2. “Red lines” summit

Courtesy TIME
After a bitter blast from Russia’s Vladimir Putin and tough talk from President Biden, both sides agree: Don’t count on much from today’s summit.

·  “We’re not expecting a big set of deliverables out of this meeting,” a senior Biden administration official told reporters on Air Force One from Brussels to Geneva. “No breaking of bread.”

·  “I’m not sure that any agreements will be reached,” Putin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov said.

Biden said this week at his NATO press conference that in areas where he and Putin don’t agree, he’ll “make it clear what the red lines are.”

·  Biden and Putin will greet each other about 7 a.m. ET in Villa La Grange, a mansion in a 75-acre park overlooking Lake Geneva.

·  A Putin news conference is scheduled for noon EDT, followed by a Biden news conference.

Graphic: MSNBC’s “Morning Joe”

Former Russian diplomat Vladimir Frolov told Reuters that Putin wants respectful treatment like members of the Soviet Politburo got in the 1960s-1980s, with “a symbolic recognition of Russia’s geopolitical parity with the U.S.”

·  In contrast to President Trump’s 2018 meeting with Putin in Helsinki, which included a meeting accompanied only by interpreters, Biden and Putin aren’t expected to have any solo dealings.

Go deeper: “Making history: The scramble to document presidents’ summits.”

1 big thing: Feisty finish to Biden-Putin

Presidents Biden and Putin shake hands before the summit. Photo: Peter Klaunzer via Getty Images
President Biden arrived in aviator shades, tossed his jacket off and tried a one-liner about invading Russia that he clarified as a joke.

·  In classic Biden fashion, the president used a post-summit news conference to explain a shorter-than-expected meeting with Vladimir Putin that produced few immediate results, Axios’ Margaret Talev, Glen Johnson, Dave Lawler and Zachary Basu report.

Between the lines: There were parallels with Biden’s early approach to his dealings with Congress. He sought common ground while making clear he’ll muscle ahead when they can’t work together.

·  “My agenda is not against Russia” but for the U.S., Biden said in Switzerland.

·  There were “no threats,” no hyperbole — just “simple assertions.” The relationship is “not about trust,” but self-interest and verification.

·  “I did what I came to do,” Biden said, using words like “practical,” “mutual interest” and “benefit the world” — while saying he wanted Putin to hear directly from him what the U.S. considers out of bounds.

·  He said he addressed election interference, cyberattacks, Ukraine, trade, the fate of imprisoned Americans, and the treatment of jailed Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. If Navalny dies, Biden said, it would be “devastating for Russia.”

In a flash of exasperation at a skeptical question shouted by CNN’s Kaitlan Collins as he left the stage, Biden snapped that when it comes to Putin, “I am not confident he will change his behavior.”

·  Biden later offered a more nuanced explanation to reporters: There’s “a value to being realistic,” he said, while putting on “an optimistic face.”

Speaking Russian at a 55-minute news conference just before Biden’s, Putin called the summit “constructive,” and noted the countries had agreed their ambassadors would imminently return to their posts in Moscow and Washington.

·  “Many of our joint positions are divergent,” Putin said. “I think both sides manifested a determination to try and understand each other and try and converge our positions.”

BBC News: Biden and Putin praise Geneva summit talks but discord remains

Published 6.16.2021

media caption Biden Putin Summit: Decoding the world leaders’ body language

The presidents of the US and Russia have praised their talks in Geneva but have made little concrete progress at the first such meeting since 2018.

Disagreements were stated, said US President Joe Biden, but not in a hyperbolic way, and he said Russia did not want a new Cold War.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Mr. Biden was an experienced statesman and the two “spoke the same language”.

The talks lasted around three hours, less time than was scheduled.

Mr. Biden said they did not need to spend more time talking and there was now a genuine prospect to improve relations with Russia.

As a gift to the Russian leader, Mr. Biden brought Mr. Putin a custom-made pair of aviator sunglasses, a style favoured by the US president, and a crystal sculpture of a bison. It is unclear whether Mr. Putin gave Mr. Biden a gift. In 2018, the Russian leader gave former President Donald Trump a soccer ball after a meeting in Helsinki, Finland.

