The End of a Presidency: Trump’s Loss in a Divided America | Fault Lines

Nov 10, 2020  Al Jazeera English

As the Democrats take back the White House, what does the 2020 presidential election say about the future of US politics? Despite Joe Biden’s win, tens of millions of Americans chose Donald Trump for a second term. How the Republican party relates to this bloc of voters – along with the ideology Trump represents – is now central to its strategic direction. For the Democrats, an old guard embodied by Joe Biden and a new generation of progressives are in a contest for influence over the party’s vision. In The End of a Presidency: Trump’s Loss in a Divided America, Fault Lines explores how Trump changed the presidency, and where the two parties will go next. – Subscribe to our channel: http://aje.io/AJSubscribe – Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AJEnglish – Find us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aljazeera – Check our website: https://www.aljazeera.com/

The Morning: Biden and China

The New York Times   nytdirect@nytimes.com

View in browser|nytimes.com          November 25, 2020

By David Leonhardt
Good morning. Biden introduces his foreign policy team. The Dow breaks 30,000. And Pennsylvania is banning alcohol sales.

How Biden will confront China
The presidents who came just before Donald Trump took a mostly hopeful view of China. Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and the two George Bushes all tried to integrate China into the global economy and political system. Doing so, they believed, could persuade China to accept international rules and become more democratic.
The strategy largely failed.
China used access to the world’s markets to grow richer on its own terms. It rejected many international rules — on intellectual property, for example — while becoming more authoritarian at home. As a recent Times story puts it, China has adopted “increasingly aggressive and at times punitive policies that force countries to play by its rules.”
Trump is not a close student of international affairs, but he evidently grasped China’s ambitions in ways that his predecessors did not. He treated it as what it almost certainly is: America’s most serious threat since the Soviet Union.
Trump’s China policy had a different weakness, in the eyes of many experts and foreign diplomats. He antagonized allies who are also worried about China’s rise, rather than building a coalition with Japan, Europe, Australia and others. As Keyu Jin, a Chinese economist at the London School of Economics, has written, Trump has been “a strategic gift” for China.
Soon, it will be Joe Biden’s turn — to see if he can manage China more effectively than other recent presidents have. (Yesterday, Biden introduced his foreign-policy team.)
His administration is likely to take a different approach to China than it does on many other issues. On those others, like climate change and health care, Biden will be trying to reverse Trump’s policies. On China, Biden instead seems set to accept Trump’s basic diagnosis but to strive for a more effective treatment. The Biden team’s critique of the current China policy is about “means more than ends,” Walter Russell Mead wrote in an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal.
Biden and his aides have signaled that they will not return to the wishful pre-Trump policy toward China (even though several of them helped shape that policy in the Obama administration). “The United States does need to get tough with China,” Biden wrote in Foreign Affairs magazine in January.
To do so, they will use diplomacy. Antony Blinken, Biden’s choice for secretary of state, said this summer: “We are in a competition with China … We need to rally our allies and partners instead of alienating them to deal with some of the challenges that China poses.” Jake Sullivan, the incoming national security adviser, has written (along with the historian Hal Brands) that the way to check China’s display of a “superpower’s ambition” and maintain U.S. influence is to end “the current trajectory of self-sabotage.”
Biden, speaking about his new appointees yesterday, said, “They embody my core beliefs that America is strongest when it works with its allies.”
In concrete terms, this could mean forging more agreements on restricting the use of Chinese technology, like Huawei. It could mean creating economic alliances that invest in developing countries only if they agree to respect intellectual property and human rights — and trying to isolate China in the process.
The larger goal will be making other countries believe that the U.S. is no longer going it alone. “The narrative in Asia,” Michael Green of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told me, “is that America is out of the game.”
The view from Beijing: A Chinese official writes about the possibility of “cooperative competition” in a Times Op-Ed.

THE VIRUS

  • Pfizer plans to ship 4 million doses of its vaccineacross the U.S. in mid-December. Health care workers and vulnerable people will receive the first doses.

  • New York is fining the organizers of a Hasidic weddingwith thousands of guests $15,000. Mayor Bill de Blasio called it “amazingly irresponsible.”

THE PRESIDENTIAL TRANSITION

  • Biden’s teams have begun to coordinate with their counterparts in the Trump administration. About 20 meetings took place yesterday, including at the Department of Homeland Security and the Education Department.
  • The White House gave approval for Biden to receive the President’s Daily Brief, a summary of high-level intelligence.
  • Trump is planning to pardonhis former national security adviser Michael Flynn. Flynn pleaded guilty twice to lying to the F.B.I. about his conversations with a Russian diplomat.
  • Trump issued his final turkey pardonin the annual Thanksgiving ceremony at the White House.

