.
Still, the destruction and storm surge were less severe than many had feared.
Here’s what else is happening
IDEA OF THE DAY: THE HATCH ACT
This week’s Republican convention appeared to violate the Hatch Act, the law barring federal employees from engaging in political activities while on the job. The convention included live White House events as well as a speech from Secretary of State Mike Pompeo during a diplomatic trip.
No previous convention, by either party, has so flagrantly flouted the act, as Peter Baker — who has covered every president since Bill Clinton — explained in this story.
The apparent violations have sparked a debate among legal experts, writers and others: Are these violations truly alarming (as experts largely agree that Trump’s use of the government to profit himself and his family have been)? Or are they instead a less subtle version of what every president has done?
The case for outrage: The Hatch Act is meant to give Americans confidence that officials won’t treat them differently based on politics — and the government is not a personal extension of the president. Brazenly flouting the law is a declaration that having a fair, trustworthy government doesn’t matter, Susan Hennessey and Scott Anderson write in The Washington Post.
Keeping government and politics separate is one of those traditions — like past presidents generally avoiding outright lies — that democracy depends on, Trump’s critics say. Trump’s approach is “an abuse of the office,” Tom Ridge, a Republican former Cabinet member, said.
The case against: Some experts argue that Republicans were careful to find loopholes in the Hatch Act and avoided violating it. Pompeo, for instance, said he did not use State Department resources to record his speech. And past presidents have used government resources to help their campaigns, organizing trips and policy announcements around visits to swing states.
National Review’s Dan McLaughlin argued that the Hatch Act should apply fairly strictly to “civil servants who are not political appointees.” But doing so “makes a lot less sense when dealing with people everybody knows to be political actors,” he added.

The world is plagued by many problems. Issues like climate change and the coronavirus pandemic are just the tip of the iceberg as there are also many other social, economic, peace and security, human rights, as well as many other types of problems still waiting to be resolved.

But where there’s a problem, there’s a solution.

Meet Ajeet Singh, the founder of Guria, India’s NGO against human trafficking and forced prostitution, who comes with his own inspiring story that has led him and his organization to save thousands from captivity.

When Ajeet was 17, he met a young nautch dancer at a party who turned out to be a prostitute

When Ajeet was 17 years old and still in college, he was attending a cousin’s party that had a dancer, a “nautch girl”, performing for the guests. Historically, nautch was a popular court dance performed by girls in India that symbolized grace and elegance. Before that, it was a devotional dance performed in temples for spiritual reasons only.

“I felt really bad about the way people were behaving towards her,” Ajeet said at the Thomson Reuters Foundation Trust Conference on modern slavery. “I waited for the whole night until I could talk to her.”

However, nautch girls nowadays are shunned as prostitutes. And guests were treating this dancer as one. Ajeet felt bad about the way they were behaving towards her, so he waited the entire night to talk to her in hopes of helping her get out of such a life. He eventually found out that she was a mother of three, making Ajeet want to help them even more.

He also learned that she had 3 kids and wanting to help, he decided to adopt and raise them

“I thought, what if I adopted her children,” Ajeet said. “And that was the beginning.” He began teaching them in his spare time away from college, thus providing them with the opportunity to study, to gain knowledge, and to break free from the vicious cycle, as is often the case given the context, in hopes of creating a new life for them.

Some years later, Ajeet took the next logical step and founded an organization called Guria with the aim of fighting sexual exploitation of women and children. Specifically, it aims to prevent human trafficking and unsafe migration, to end child prostitution, and to prevent second generation prostitution.

Ajeet taught them during his spare time, providing an opportunity to turn their lives around and break the vicious cycle given the context

Guria aims to achieve this by ending victimized women’s and children’s dependency on criminal organizations involved in drugs and sexual exploitation, providing them with opportunities to better their lives through education, health, emotional support, vocational training throughout their new lives.