The two sides agreed to begin a dialogue on nuclear arms control. They also said they would return ambassadors to each other’s capitals – the envoys were mutually withdrawn for consultations in March, after the US accused Russia of meddling in the 2020 presidential election.

However, there was little sign of agreement on other issues, including cyber-security, Ukraine and the fate of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who is currently serving a two-and-a-half-year sentence in a penal colony.

Mr Biden said there would be “devastating consequences” for Russia if Navalny died in prison.

media caption.WATCH: “If you don’t understand that you’re in the wrong business”

What did the leaders discuss?

Before the summit, both sides said relations were at rock bottom.

Mr. Putin hinted at a possible deal on exchanging prisoners, saying he believed compromises could be found.

On cyber-attacks, Mr. Putin brushed away accusations of Russian responsibility, saying that most cyber-attacks in Russia originated from the US.

Mr. Biden said he told Mr. Putin that critical infrastructure, such as water or energy, must be “off-limits” to hacking or other attacks.

“I looked at him and said how would you feel if ransomware took on the pipelines from your oil fields? He said it would matter,” Mr. Biden said, adding that if Russia violated these “basic norms” the US would retaliate.

The two sides differed sharply on human rights, including the right to protest.

Mr. Putin dismissed US concerns about Navalny, who recently undertook a 24-day hunger strike.

He said Navalny had ignored the law and knew he would face imprisonment when he returned to Russia after having sought medical treatment in Germany. Navalny says he was poisoned with a nerve agent on Mr. Putin’s orders – an accusation Mr. Putin denies.

He said Russia did not want disturbances on its territory comparable to the Capitol riots or the Black Lives Matter movement.

Mr. Biden dismissed Mr. Putin’s comments about Black Lives Matter as “ridiculous”, and said human rights would “always be on the table”.

media caption. The Russian president discusses the US president’s calls for “stable and predictable” relations

Asked why Russia would want to co-operate with the US, Mr. Biden said it was “in a very, very difficult spot right now”.

“They are being squeezed by China. They want desperately to remain a major power,” he told reporters, shortly before leaving Geneva.

At one point during his press conference, the US president appeared to nod in response to a reporter who asked if he trusted Mr. Putin. But the White House sent a tweet out soon after saying Mr. Biden was “very clearly not responding to any one question, but nodding in acknowledgment to the press generally”.

When a CNN journalist asked why Mr. Biden was confident Mr. Putin would change his behaviour, the US president became visibly irritated, retorting: “If you don’t understand that, you’re in the wrong business.” He later apologised for being a “wise guy”.

BBC Moscow correspondent Sarah Rainsford says Mr. Putin was keen to underline several times that Russia was a nuclear power – an important country, with an economy smaller than that of the US, but one that still mattered and that was why Mr. Biden had come to talk to him.

A worthy adversary

What is the metric for success following this summit? I think that Joe Biden will see a success as the fact that they engaged in detailed conversations about the knottiest issues around.

I think Mr. Biden – for a domestic audience – also wanted to prove that the ‘America is back’ tour also means ‘I’m not Donald Trump’. And I think he was very keen to underline this in his news conference that I attended a little while ago.

But as Mr. Biden goes back to the US now on Air Force One, he said: “We will respond if Russia doesn’t do what we want, on cyber, on human rights and the rest of it.” But respond how? That’s the bit of it that is unclear.

And I’m sure Mr. Putin returning to Moscow will be thinking: “Well, he said all these things, but what’s he going to do about it?” Mr. Putin has seen down Western leaders before. Maybe he will think that Mr. Biden is a different sort of American president.

But I think that Mr. Putin is going to test his boundaries, and Mr. Biden will eventually have to decide how he is going to respond.

Axios AM Deep Dive

By Mike Allen, Apr 03, 2021

Good afternoon and welcome to a Deep Dive by the Axios business team, led by managing editor Aja Whitaker-Moore, on the Federal Reserve — one of the most important economic stories in the world.