A Neural Network Generates Surprisingly Elegant Images of Dinosaurs Composed of Plants

Colossal: A Neural Network Generates Surprisingly Elegant Images of Dinosaurs Composed of Plants

JUNE 20, 2017  CHRISTOPHER JOBSON

Artist and writer Chris Rodley utilized a deep learning algorithm to create these really lovely illustrations of dinosaurs composed of plants. The images were generated with an online service called DeepArt that lets you upload a “target” image and then apply a visual style to it. For step one he fed the network images of common dinosaurs and then applied the styles of 19th-century fruit engravings and botanical illustrations. The results are a sort of 21st-century artificial intelligence channeling Giuseppe Arcimboldo. You can read a bunch more about all the technical mumbo jumbo over on Sploid. (via Kottke)

Whose Vote Counts (full film) | FRONTLINE

Oct 20, 2020  FRONTLINE PBS | Official

As America chooses its next president in the midst of a historic pandemic, FRONTLINE investigates whose vote counts — and whose might not. Subscribe on YouTube: http://bit.ly/1BycsJW In this documentary with Columbia Journalism Investigations and USA Today, New Yorker writer Jelani Cobb reports on allegations of voter disenfranchisement, how unfounded claims of extensive voter fraud entered the political mainstream, rhetoric and realities around mail-in ballots, and how the pandemic could impact turnout. With director June Cross, the Fred W. Friendly Professor of Media and Society at Columbia, and producer Thomas Jennings, Cobb scrutinizes one of the first elections held during the pandemic — Wisconsin’s April 2020 primary, which saw long lines, claims of disenfranchisement, an unprecedented number of absentee ballots and dueling legal battles between Republicans and Democrats. The film places the election within the context of America’s history around voting rights and suppression, and discovers lessons for the country as a whole as the November presidential contest approaches. #Election2020 #WhoseVoteCounts #Documentary Watch “Whose Vote Counts” starting Tues., Oct. 20: https://to.pbs.org/3jecZef Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/frontlinepbs Twitter: https://twitter.com/frontlinepbs Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/frontline FRONTLINE is streaming more than 300 documentaries online, for free, here: http://to.pbs.org/hxRvQP Funding for FRONTLINE is provided through the support of PBS viewers and by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. REVEALED: Trump’s hidden video deposition in Trump University fraud case

Sep 18, 2020  Mother Jones

? Full analysis on the Trump University deposition: https://www.motherjones.com/deposition ? Full Trump “hot-mic” tape with commentary: https://youtu.be/SqNtc-t0Cr0 ? Trump deposition “hot-mic” tape highlights: https://youtu.be/fZw228yu0hI During the 2016 campaign, Donald Trump was burdened with federal lawsuits that accused him and his Trump University of defrauding students who had paid thousands of dollars to learn the supposed secrets of Trump’s financial success. As part of the lawsuit, Trump sat for a contentious six-hour deposition in Trump Tower on December 10, 2015. He subsequently managed to get the court to seal the video recording of the session. But Mother Jones has now obtained the full video of Trump’s deposition. The written transcript of the session was released in June 2016, but the video version includes several exchanges that likely would have not played well for Trump if they had become public when he was chasing votes. Had the video deposition been released during the campaign, it probably would have yielded ammo for anti-Trump ads. The video shows Trump parrying with the lawyer for the plaintiffs, Jason Forge, over various issues, including false statements made by Trump University employees and Trump’s own memory. Trump at one point griped, “It’s the most ridiculous lawsuit I’ve ever seen.” He claimed not to remember having boasted that he possessed one of the best memories in the world and repeatedly said he could not recall matters related to the fraud case. He downplayed false and misleading statements presented by Trump University instructors as merely “hyperbole,” refusing to label them “false.” He even disavowed a passage from one of his own books in which he had assailed educational institutions for committing “fraud.” Mother Jones was provided the video by a source who asked not to be identified. Art Cohen, who was a lead plaintiff in one of the lawsuits against Trump University and Trump, confirmed that this was the actual video of the deposition. (Last month, Mother Jones posted a video of a conversation that occurred during a break in these proceedings between Trump and Dan Petrocelli, Trump’s attorney, in which Trump boasted of threatening the Better Business Bureau to change the D grade it awarded Trump University to an A.) Trump University shut down in 2010. Though Trump vowed during the 2016 campaign that he would never settle the Trump U lawsuits, days after the 2016 election, he did just that. He paid the students $25 million, without acknowledging any wrongdoing. The spacecraft must target Bennu’s rocky surface with great accuracy, touching down within a rocky area just 52 ft (16 m) in diameter. During the maneuver, the spacecraft and the asteroid will be approximately 207 million miles (334 million km) from Earth. Live coverage from Lockheed Martin’s facility in Denver, Colorado, with mission managers from the University of Arizona, Lockheed Martin, and NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center begins at 5 p.m. EDT.  The spacecraft is scheduled to depart Bennu in 2021, and to deliver the collected sample to Earth on Sep. 24, 2023. It will be the first U.S. mission to carry samples from an asteroid back to Earth, and the largest sample returned from space since the Apollo era.

Photographer Captures Unique Image of the Moon Disguised as Saturn

My Modern Met: Photographer Captures Unique Image of the Moon Disguised as Saturn

By Jessica Stewart on September 25, 2020

Guatemalan photographer Francisco Sojuel was already having an incredible evening as he climbed the Acatenango volcano. It was Christmas Eve 2019 and he’d settled in at the basecamp when he noticed something breathtaking in the night sky. In the early morning hours, just before sunrise, Sojuel looked up and saw the Moon surrounded by a ring of clouds. Incredibly, the clouds made it look like the Moon was “dressing up” like Saturn. Recognizing the unique quality of the moment, Sojuel fired off some shots and came away with a once-in-a-lifetime image.