Since Ajeet founded Guria, the organization has managed to save over 2470 persons from slavery, including commercial sexual exploitation and bonded labor and over 150 children have adopted alternative sources of livelihood outside the red-light area, all thanks to Ajeet’s initiative.

Soon, he established an NGO that aims to fight sexual exploitation of women and children

According to Guria’s website, it is currently supporting the education and vocational training of over 5400 children, of which 460 have been admitted to formal schools. The total children supported now is over 6800.

This is besides all of the committees, campaigns, events, and organizations against human trafficking and sexual exploitation that it has established since the founding of the organization in 1993.

Since establishment in 1993, Ajeet and his organization saved nearly 2,500 people from sex trafficking

The UN estimates that there are over 660,000 prostitutes in India—second only to Congo, which is estimated to have over 2.9 million. Further estimates reveal that there might be at least around 8 million people living in modern slavery in India. It doesn’t help that India is infamous for its culture of violence and abuse against women.

According to Ajeet himself, there are 3 million women within the sex industry in India, of which around 40% are children. Around 75% of these minors enter the sex trade through traficking.

His organization provided over 5,400 kids with an education and the total children count supported by the organization now is over 6,800

Unfortunately, it’s not just India that has a problem with this but the whole world. Bored Panda has covered a story of a group of retired navy seals who now spend their days preventing child trafficking in the United States. They have saved 238 children from being trafficked so far.

Along with his wife Santwana Manju, Ajeet continues to run the 36-member organization, fighting off human trafficking by raiding brothels to rescue children trapped inside and confronting human traffickers and pursuing legal cases on behalf of the victims. Needless to say, confronting criminals on the front line ain’t easy, so consider donating to help the cause. Guria staff have been physically and verbally abused and both Ajeet and his wife have received death threats. But, they march on because the mission is more important.

“We strongly believe that it is not charity that is wanting in the world – it is justice to make a humane world where all beings co-exist in harmony,” notes Guria’s website.

He now runs the NGO together with his wife Santwana Manju

The Washington Post: Coronavirus Updates – The deadliest day since May, August 13, 2020

By Avi Selk

The latest

The United States recorded the most covid-19 deaths in a single day since mid-May on Wednesday: nearly 1,500 fatalities.

The toll escalated as a new study found that New York City’s death rate in the first two months of its outbreak rivaled that of the infamous 1918 flu pandemic. “For anyone who doesn’t understand the magnitude of what we’re living through, this pandemic is comparable in its effect on mortality to what everyone agrees is the previous worst pandemic,” said Jeremy S. Faust, an emergency physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston who led the research team.

In extraordinary comments to Fox News, President Trump said he is trying to prevent the U.S. Postal Service from delivering millions of mail-in ballots to voters by holding up $25 billion in emergency funding for the agency. “They need that money in order to make the post office work, so it can take all of these millions and millions of ballots,” Trump said.

The cash-strapped mail service is already experiencing days-long delays after Trump’s new postmaster general implemented new policies including a ban on overtime pay. Congressional Democrats have insisted on emergency funding for the agency in their negotiations over a new stimulus bill, which collapsed Thursday as the Senate adjourned for the next three and a half weeks. Many health experts say mail-in voting is the safest way for people to vote in November, but Trump has baselessly attacked efforts to expand it as a plot to steal the election. The president’s likely opponent, Joe Biden, called Trump’s latest comments “an assault on our democracy and economy by a desperate man.”

The Supreme Court ruled on pandemic-related voter relief for the first time Thursdaydenying a GOP request that would have required a witness to be present when Rhode Island voters cast absentee ballots.

About 960,000 workers filed for unemployment insurance last week — the first time new claims dropped below 1 million since the outbreak intensified in March.

Hollywood is getting back to work after a five-month hiatus, but its fictional worlds will likely be transformed and restricted by the pandemic. “Crowd scenes are a no-go,” our business desk wrote. “Real-world locations will be limited. On-screen romance will be less common, sometimes restricted to actors who have off-screen relationships.”