·  For more on how the Fed has changed the economy and our lives, check out this episode of the “Axios Re:Cap” podcast with Axios’ Dan Primack, Felix Salmon and Courtenay Brown.

2. Fed takes on race and climate

Photo illustration: Aïda Amer. Photos: Robert Gauthier/L.A Times, Stephen Maturen/Getty Images

Historically untouchable issues — like climate change and race — are now on the table for the Fed as it wades further into uncharted territory, writes Axios Closer author Courtenay Brown.

Why it matters: The about-face has implications for how one of the world’s most influential economic bodies steers policy and regulates the nation’s banks.

The Fed recently set up two committees to look at the impact of climate change on the economy and banks.

·  It may feel small, particularly for issues that have threatened and plagued the country for years.

·  But it’s a big deal for an institution that rarely — if ever — spoke publicly about these issues, let alone interwove them into considerations about the economy.

On climate: The Fed is behind its peers around the globe where climate change is less politicized.

On race: Fed officials have implied that the national unemployment rate wouldn’t be the only jobless measure they look at when measuring the health of the economy.

·  Black unemployment — which tends to fall much more slowly — might also be a factor.

What to watch: Resistance from Republicans.

·  The latest: Sen. Pat Toomey, the top Republican on the powerful Senate Banking Committee, warned this week of “mission creep” at the Fed’s regional banks, pointing to their research on topics like climate change and racial justice.

Go deeper.

3. Attack renews fear at Capitol

Photo: Samuel Corum/Getty Images

Capitol Police officers lower the flag over the U.S. Capitol to half-staff in honor of William “Billy” Evans, an 18-year Capitol Police officer. Evans died yesterday after a 25-year-old rammed his sedan into a barricade.

·  The attack once again put the city on edge, after threats stemming from the deadly insurrection in January had started to wane, the WashPost reports.

Photo: Carlos Barria/Reuters

The driver emerged with a knife, and started running at two officers. Authorities shot the suspect, who died at a hospital.

The suspect, Noah Green, described himself on Facebook as a follower of Louis Farrakhan, leader of the Nation of Islam, per the N.Y. Times.

7. Brace for 17-year cicadas

Adult cicadas in Reston, Va., during their last visit in 2004. Photo: Richard Ellis/Getty Images
In a few weeks, billions of periodical cicadas are predicted to emerge in parts of the eastern U.S. after 17 years underground, managing editor Alison Snyder writes in Axios Science.

·  Brood X is one of the largest of 15 groups of cicadas that come out en masse in the U.S. at various intervals.

·  Once the soil temperature reaches 64°F, typically in late April or early May, billions of noisy cicadas will emerge, mate and lay eggs — all within four to six weeks.

What we’re watching: D.C. could be the “main stage” for the 17-year swarm, the Washington Post reports:

Georgia and other Southern states will probably be where they first emerge around the end of March, experts say. But residents of the Washington area are standing at ground zero. The District, Maryland and Virginia are likely to host more of these animals than any other of the 14 states that share the experience.

See a map of Brood X. … Share this story.

Japan’s famous cherry blossoms bloom early as climate warms

By MARI YAMAGUCHI

March 30, 2021

TOKYO (AP) — Japan’s famous cherry blossoms have reached their flowery peak in many places earlier this year than at any time since formal records started being kept nearly 70 years ago, with experts saying climate change is the likely cause.

Japan’s favorite flower, called “sakura,” used to reach their peak bloom in April, just as the country celebrates the start of its new school and business year. Yet that date has been creeping earlier and now most years the blossoms are largely gone before the first day of school.

This year peak bloom was reached on March 26 in the ancient capital of Kyoto, the earliest since the Japan Meteorological Agency started collecting the data in 1953 and 10 days ahead of the 30-year average. Similar records were set this year in more than a dozen cities across Japan.

Some say it is the earliest peak bloom ever based on records from historic documents, diaries and poetry books from Kyoto. Osaka Prefecture University environmental scientist Yasuyuki Aono, who tracks such documents, said the earliest blooms he has found before this year were March 27 in the years 1612, 1409 and 1236, though there are not records for some years.