In his photograph, we can see the Moon circled by the clouds as it hovers over the landscape. A silhouette of Pacaya volcano and the Guatemalan highlands fills out the lower portion of the image and enhances its drama. According to the photographer, the cloud is actually a cirrostratus cloud. These high-level, thin clouds are made of ice crystals. At certain angles, they create halos around the moon. Given that there’s no real halo around this Moon and the texture of the cloud is a bit fluffy, it might be a cirrostratus fibratus or a cirrus spissatus cloud. These are both denser and are often formed by strong winds.

Sojuel is known not only for his incredible landscape and adventure photography, which includes shooting live volcanos, but also his astrophotography. He takes in the night sky as he goes about his adventures, giving his own unique perspective on Central America’s starry sky.

See more of Francisco Sojuel’s beautiful astrophotography.

Fmr. Trump Homeland Security Official: “His Policies Are Racist” | Amanpour and Company

Oct 13, 2020  Amanpour and Company

Elizabeth Neumann is a former Department of Homeland Security official who served in the Trump administration from 2016-2020. Federal intelligence and security agencies say white supremacist extremists pose America’s deadliest domestic terror threat. The shocking evidence was on full view last week when the FBI busted a plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and overthrow the government. Elizabeth Neumann was assistant secretary for threat prevention at the Department for Homeland Security under President Trump. She says her repeated attempts to flag the dangers of these racist groups were ignored. A lifelong Republican, Neumann will not vote for the GOP this election cycle, as she explains to Hari Sreenivasan. Originally aired on October 12, 2020.

Three Takeaways from Amy Coney Barrett Confirmation Hearing: Guns, ACA/Obamacare and Recusal

Oct 13, 2020  Glenn Kirschner

Today’s hearing on Trump’s nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to be a Supreme Court Justice covered several big-ticket issues: her view on the Second Amendment’s right to bear arms and the law prohibiting possession of firearms by convicted felons; her skepticism over Chief Justice Roberts’ opinion upholding the Affordable Care Act (AC); and whether she would participate or refuse to participate (recuse herself) in any case involving a challenge of the results of the upcoming presidential election. Here is a layman’s explanation of these issues and more . . . *EDITED: IN THE VIDEO, IN 6:15 I INADVERTENTLY SAID THAT I DISAGREE WITH THE TWO JUDGE MAJORITY IN THE CANTOR CASE. I MEANT TO SAY, “I AGREE.” BUT I CORRECTLY STATED THAT I DISAGREE WITH JUDGE BARRETT’S DISSENT IN THE CANTOR CASE. Descend into the Elaborately Decorated Tomb of Pharaoh Ramesses VI Through This 3D Virtual Tour

JULY 10, 2020  GRACE EBERT

A stunning 3D virtual tour from the Egyptian Tourism Authority takes viewers deep into the heavily detailed tomb of Pharaoh Ramesses VI. Named Tomb KV9, the underground structure has a long corridor leading down to the now-broken sarcophagus, and both walls and the ceiling are inscribed with writings from ancient Egyptian texts and astronomical renderings. The fifth ruler of the Twentieth Dynasty of Egypt, Ramesses VI’s reign lasted for about eight years in the 12th century BC. In 1898, his tomb was cleared by Georges Émile Jules Daressy who stole a portion of the sarcophagus, which then was acquired by the British Museum. (via Twisted Sifter)

I Quit My Job In Finance And Have Been Photographing Wildlife

Ever Since, Here Are My 30 Favorite Pics

Peter Delaney
Community member

One day, while visiting the Natural History Museum, by accident, I wandered into the wrong exhibit hall. To my surprise, I had entered the exhibition for the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year. I was astounded by the winning photographs. I was transported visually to a world I had never witnessed before. I was mesmerized by the beautiful artworks on show—in particular, the winning image, Blue Iceberg by Cherry Alexander.

This wildlife exhibition was an uplifting experience and one I would repeat every year. Little did I know the profound effect it would have on my life in years to come.

After working in the finance industry in the City of London for 15 years, I needed a balance in my life. Wildlife photography became my yang! I quit my job.

And in 2005, Africa became the new chapter in my life. The sheer size and magnitude of this continent were overwhelming. From navigating the forests of Bwindi and climbing the peaks of Kilimanjaro through to meandering along the red dunes of the Kalahari, I started photographing Africa.

It may be a cliché, but it is true—photography has become my life. No matter where I am, my mind’s eye is taking photographs. It has taught me to see the world in a different light, and for that, I am eternally grateful.

We never know what road we may take in life or the catalyst that changes our life forever. For me, it was a serendipitous wrong turn into the exhibit hall of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year, the world’s most prestigious wildlife photography competition, which incidentally I have won an astonishing three times.

A Few Words About Peter

Peter Delaney quit a career in finance to pursue a dream of travelling Africa in a Land Cruiser. And along the way, he found his passion, Wildlife Photography.