Other important news

A Georgia high school made famous by viral photos of barefaced crowds in its hallways on the first day of class will remain closed through the week after 35 people there tested positive for covid-19.

Popular, seemingly high-tech masks with exhalation vents and valves don’t actually protect people from covid-19, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned.

Your questions, answered

“Could you please discuss the cleaning of masks and the use of masks with filters? Is the recommendation to wash after each use to kill the virus or eliminate the wearer’s own germs? Can surgical masks be washed without ruining their effectiveness?” — Katrinka in Maryland

Numerous studies have shown that a simple cloth mask — without valves, vents or filters — is ideal for controlling the spread of the coronavirus outside health-care settings. In updated guidance, the CDC specifically warns against wearing masks with exhalation valves or vents, even with disposable filters, because “this type of mask does not prevent the person wearing the mask from transmitting COVID-19 to others.”

The truth is that any mask that advertises “breathability” or “better airflow” is likely allowing viral particles through. A mask made up of a few layers of cotton fabric is still the best way to control the spread of the coronavirus.

In terms of cleaning, Post wellness reporter Allyson Chiu published a story today that addresses frequently asked questions about how to take care of your face masks.

What are the general guidelines for proper mask care?

For cloth masks, which have exploded in popularity in recent months, all three experts interviewed say daily washings are a must.

“Treat your mask like your underwear,” said Jade Flinn, a nurse educator for the Biocontainment Unit at Johns Hopkins Medicine. “You want to change it every day.”

Can N95s or surgical masks be washed?

Unlike the cloth variety, these masks cannot be effectively sanitized by a standard washing, said Elizabeth Mullans, a board-certified dermatologist based in Houston.

“Hospitals may be able to disinfect them, but there’s no way that the average person could go ahead and disinfect them,” Mullans said.

How do I wash my cloth mask?

The widely recommended method, which has also been promoted by the CDC, is simple: Throw the dirty mask in warm or hot water with your regular laundry. Health experts suggest using a fragrance-free,

hypoallergenic detergent if your mask has caused skin irritations such as increased acne or rash.

Can sunlight disinfect a mask?

“What I’m seeing is that folks that put it in the sun sometimes are thinking that they are decontaminating the mask,” said Michael Knight, an assistant professor of medicine at George Washington University. “Yes, UV light comes from the sun, but it’s not in a consistent amount to say that ‘yes, this has been decontaminated.’ ”

In the case of surgical or N95 masks, sunlight could be a bad thing, Flinn said, because it can degrade the special materials in some masks.

The New York Times   The Morning            August 13, 2020
By Sanam Yar and Ian Prasad Philbrick
Good morning. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris made their debut as running mates. The British economy sunk into its deepest recession on record. And the QAnon conspiracy theory has found its way to the mainstream.
The rise of QAnon

Over three years, the far-right conspiracy theory QAnon has spread from the outskirts of the internet into the mainstream. And by next year, it will most likely make its way into Congress: A QAnon supporter is almost sure to be elected after winning a Republican House primary runoff in Georgia this week.
It’s a remarkable rise for a group that believes in, among other things, a ring of Satan-worshiping, child-trafficking criminals led by prominent Democrats. We spoke with our colleague Kevin Roose, who has covered QAnon extensively, to get a sense of how the movement expanded its reach.
Social media platforms are a big part of it. “It’s still very fringe in terms of its ideology, but not in terms of its scale,” Kevin said. “We’ve seen QAnon Facebook groups swell to hundreds of thousands of members, and they are routinely driving conversations on social media.”
This week, NBC News reported that an internal Facebook investigation found thousands of QAnon-supporting groups and pages with millions of members and followers. Twitter permanently suspended thousands of accounts associated with the movement last month. And TikTok has blocked searches for QAnon-related hashtags.
But these companies have “realized belatedly that this is a major problem,” Kevin said. “The horse has left the barn.”
The pandemic, which led many people to spend more time online, has also bolstered the movement, Kevin said: “Our social interactions are mostly taking place online, and that means that the communities that have power online, including QAnon, are a much bigger part of the discourse.”
Much of its growth also comes from its ability to attach itself to, and then absorb, both legitimate causes and “every major conspiracy theory of the past 50 years,” Kevin said.
Its followers are “deliberately attempting to radicalize new groups of people,” he noted, by infiltrating Facebook groups focused on vaccine safety, parenting, and natural food and health.
“These are people who might be skeptical of mainstream science or authorities,” Kevin said, “and they’re inserting their messages to those communities. So that’s what people need to be made aware of — these aren’t people hanging out in the dark corners of the internet anymore.”
FOUR MORE BIG STORIES
1.     Biden-Harris ticket makes its debut