“We can say it’s most likely because of the impact of the global warming,” said Shunji Anbe, an official at the observations division at the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The agency tracks 58 “benchmark” cherry trees across the country, and this year 40 of those already have reached their peak bloom and 14 have done so in record time. The trees normally bloom for about two weeks each year from first bud to all the blossoms falling off.

Cherry trees are sensitive to temperature changes and the timing of their blooming can provide valuable data for climate change studies, Anbe said.

According to the agency data, the average temperature for March in Kyoto has climbed to 10.6 degrees Celsius (51.1 F) in 2020 from 8.6 C (47.5 F) in 1953. So far this year’s average March temperature in Japan has been 12.4 C (54.3 F).

Sakura have deeply influenced Japanese culture for centuries and regularly been used in poetry and literature with their fragility seen as a symbol of life, death and rebirth.

The Washington Post: Important developments in the pandemic.

By Ben Guarino
with Lindsey Bever
 Email

The latest

As vaccine doses become increasingly available in the U.S., hesitancy will become a major obstacle in getting shots into more arms. Those reluctant to get a vaccine represent a not-insignificant portion of the population. Almost 1 in 2 Republican men, and 47 percent of Donald Trump’s 2020 supporters, recently told NPR-PBS NewsHour-Marist pollsters they would choose to not get vaccinated against the coronavirus.

The nation’s top infectious-disease expert, Anthony S. Fauci, called those survey results “disturbing” on NBC News Sunday. He suggested the former president should use his popularity among Republicans to encourage vaccination.

But even a pro-vaccine ad starring Trump may not be as influential as it sounds. That’s one finding from a focus group of vaccine-hesitant Trump voters who said they would not be swayed by political appeals. If they are seeking information from conservative politicians, they should look elsewhere than Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) — who mistakenly believes having covid-19 is superior to the vaccine. It’s not. A previous infection is no reason to avoid getting the shot.

It’s no surprise that misinformation about vaccines thrives on social media. But a Facebook study of that problem, according to documents obtained by The Washington Post, contained some remarkable elements: For instance, half of all vaccine-hesitant content came from just 111 Facebook users.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is also conducting its own internal study of substandard information. A review of the agency’s pandemic recommendations posted in the Trump era, ordered by new CDC director Rochelle Walenskyfound some guidelines issued in summer 2020 that were “not primarily authored” by CDC staff. Parts of that guidance ignored the best scientific evidence. One set of recommendations, in August, discouraged people from getting tested if they didn’t show symptoms; facing widespread criticism, it was removed a month later.

Meanwhile on Monday, Germany became the largest European country to stop using the AstraZeneca vaccine over fears of blood clots. France and Italy also did so. Manufacturer AstraZeneca was adamant that its vaccine is not linked to an increased risk of clots.

Texas Federal Court Judge Throws Out GOP Challenge to Drive-Thru Voting. The Judiciary is Holding

Nov 2, 2020  Glenn Kirschner

A federal Court judge in Texas (appointed by George W. Bush) rejected attempts by Republicans to throw out 127,000 votes because they were cast at a drive-trhu voting location. So now, both the Texas State Supreme Court AND a federal court in Texas have ruled the votes must be counted. The state of the judiciary remains strong. Bored Panda: Feast Your Eyes On The 30 Incredible Winning Shots For The 2020 UK Landscape Photographer Of The Year Contest

Lukas Garnelis and Julija Svidrait?

Most of us would probably agree that living through these difficult times, it’s quite easy to forget how spectacular and mesmerizing the world we live in truly is. Luckily, we’ve got a lot of talented artists and annual photography contests, such as the Landscape Photographer of the Year competition, that do a very good job of reminding us of all these things.

For the 13th time, this year’s Landscape Photographer of the Year competition invited both professional and amateur photographers to celebrate the mesmerizing landscape of the United Kingdom. The contest has four categories as well as the youth competition for photographers aged 18 or under. The winner of the whole contest gets awarded the prestigious title “Landscape Photographer of the Year 2020” and £10,000. In addition, there are also prizes of £1000 and £500 for the images judged the best and second-best in each of four categories. The best photographer in the youth competition becomes the “Young Landscape Photographer of the Year 2020” and wins £1,000.