From navigating the forests of Bwindi and climbing the peaks of Kilimanjaro, through to meandering along the red dunes of the Kalahari, Delaney started photographing Africa. “Africa became the new chapter in my life, and I have dedicated the last 15 years capturing Wildlife Photos this diverse continent,” Delaney notes.

The Irish native exchanged the Emerald Isle for a more colourful life in George, South Africa, to continue his travels through the magnitude of Africa. “The continent fascinates me like no other…

The Washington Post: Coronavirus Updates – The deadliest day since May, August 13, 2020

By Avi Selk
with Angela Fritz
 Email

The latest

The United States recorded the most covid-19 deaths in a single day since mid-May on Wednesday: nearly 1,500 fatalities.

The toll escalated as a new study found that New York City’s death rate in the first two months of its outbreak rivaled that of the infamous 1918 flu pandemic. “For anyone who doesn’t understand the magnitude of what we’re living through, this pandemic is comparable in its effect on mortality to what everyone agrees is the previous worst pandemic,” said Jeremy S. Faust, an emergency physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston who led the research team.

In extraordinary comments to Fox News, President Trump said he is trying to prevent the U.S. Postal Service from delivering millions of mail-in ballots to voters by holding up $25 billion in emergency funding for the agency. “They need that money in order to make the post office work, so it can take all of these millions and millions of ballots,” Trump said.

The cash-strapped mail service is already experiencing days-long delays after Trump’s new postmaster general implemented new policies including a ban on overtime pay. Congressional Democrats have insisted on emergency funding for the agency in their negotiations over a new stimulus bill, which collapsed Thursday as the Senate adjourned for the next three and a half weeks. Many health experts say mail-in voting is the safest way for people to vote in November, but Trump has baselessly attacked efforts to expand it as a plot to steal the election. The president’s likely opponent, Joe Biden, called Trump’s latest comments “an assault on our democracy and economy by a desperate man.”

The Supreme Court ruled on pandemic-related voter relief for the first time Thursdaydenying a GOP request that would have required a witness to be present when Rhode Island voters cast absentee ballots.

About 960,000 workers filed for unemployment insurance last week — the first time new claims dropped below 1 million since the outbreak intensified in March.

Hollywood is getting back to work after a five-month hiatus, but its fictional worlds will likely be transformed and restricted by the pandemic. “Crowd scenes are a no-go,” our business desk wrote. “Real-world locations will be limited. On-screen romance will be less common, sometimes restricted to actors who have off-screen relationships.”

Other important news

A Georgia high school made famous by viral photos of barefaced crowds in its hallways on the first day of class will remain closed through the week after 35 people there tested positive for covid-19.

Popular, seemingly high-tech masks with exhalation vents and valves don’t actually protect people from covid-19, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned.

Your questions, answered

“Could you please discuss the cleaning of masks and the use of masks with filters? Is the recommendation to wash after each use to kill the virus or eliminate the wearer’s own germs? Can surgical masks be washed without ruining their effectiveness?” — Katrinka in Maryland

Numerous studies have shown that a simple cloth mask — without valves, vents or filters — is ideal for controlling the spread of the coronavirus outside health-care settings. In updated guidance, the CDC specifically warns against wearing masks with exhalation valves or vents, even with disposable filters, because “this type of mask does not prevent the person wearing the mask from transmitting COVID-19 to others.”

The truth is that any mask that advertises “breathability” or “better airflow” is likely allowing viral particles through. A mask made up of a few layers of cotton fabric is still the best way to control the spread of the coronavirus.

In terms of cleaning, Post wellness reporter Allyson Chiu published a story today that addresses frequently asked questions about how to take care of your face masks.

What are the general guidelines for proper mask care?

For cloth masks, which have exploded in popularity in recent months, all three experts interviewed say daily washings are a must.

“Treat your mask like your underwear,” said Jade Flinn, a nurse educator for the Biocontainment Unit at Johns Hopkins Medicine. “You want to change it every day.”

Can N95s or surgical masks be washed?

Unlike the cloth variety, these masks cannot be effectively sanitized by a standard washing, said Elizabeth Mullans, a board-certified dermatologist based in Houston.

“Hospitals may be able to disinfect them, but there’s no way that the average person could go ahead and disinfect them,” Mullans said.

How do I wash my cloth mask?

The widely recommended method, which has also been promoted by the CDC, is simple: Throw the dirty mask in warm or hot water with your regular laundry. Health experts suggest using a fragrance-free,

hypoallergenic detergent if your mask has caused skin irritations such as increased acne or rash.

Can sunlight disinfect a mask?

“What I’m seeing is that folks that put it in the sun sometimes are thinking that they are decontaminating the mask,” said Michael Knight, an assistant professor of medicine at George Washington University. “Yes, UV light comes from the sun, but it’s not in a consistent amount to say that ‘yes, this has been decontaminated.’ ”

In the case of surgical or N95 masks, sunlight could be a bad thing, Flinn said, because it can degrade the special materials in some masks.