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, in their first public event together on Wednesday.Erin Schaff/The New York Times
Joe Biden and Kamala Harris made their first public appearance as running mates on the Democratic ticket in Wilmington, Del., yesterday afternoon. The event included sharp criticisms of President Trump’s handling of the coronavirus and the economic crisis. You can watch highlights of their joint appearance in a Times video.
Reactions from both sides:
  • Progressives, many of whom had disregarded Harris as part of the Democratic establishment, proclaimed their support for the ticket on Wednesday and reiterated that removing Trump from office was their priority.
  • Conservative media figures wasted no time hurling personal attacks at Harris, questioning her racial identity, mispronouncing her name and mocking her voice.
  • Trump called Harris “nasty” at least four times on Tuesday, wrote Katie Rogers, a turn to his preferred misogynistic trope. He also called her the “meanest, most horrible, most disrespectful” member of the Senate.
2. The pandemic’s true toll
The number of U.S. residents who have died since March is now more than 200,000 higher than it would be in a normal year, a Times analysis found. Those “excess deaths” most likely reflect the true cost of the pandemic — and suggest that the official death toll may be a substantial undercount.

By The New York Times | Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
As the coronavirus outbreak in the U.S. has moved south from its early epicenter in New York, so have the unusual patterns in deaths from all causes. Many of the recent coronavirus cases and deaths in the South may have been driven largely by reopenings and relaxed social-distancing restrictions.
In other virus developments:
3. Police raid Hong Kong newspaper
Police officers this week raided the newsroom of Apple Daily, Hong Kong’s biggest pro-democracy newspaper, part of a crackdown on free expression under a national security law the Chinese government imposed on the semiautonomous region in June. Jimmy Lai, the paper’s founder, and four executives face possible charges under the new law.
The raid led to a show of support from Hong Kong residents: The paper said it printed 550,000 copies on Tuesday, nearly eight times a regular run. But some reporters worry about its survival in Hong Kong’s newly restrictive climate.
4. American guns invade the U.K.

The National Ballistics Intelligence Service in Birmingham, England.Andrew Testa for The New York Times
Gun deaths in Britain, while still rare, have risen over the last few years. One reason, British authorities say, is an influx of firearms being smuggled from the United States.
At least 782 American guns have been discovered by British police since 2017, data obtained by The Times shows. Some of them can be traced to loosely regulated gun fairs in states like Florida.
“Weapons that don’t matter in the United States, because America deals in millions, routinely have an enormous impact in the U.K., because of the extraordinary scarcity of handguns,” one expert said.
Here’s what else is happening
  • Many children receiving chemotherapy in Beirut now have nowhere to turn for treatment after an explosion last week destroyed hospitals and wiped out medicine stockpiles.
  • Israel said it had thwarted a cyberattack by a North Korea-linked hacking group. Security researchers said the hackers were successful and stole classified data that could be shared with Iran.
  • Sumner Redstone, the billionaire entrepreneur who built a media empire encompassing CBS and Viacom, died in Los Angeles on Tuesday. He was 97.
  • Three people were arrested on charges that they threatened and tried to bribe women who accused the singer R. Kelly of sexual abuse, federal prosecutors said Wednesday.
  • The rapper Kanye West privately met with Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, in Colorado last weekend. West has filed petitions to get on the November ballots for president in several states in an apparent bid to siphon support from Biden.
  • Lives Lived: Matt Herron, a magazine photojournalist, made one of his most memorable shots in 1965: In it, a white Mississippi police officer tries to seize a small American flag being waved by a Black 5-year-old; next to them, another officer holds a confiscated protester’s sign reading, “No More Police Brutality.” Herron died at 89.