With that being said, Bored Panda invites you to look through some of the most spectacular shots from the Landscape Photographer of the Year competition 2020.

A Japanese Forestry Technique Prunes Upper Branches to Create a Tree Platform for More Sustainable Harvests

Colossal: A Japanese Forestry Technique Prunes Upper Branches to Create a Tree Platform for More Sustainable Harvests

OCTOBER 27, 2020  GRACE EBERT

Image via Wrath of Gnon

Literally translating to platform cedar, daisugi is a 14th- or 15th-century technique that offers an efficient, sustainable, and visually stunning approach to forestry. The method originated in Kyoto and involves pruning the branches of Kitayama cedar so that the remaining shoots grow straight upward from a platform. Rather than harvesting the entire tree for lumber, loggers can fell just the upper portions, leaving the base and root structure intact.

Although daisugi mostly is used in gardens or bonsai today, it originally was developed to combat a seedling shortage when the demand for taruki, a type of impeccably straight and knot-free lumber, was high. Because the upper shoots of Kitayama cedar can be felled every 20 years, which is far sooner than with other methods, the technique grew in popularity.

To see daisugi up close, watch this video chronicling pruning, felling, and transplanting processes. (via Kottke)

Fmr. Trump Homeland Security Official: “His Policies Are Racist” | Amanpour and Company

Oct 13, 2020  Amanpour and Company

Elizabeth Neumann is a former Department of Homeland Security official who served in the Trump administration from 2016-2020. Federal intelligence and security agencies say white supremacist extremists pose America’s deadliest domestic terror threat. The shocking evidence was on full view last week when the FBI busted a plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and overthrow the government. Elizabeth Neumann was assistant secretary for threat prevention at the Department for Homeland Security under President Trump. She says her repeated attempts to flag the dangers of these racist groups were ignored. A lifelong Republican, Neumann will not vote for the GOP this election cycle, as she explains to Hari Sreenivasan. Originally aired on October 12, 2020.

Three Takeaways from Amy Coney Barrett Confirmation Hearing: Guns, ACA/Obamacare and Recusal

Oct 13, 2020  Glenn Kirschner

Today’s hearing on Trump’s nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to be a Supreme Court Justice covered several big-ticket issues: her view on the Second Amendment’s right to bear arms and the law prohibiting possession of firearms by convicted felons; her skepticism over Chief Justice Roberts’ opinion upholding the Affordable Care Act (AC); and whether she would participate or refuse to participate (recuse herself) in any case involving a challenge of the results of the upcoming presidential election. Here is a layman’s explanation of these issues and more . . . *EDITED: IN THE VIDEO, IN 6:15 I INADVERTENTLY SAID THAT I DISAGREE WITH THE TWO JUDGE MAJORITY IN THE CANTOR CASE. I MEANT TO SAY, “I AGREE.” BUT I CORRECTLY STATED THAT I DISAGREE WITH JUDGE BARRETT’S DISSENT IN THE CANTOR CASE. She is so troubled by Trump’s abuse of his position that she says it’s her patriotic duty to take him down. And to do that she has written a brutal tell-all memoir. As Liam Bartlett discovers in an Australian television exclusive interview, the book is the ultimate insider’s account of a truly dysfunctional family. But it has added substance because Doctor Mary Trump is also a clinical psychologist. Her analysis of how her Uncle Don became Uncle Sam is not just a page-turner, it’s a horror story. National Geographic: Pride Month reads and Bare to the elements

Pride Month reads: Tales and memoirs by James BaldwinLucy Jane Bledsoe, and Samantha Allen are part of our 10 LBGTQ reads on travel adventures, part of our Around the World in Books series. The stories, writes Gillian Kendall for Nat Geo, “share both what unites us and what makes us unique, whether on an American heartland road trip or a bus journey to the tip of the world.” Also on the list: Andrew Sean Greer’s Less, a Pulitzer-winning novel about an aging writer who is jilted by a younger lover—and who travels the world with one shiny blue suit. Above, a Pride flags hangs in Antwerp, Belgium, in June 2013.