The New York Times   The Morning            August 13, 2020
By Sanam Yar and Ian Prasad Philbrick
Good morning. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris made their debut as running mates. The British economy sunk into its deepest recession on record. And the QAnon conspiracy theory has found its way to the mainstream.
The rise of QAnon

A man wearing a QAnon shirt at a pro-police rally in Brooklyn on Sunday.Stephanie Keith/Reuters
Over three years, the far-right conspiracy theory QAnon has spread from the outskirts of the internet into the mainstream. And by next year, it will most likely make its way into Congress: A QAnon supporter is almost sure to be elected after winning a Republican House primary runoff in Georgia this week.
It’s a remarkable rise for a group that believes in, among other things, a ring of Satan-worshiping, child-trafficking criminals led by prominent Democrats. We spoke with our colleague Kevin Roose, who has covered QAnon extensively, to get a sense of how the movement expanded its reach.
Social media platforms are a big part of it. “It’s still very fringe in terms of its ideology, but not in terms of its scale,” Kevin said. “We’ve seen QAnon Facebook groups swell to hundreds of thousands of members, and they are routinely driving conversations on social media.”
This week, NBC News reported that an internal Facebook investigation found thousands of QAnon-supporting groups and pages with millions of members and followers. Twitter permanently suspended thousands of accounts associated with the movement last month. And TikTok has blocked searches for QAnon-related hashtags.
But these companies have “realized belatedly that this is a major problem,” Kevin said. “The horse has left the barn.”
The pandemic, which led many people to spend more time online, has also bolstered the movement, Kevin said: “Our social interactions are mostly taking place online, and that means that the communities that have power online, including QAnon, are a much bigger part of the discourse.”
Much of its growth also comes from its ability to attach itself to, and then absorb, both legitimate causes and “every major conspiracy theory of the past 50 years,” Kevin said.
Its followers are “deliberately attempting to radicalize new groups of people,” he noted, by infiltrating Facebook groups focused on vaccine safety, parenting, and natural food and health.
“These are people who might be skeptical of mainstream science or authorities,” Kevin said, “and they’re inserting their messages to those communities. So that’s what people need to be made aware of — these aren’t people hanging out in the dark corners of the internet anymore.”
FOUR MORE BIG STORIES
1.     Biden-Harris ticket makes its debut

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, in their first public event together on Wednesday.Erin Schaff/The New York Times
Joe Biden and Kamala Harris made their first public appearance as running mates on the Democratic ticket in Wilmington, Del., yesterday afternoon. The event included sharp criticisms of President Trump’s handling of the coronavirus and the economic crisis. You can watch highlights of their joint appearance in a Times video.
Reactions from both sides:
  • Progressives, many of whom had disregarded Harris as part of the Democratic establishment, proclaimed their support for the ticket on Wednesday and reiterated that removing Trump from office was their priority.
  • Conservative media figures wasted no time hurling personal attacks at Harris, questioning her racial identity, mispronouncing her name and mocking her voice.
  • Trump called Harris “nasty” at least four times on Tuesday, wrote Katie Rogers, a turn to his preferred misogynistic trope. He also called her the “meanest, most horrible, most disrespectful” member of the Senate.
2. The pandemic’s true toll
The number of U.S. residents who have died since March is now more than 200,000 higher than it would be in a normal year, a Times analysis found. Those “excess deaths” most likely reflect the true cost of the pandemic — and suggest that the official death toll may be a substantial undercount.

By The New York Times | Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
As the coronavirus outbreak in the U.S. has moved south from its early epicenter in New York, so have the unusual patterns in deaths from all causes. Many of the recent coronavirus cases and deaths in the South may have been driven largely by reopenings and relaxed social-distancing restrictions.
In other virus developments:
3. Police raid Hong Kong newspaper
Police officers this week raided the newsroom of Apple Daily, Hong Kong’s biggest pro-democracy newspaper, part of a crackdown on free expression under a national security law the Chinese government imposed on the semiautonomous region in June. Jimmy Lai, the paper’s founder, and four executives face possible charges under the new law.
The raid led to a show of support from Hong Kong residents: The paper said it printed 550,000 copies on Tuesday, nearly eight times a regular run. But some reporters worry about its survival in Hong Kong’s newly restrictive climate.
4. American guns invade the U.K.