IDEA OF THE DAY: CAN TRUMP COME BACK?
Less than 12 weeks from Election Day, Trump trails Biden by about eight percentage points nationally. Is there still time for him to turn things around?
Yes, some observers say. The polls will most likely tighten as Election Day approaches, and FiveThirtyEight’s forecast currently gives Trump a 28 percent chance to win. Trump could exploit Biden’s long record on trade issues or the Iraq War to close the gap. Or he could try to engineer an October surprise involving a coronavirus vaccine.
Factors outside the president’s direct control could also help him, Ross Douthat, a Times Op-Ed columnist, argued recently. The pandemic or the economy could improve, or public opinion could turn against recent racial-justice protests.
Others think a comeback is unlikely. Given Trump’s unpopularity and the state of the economy, other poll-watchers are skeptical that he can make up much ground. Undecided voters appear less willing to back Trump this year than in 2016. And voters in some states can begin voting as soon as next month.
“The only way Trump could even conceivably eke out a win on Election Day would be through voter suppression on an improbably (perhaps impossibly) massive scale,” The Washington Post’s Eugene Robinson wrote.

Bored Panda: People Are Sharing “Do’s And Don’t’s” From 1918-1920 During The Spanish Flu, It Shows How History Repeats Itself

Rokas Laurinavi?ius and Mindaugas Bal?iauskas

History tends to repeat itself, and even though COVID-19 is not the worst flu whatsoever, we as a society seem to be making the same mistakes we did in 1918 during the Spanish Flu outbreak.

Talya Varga turned to Twitter to share an old newspaper article allegedly showing a list of “do’s and don’t’s” for preventing the Spanish Flu. Sadly, almost all of the entries look painfully familiar.

“Wear a mask,” reads the first. “Wash your hands before each meal”, says another. Not to mention the one that urges to “not disregard the advice of a specialist just because you do not understand.”

After Varga highlighted the issue, her tweet immediately went viral, sparking an important discussion.

The 1918 influenza pandemic is one of the most severe pandemics in recent history.

It was caused by an H1N1 virus with genes of avian origin. Although there is no universal consensus regarding where the virus came from, it spread worldwide from 1918-1919.

In the US, it was first identified in military personnel in spring 1918.

Some estimates suggest that as many as 500 million people or one-third of the world’s population became infected with this virus. The number of deaths was considered to be at least 50 million worldwide with about 675,000 occurring in the United States.

As the tweet started to go viral, more and more people began responding to it

Social distancing saved thousands of American lives during the Spanish flu outbreak. Philadelphia, for example, detected its first case of a deadly, fast-spreading strain of influenza on September 17, 1918. The very next day, in an attempt to halt the virus’ spread, city officials launched a campaign against coughing, spitting, and sneezing in public. Good start. 10 days later, however, despite the potential epidemic, the city hosted a parade that 200,000 people attended.

Flu cases continued to climb until finally, on October 3, schools, churches, theaters, and public gathering spaces were closed.

Two weeks after the first reported case, there were at least 20,000 of them.

For comparison, when a case popped up in St. Louis, the city shut down most public gatherings and quarantined victims in their homes just two days later.

By the end of the pandemic, the death rate in St. Louis was less than half of the rate in Philadelphia.

About 358 people per 100,000 died in St Louis, while there were about 748 deaths per 100,000 people in Philadelphia.

It’s pretty saddening to see that while technology and medicine have made huge leaps since the beginning of the 20th century, our mindsets have somewhat remained the same, and we can’t come together to fight this microscopic yet very powerful enemy.