Bare to the elements: This image was taken in the Glencoe area of the Scottish Highlands. Houses like these have been endlessly romanticized in paintings and photographs: a lone cabin, bare to the elements, with nothing but nature as far as the eye can see, says photographer Michael George. “When I first saw this structure, with the tiny forest built to block some of the wind, I pulled my car over and spent some time wondering. Who lives there? With the harsh weather this area is known for, how is the structure still standing? Where do they get their groceries? I have no answers to these questions, but I like to imagine there is a basement as big as the house tucked underneath with supplies to get through the winter, a fire going, and a shelf of books to read.”

Vivid Photographs by Trung Huy Pham Capture Annual Water Lily Harvest in Vietnam

Each year as the Mekong Delta floods, locals gather hordes of long-stemmed lilies from the water-covered rice fields. Photographer Trung Huy Pham recently captured the annual harvest in a vivid series taken in the Long An and An Giang provinces in Vietnam. He photographs the farmers wearing canonical hats as they collect the fast-growing flowers, which often are used as decoration and as additions to hot pots. The pink water lilies swirl in the water, forming an S-shape as their stems align.

Pham shares an incredibly diverse array of shots taken around Vietnam on Instagram.

The New York Times <nytdirect@nytimes.com> Our Weekend Briefing,

July 4, 2020

By Remy Tumin and David Scull

Good morning, and happy Independence Day.
We tend to pause at the end of December to recognize and reflect on the year’s most memorable moments. But six months into 2020, it feels as if we’ve already lived decades. And we still have a presidential election to get through.
The first three months of the year seem a distant memory, or as your Weekend Briefing writer likes to refer to it, “a time ago.” Here’s a recap of 2020 so far with some help from Times reporters and editors.

Abedin Taherkenareh/EPA, via Shutterstock
1. We started 2020 nearly going to war with Iran. Perhaps we should have taken that as a hint of the tumultuous year ahead.
Iran’s top security and intelligence commander was killed on Jan. 2 in a drone strike at Baghdad International Airport that President Trump authorized. Maj. Gen. Qassim Suleimani was the architect of nearly every significant operation by Iranian intelligence and military forces over the past two decades, claiming the lives of hundreds of Americans in Iraq.
General Suleimani’s killing propelled the U.S. to the precipice of war with Iran and plunged the world into seven days of roiling uncertainty. Online searches for “will there be a draft?” soared.
Earlier this week, Iran issued an arrest warrant for Mr. Trump and 35 others it says were involved in the general’s killing. Interpol, an international police organization, said it would not step in. — Remy
Doug Mills/The New York Times
2. Less than a week into the new year, John Bolton announced that he would be willing to testify in the Senate impeachment trial of President Trump.
It was a tantalizing prospect. Mr. Bolton, the former national security adviser, above in 2019, was privy to the inner workings of the White House. He was said to be deeply troubled by Mr. Trump’s efforts to pressure Ukraine, and had even written a memoir that, when it was finally released months later, divulged, as promised, much of the inside story.
The possibility of his testimony — and of an outcome that wasn’t a party-line acquittal — hung over the trial for weeks. But Republicans, who had endured countless hours of damaging testimony during the House investigation, had no interest in changing the rules of the trial to allow new witnesses.
The Senate voted against hearing from Mr. Bolton, and days later voted to acquit Mr. Trump. — Tom Wright-Piersanti, Briefings editor
Jordan Gale for The New York Times
3. From the beginning, it was always Joe Biden.
Sure, his chances of winning the Democratic presidential nomination looked shaky after devastating early defeats in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada. But his staunch support among Black voters powered a comeback in South Carolina. The one-two-three punch of support from Pete Buttigieg, Amy Klobuchar and Beto O’Rourke led to blowout victories on Super Tuesday, effectively spelling the beginning of the end of the competition.
Still, a primary field more than two dozen strong was nothing if not historic. The most women ever to run for president. The biggest age gap. The most racially diverse field. The first openly gay major presidential candidate.
But after three years of President Trump, Democratic voters proved themselves to be tired of the unprecedented. In 2020, the pragmatic outweighed the possible. — Lisa Lerer, political reporter
Tolga Akmen/Agence France-Presse — Getty Images
4. It was the breakup heard around the world.
Prince Harry and Meghan delivered a jarring blow to Britain’s royal family when they announced on Jan. 8 that they would “step back” from their official duties. It was an extraordinary retreat by the couple, who had grown increasingly isolated within the House of Windsor since their wedding in 2018.
The couple did not originally have the queen’s approval for their plan to become part-time royals, and went rogue to get ahead of a leak. A deal with Buckingham Palace, which included giving up their royal titles, became official on March 31. Above, their last royal appearance.
They now live in Los Angeles with their son, Archie. — Remy
Jenna Schoenefeld for The New York Times
5. Kobe Bryant’s death in a helicopter crash plunged the N.B.A. — and seemingly much of the world — into a state of mourning that persists among the many fans and fellow athletes who idolized him.
The former Los Angeles Lakers star, 41, and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, were among nine people who died in the Jan. 26 accident, which occurred in foggy conditions on a hillside outside of Los Angeles.
Public memorials sprang up overnight, including one in the plaza outside Staples Center, the arena where Bryant had crafted so many singular moments for the Lakers over the course of his 20-year career. — Scott Cacciola, N.B.A. reporter