The National Ballistics Intelligence Service in Birmingham, England.Andrew Testa for The New York Times
Gun deaths in Britain, while still rare, have risen over the last few years. One reason, British authorities say, is an influx of firearms being smuggled from the United States.
At least 782 American guns have been discovered by British police since 2017, data obtained by The Times shows. Some of them can be traced to loosely regulated gun fairs in states like Florida.
“Weapons that don’t matter in the United States, because America deals in millions, routinely have an enormous impact in the U.K., because of the extraordinary scarcity of handguns,” one expert said.
Here’s what else is happening
  • Many children receiving chemotherapy in Beirut now have nowhere to turn for treatment after an explosion last week destroyed hospitals and wiped out medicine stockpiles.
  • Israel said it had thwarted a cyberattack by a North Korea-linked hacking group. Security researchers said the hackers were successful and stole classified data that could be shared with Iran.
  • Sumner Redstone, the billionaire entrepreneur who built a media empire encompassing CBS and Viacom, died in Los Angeles on Tuesday. He was 97.
  • Three people were arrested on charges that they threatened and tried to bribe women who accused the singer R. Kelly of sexual abuse, federal prosecutors said Wednesday.
  • The rapper Kanye West privately met with Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, in Colorado last weekend. West has filed petitions to get on the November ballots for president in several states in an apparent bid to siphon support from Biden.
  • Lives Lived: Matt Herron, a magazine photojournalist, made one of his most memorable shots in 1965: In it, a white Mississippi police officer tries to seize a small American flag being waved by a Black 5-year-old; next to them, another officer holds a confiscated protester’s sign reading, “No More Police Brutality.” Herron died at 89.
If you enjoy The Morning, please consider subscribing to The Times. Subscriber support helps make work like this possible.
IDEA OF THE DAY: CAN TRUMP COME BACK?
Less than 12 weeks from Election Day, Trump trails Biden by about eight percentage points nationally. Is there still time for him to turn things around?
Yes, some observers say. The polls will most likely tighten as Election Day approaches, and FiveThirtyEight’s forecast currently gives Trump a 28 percent chance to win. Trump could exploit Biden’s long record on trade issues or the Iraq War to close the gap. Or he could try to engineer an October surprise involving a coronavirus vaccine.
Factors outside the president’s direct control could also help him, Ross Douthat, a Times Op-Ed columnist, argued recently. The pandemic or the economy could improve, or public opinion could turn against recent racial-justice protests.
Others think a comeback is unlikely. Given Trump’s unpopularity and the state of the economy, other poll-watchers are skeptical that he can make up much ground. Undecided voters appear less willing to back Trump this year than in 2016. And voters in some states can begin voting as soon as next month.
“The only way Trump could even conceivably eke out a win on Election Day would be through voter suppression on an improbably (perhaps impossibly) massive scale,” The Washington Post’s Eugene Robinson wrote.

Bored Panda: People Are Sharing “Do’s And Don’t’s” From 1918-1920 During The Spanish Flu, It Shows How History Repeats Itself

Rokas Laurinavi?ius and Mindaugas Bal?iauskas

History tends to repeat itself, and even though COVID-19 is not the worst flu whatsoever, we as a society seem to be making the same mistakes we did in 1918 during the Spanish Flu outbreak.

Talya Varga turned to Twitter to share an old newspaper article allegedly showing a list of “do’s and don’t’s” for preventing the Spanish Flu. Sadly, almost all of the entries look painfully familiar.

“Wear a mask,” reads the first. “Wash your hands before each meal”, says another. Not to mention the one that urges to “not disregard the advice of a specialist just because you do not understand.”

After Varga highlighted the issue, her tweet immediately went viral, sparking an important discussion.

The 1918 influenza pandemic is one of the most severe pandemics in recent history.

It was caused by an H1N1 virus with genes of avian origin. Although there is no universal consensus regarding where the virus came from, it spread worldwide from 1918-1919.

In the US, it was first identified in military personnel in spring 1918.

Some estimates suggest that as many as 500 million people or one-third of the world’s population became infected with this virus. The number of deaths was considered to be at least 50 million worldwide with about 675,000 occurring in the United States.

As the tweet started to go viral, more and more people began responding to it

Social distancing saved thousands of American lives during the Spanish flu outbreak. Philadelphia, for example, detected its first case of a deadly, fast-spreading strain of influenza on September 17, 1918. The very next day, in an attempt to halt the virus’ spread, city officials launched a campaign against coughing, spitting, and sneezing in public. Good start. 10 days later, however, despite the potential epidemic, the city hosted a parade that 200,000 people attended.

Flu cases continued to climb until finally, on October 3, schools, churches, theaters, and public gathering spaces were closed.

Two weeks after the first reported case, there were at least 20,000 of them.

For comparison, when a case popped up in St. Louis, the city shut down most public gatherings and quarantined victims in their homes just two days later.

By the end of the pandemic, the death rate in St. Louis was less than half of the rate in Philadelphia.

About 358 people per 100,000 died in St Louis, while there were about 748 deaths per 100,000 people in Philadelphia.

It’s pretty saddening to see that while technology and medicine have made huge leaps since the beginning of the 20th century, our mindsets have somewhat remained the same, and we can’t come together to fight this microscopic yet very powerful enemy.

Natural Phenomenon Transforms Hummingbird’s Wings into Tiny Rainbows

My Modern Met: Natural Phenomenon Transforms Hummingbird’s Wings into Tiny Rainbows

By Sara Barnes on July 11, 2019

Artist and photographer Christian Spencer was standing on his verandah in Rio de Janeiro when he made an amazing discovery. When the black Jacobin hummingbird flew with the sun striking its open wings, a beautiful prism effect appeared. At that moment, it was as if its body was made of rainbows.

In 2011, Spencer recorded the bird’s movements for a film called The Dance of Time. The movie went on to receive 10 international awards as well as three best film honors. But, that wasn’t the end of the rainbow hummingbirds. Several years later, Spencer returned to the subject. “I decided to try and photograph the same phenomenon with my camera,” he shares with My Modern Met. The resulting series is called Winged Prism, and for Spencer, the images reveal “a secret of nature that cannot be seen with our eyes.”

Although Winged Prism seems too magical to be true, Spencer says that there wasn’t any digital manipulation involved. “There is no special technique,” he explains, “just diffraction of light through the wings of this special hummingbird.” The awe-inspiring beauty it produces is what makes these images so special. “Nobody ever could have ever dreamed that this was a reality,” he says. “I receive emails every day from people across the world touched by these images.”

One image from Winged Prism is now available as a limited edition print from Spencer’s website.

Artist and photographer Christian Spencer captured the awe-inspiring sight of the sun shining on a black Jacobin hummingbird’s wings.

The result is a prism effect and makes it look as though the creature’s body is made of rainbows.

Can Donald Trump retain the presidency? – BBC Newsnight

Jul 28, 2020  BBC Newsnight

The CFPB once defended consumers. Thanks to Trump, it now helps companies prey on them instead.

Kathleen Kraninger testifies in the Senate on her nomination to lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in Washington on July 19, 2018. (Manuel Balce Ceneta/AP)

Opinion by   Helaine Olen  Columnist   August 1, 2020

For two days this week, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Director Kathy Kraninger testified to Congress about protecting consumers during the coronavirus pandemic, first in the Senate and then in the House. It went about as well as could be expected, which is not particularly well at all. Kraninger, a thoroughly unqualified Trump appointee, has shown little interest in doing her purported job, which is protecting Americans from the financial services industry. Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-N.Y.) said she lacked empathy, while Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) demanded she resign.

Kraninger’s main accomplishment since the start of the covid-19 pandemic has been the loosening of regulations on payday loans. Previously, regulations stopped people who couldn’t afford to repay the loans from taking them on, because borrowers seeking short-term relief instead often found themselves trapped in a cycle of quickly rising debt. Annual interest on payday loans can run above 500 percent.

When queried as to why she loosened regulations on payday loans, Kraninger said that consumers are showing a lot of interest in them. That’s quite possibly true, given that at least 1 million people have filed for unemployment every week since mid-March, but hardly the point of Kraninger’s critics, who believe payday loans are exploitative products that prey on the financially desperate.

Then there is the fact that, since the beginning of the shutdowns, tens of thousands of consumer complaints have poured into the CFPB about mortgage issues, inaccurate credit reports, hassles with debt collectors, you name it. Kraninger says she’s addressing them but her critics — such as Warren — disagree.

The CFPB was conceived by Warren while she was a professor at Harvard Law School. It was meant to give consumers leverage over the financial-services sector, which all too often saw them as so much prey. It scored major victories during the Obama administration. It called out lending institutions for racist auto loan lending standards and spearheaded the federal investigation into Wells Fargo for a decade of turning a blind eye to its employees opening fake accounts for customers in an attempt to keep up with unrealistic sales goals.

No surprise, the financial services sector, which hates the CFPB, cheered Kraninger’s appointment to the job. Their faith was well rewarded, and not just in the area of payday loans. Last year, a House Financial Services Committee investigation revealed that during Kraninger’s first six months on the job, the amount of money the bureau recovered for consumers fell to six percent of what it had been under the final months of Obama appointee Richard Cordray’s leadership. Instead, under Kraninger, the CFPB emphasizes “financial literacy,” despite the fact that, when put on the spot by Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) in 2019, Kraninger couldn’t even properly calculate an annual interest rate.

Of course, the sabotage — and make no mistake, that’s what it is — of the CFPB isn’t even a major story in the Trump era. On Thursday, Vanity Fair revealed that a White House initiative led by Jared Kushner (who else?) to devise a national policy to test for covid-19 was undermined from within, possibly because the disease initially hit politically expendable Democratic states. Millions of parents are suddenly realizing there will be no in-person public school for their children this fall and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos shows next to no concern. The U.S. Postal Service, systemically underfunded, is now falling behind on delivering mail, seemingly at the behest of its new head, Trump donor Louis DeJoy. That’s not just an annoyance, but something that could contribute to election chaos in November if ballots are not delivered or received on time.

In the face of all this, Kraninger’s inept management of the CFPB barely merits a moment of attention. But it should. Her tenure in the top role of the government’s most powerful consumer advocacy organization is a demonstration of the contempt Trump and Republicans hold for governance, not to mention their prioritization of the interests of the wealthiest segments of our economy over the well-being of everyone else. It’s an absolute shame and travesty that Kraninger, whose knowledge of personal finance appears limited to how she can best serve the all-powerful financial sector, is in charge of one of the government agencies best positioned to help Americans protect their money at a time of unprecedented economic carnage.

BoredPanda: See How The “10 Billion Tree Tsunami” Tree Planting Campaign Transformed This Area Between 2019 And 2020

Robertas Lisickis  BoredPanda staff

Within the last year, planting trees was the thing to do in easing the negative effects of climate change. This is evident by the slew of various tree-planting initiatives that were organized, including Team Trees where 600 YouTubers pledged to plant 20 million trees, Ethiopia breaking the world record by planting over 350 million trees in half a day, and these 13 feel-good stories about saving our planet.