6. A landmark #MeToo victory.
On March 11, Harvey Weinstein, the glorified producer who for years dominated Hollywood, was sentenced to 23 years in prison for sex crimes, effectively putting the 67-year-old behind bars for the rest of his life.
His sentencing capped a sharp downfall for the once-powerful media mogul that started in October 2017 when several women openly accused him of sexual assault and harassment, and fundamentally altered the perception of sex crimes and power dynamics. — Alisha Haridasani Gupta, gender reporter

7. It first appeared in The Times on Jan. 6 as a “mysterious, pneumonialike illness” that had sickened a few dozen people in Wuhan, China.
Days later, Chinese researchers identified the source as a coronavirus. Two weeks later, the virus was on the front page of The Times as China scrambled to contain the contagion.
Then, time seemed to accelerate. Once-in-a-generation events began erupting one after the next.
Professional sports leagues around the world suspended seasons. Stocks plunged and a bear market emerged after 11 years in bull territory. The World Health Organization declared the virus a global pandemic. President Trump cut off travel from Europe.
And that was just March 11.
More than 10.9 million people have been sickened worldwide and more than half a million have died. Above, gravediggers in São Paulo, Brazil. In the U.S., the country hit hardest by the virus, a surge in new cases shows that the outbreak is spiraling out of control. And from what we can tell, the virus will most likely be with us for some time. — Jonathan Wolfe, Briefings writer
The New York Times
8. A pandemic does strange things to the economy.
The sharp, sudden drop in activity has produced one of the deepest recessions in history, and also perhaps the shortest. Indeed, it may already be over: The upswing in May and June, measured against the depths of March and April, make a range of economic indicators look as if they are soaring.
But compared with a year earlier, those same numbers reveal an economy that remains deep in a hole, with millions of jobs destroyed and billions in sales lost. The damage done will take a long time to repair, and reopenings that have been paused or rolled back may make things worse. — Jason Karaian, DealBook editor

9. Everything from work to theater moved online.
Sex work and sex content make an intriguing leading indicator about where both work and entertainment consumption are going.
This year we saw that our unhappy surprise always-at-home culture made opportunities of all kinds, for the kind of professional streaming sex performers pictured above, amateur dancers and entrepreneurs alike.
That will trickle down! Contributing strongly to that? More and more time spent online, the vast majority of that in apps. If you’re not watching TikTok and Instagram and listening to podcasts in the ways that we used to watch CBS and read Condé Nast magazines, the world is leaving you behind, sir or madam! (Fair, that may be a good choice.) — Choire Sicha, Styles editor

10. Which brings us to the current national unrest.
On Memorial Day, a graphic video captured the police killing of a Black man suspected of using a counterfeit $20 bill. What followed may be the largest movement in U.S. history.
George Floyd died after a white officer knelt on Mr. Floyd’s neck for more than eight minutes, ignoring his pleas of “I can’t breathe.” The phrase has been a part of scores of deaths in police custody, but this time, national outrage crested over the use of deadly police restraints and the treatment of African-Americans, sparking a deep examination of the country’s racist past and present.
It manifested in Black Lives Matter protests around the world, including the one above in New York City, with chants of Mr. Floyd’s name along with Breonna TaylorAhmaud ArberyRayshard Brooks and more; in corporate companies confronting enduring forms of racial discrimination; in the removal of statues and Confederate flags; and in police reform.
“A truly great country does not ignore or excuse its sins. It confronts them and then works to make them right,” Nikole Hannah-Jones wrote in The Times Magazine in her case for reparations. “If we are to be redeemed, if we are to live up to the magnificent ideals upon which we were founded, we must do what is just.”

Investigative journalist Katherine Eban set out to report on a seemingly straightforward question: Are generic drugs really identical to their brand-name counterparts? The answer sparked a decade of interviews, meetings with whistleblowers, on-the-ground reporting across four continents and digging into confidential FDA documents. In this alarming talk, she takes us inside overseas manufacturing plants and exposes the fraud behind many low-cost generic medicines.

The History of America’s Independence Day and Name Your Favorite Firework!

“Taxation without representation!” was the battle cry in America’s 13 Colonies, which were forced to pay taxes to England’s King George III despite having no representation in the British Parliament. As dissatisfaction grew, British troops were sent in to quell the early movement toward rebellion. Repeated attempts by the Colonists to resolve the crisis without military conflict proved fruitless.

On June 11, 1776, the Colonies’ Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia and formed a committee whose express purpose was drafting a document that would formally sever their ties with Great Britain. The committee included Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman and Robert R. Livingston. Jefferson, who was considered the strongest and most eloquent writer, crafted the original draft document (as seen above). A total of 86 changes were made to his draft and the Continental Congress officially adopted the final version on July 4, 1776.

The following day, copies of the Declaration of Independence were distributed, and on July 6, The Pennsylvania Evening Post became the first newspaper to print the extraordinary document. The Declaration of Independence has since become our nation’s most cherished symbol of liberty.

Bonfires and Illuminations

On July 8, 1776, the first public readings of the Declaration were held in Philadelphia’s Independence Square to the ringing of bells and band music. One year later, on July 4, 1777, Philadelphia marked Independence Day by adjourning Congress and celebrating with bonfires, bells and fireworks.

The custom eventually spread to other towns, both large and small, where the day was marked with processions, oratory, picnics, contests, games, military displays and fireworks. Observations throughout the nation became even more common at the end of the War of 1812 with Great Britain.

In June of 1826, Thomas Jefferson sent a letter to Roger C. Weightman, declining an invitation to come to Washington, D.C. to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. It was the last letter that Jefferson, who was gravely ill, ever wrote. In it, Jefferson says of the document:

“May it be to the world, what I believe it will be … the signal of arousing men to burst the chains … and to assume the blessings and security of self-government. That form, which we have substituted, restores the free right to the unbounded exercise of reason and freedom of opinion. All eyes are opened, or opening, to the rights of man. …For ourselves, let the annual return of this day forever refresh our recollections of these rights, and an undiminished devotion to them.”

– Thomas Jefferson

Congress established Independence Day as a holiday in 1870, and in 1938 Congress reaffirmed it as a paid holiday for federal employees. Today, communities across the nation mark this major midsummer holiday with parades, firework displays, picnics and performances of “The Star-Spangled Banner” and marches by John Philip Sousa.

Diadem

As a type of peony or chrysanthemum, a diadem has a cluster of stationary stars at its center.

Palm

This shell contains a few large comet stars, which in bursting create large tendrils that give it the appearance of a palm tree.