While the coronavirus has taken over airtime in recent months, the need for tree-planting never went away with many of these initiatives continuing to plant trees. And many are making good progress on their goals.

One such initiative is the 10 Billion Tree Tsunami, Pakistan’s largest ever tree plantation project, which recently had an update on its progress in the form of a before and after video that has been making people gasp in wonder.

It takes years for some of us to get simple things done, but nature is better at reaching its goals

Pakistan’s Advisor to the Minister of Climate Change shared an inspiring before-and-after video of how much the natural landscape in Balloki changed in a year

Malik Amin Aslam, Pakistan’s Advisor to the Prime Minister and Federal Minister of Climate Change, shared a video on his Twitter of what the Balloki Nature Reserve near Lahore in the Punjab district looked like a year ago, and what it looks like now.

The video shows barren land with virtually no greenery for miles, a sight that was seen during Aslam’s visit to the area a year ago. Today, it is a luscious and prosperous area fully paved with grass and trees.

The caption read: “Was a treat to visit #BallokiNatureReserve #Lahore after a year – #PMIK @ImranKhanPTI inaugurated this in 2019 as part of #10BillionTreeTsunami and the plantation results in a year are phenomenal – #Change and #NayaPakistan IA”.

This change is a part of the 10 Billion Tree Tsunami project which aims to reforest Pakistan

10 Billion Tree Tsunami is a government launched and funded project to promote reforestation in Pakistan. The project hopes to plant 10 billion trees within the span of five years, and to achieve a number of other objectives, including to increase forest area, rehabilitate degraded forests, to protect green areas and its wildlife, to provide jobs, among many others.

You see, trees help to protect the soil from degradation and to regulate water on farms, mitigate floods, and enrich the soil and surrounding areas with biodiversity. Also, crops grown in forested areas are often more resilient to the impact of droughts, excessive rains, and extreme weather.

The project aims to increase forest area, rehabilitate degraded forests, and protect green areas and the wildlife living in it, among other objectives

So far in 2020, 20,798 hectares of plantations were planted to achieve these aims. The Redd Monitor reports that a total of 350,000 hectares of trees were already planted in both planting and natural regeneration form and that the project has also created around 3,500 green enclosures in state-owned forests.

Back in February, the ministry announced their plan to plant 250 million saplings this spring in hopes of populating the bare bits of land around cities. However, it is not clear whether this has been achieved because of the coronavirus and the subsequent lockdown.

The project includes 3 regions with 27 divisions and progress is seen in many locations across the country

The project earned great recognition, including that from the World Economic Forum, WWF, and IUCN

The project has come under fire for a number of reasons. There have been alleged reports of bogus billing, fake plantation, poor quality earthwork, unauthorised payments, and other activities that hint at corruption.

Besides that, it was also reported by the Redd Monitor that the coronavirus lockdown has also led to planters earning around 500 rupees a day—half of what they could on a good day before the pandemic, meaning that they now earn less than minimum wage (which is approx. 800 per day).

Despite this, the project has managed to earn a number of awards and wider recognition over the years, including that from the World Economic Forum, WWF, IUCN, and was ranked 4th biggest initiative by the Plant for Planet Foundation (UNFCCC). And now that people can see more results of the initiative in Aslam’s video, it’s safe to say that the project is going somewhere and both the planet and, subsequently, humanity will benefit from it in the long run.

Besides restoring natural landscapes, the project also plans to create jobs and ensure greater wildlife security

With its 10 billion tree “tsunami”, Pakistan joins a number of other massive tree-planting projects, including the aforementioned Ethiopia’s record-breaking campaign that managed to plant 350 million saplings in 12 hours. Another attempt at breaking the record happened in India, where 1.5 million volunteers planted 66 million trees in the same timespan, showing just how much more natural the world has become over the recent years.

What did you think about this? Have you had a chance to plant a tree, and if so, which one? Let us know in the comment section below!

Biden unveils economic plan to spur American manufacturing

Jul 9, 2020  CNN

Presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden unveiled the first major plank of his economic agenda Thursday, detailing a moderate proposal to use government purchasing to spur manufacturing in sectors such as clean energy, infrastructure and health care. The former vice president delivered a speech outside his childhood hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania, as he launched what his campaign is calling its “build back better” agenda, which Biden said would pump federal dollars into purchasing and research and development “in a way not seen since the Great Depression and World War II.” Other planks his campaign said will be detailed in the coming weeks include clean energy, the “caregiving economy,” such as child-care and domestic workers, and racial equity. “Throughout this crisis, Donald Trump has been almost singularly focused on the stock market — the Dow and the Nasdaq. Not you and not your families,” Biden said. “If I am fortunate enough to be your president, I’ll be laser-focused on working families, middle-class families like I came from here in Scranton, not the wealthy investor class. They don’t need me; working families do.” #Bidfen #CNN #News

How incompetent is Donald Trump? Interview with John Bolton | Conflict Zone

Jul 9, 2020  DW News

John Bolton dicusses his time as national security adviser and his impressions of US President Donald Trump with DW Conflict Zone. Four months before the next US presidential election, Donald Trump’s poll numbers are in a slump. Disaffected conservatives call him incompetent and are campaigning against the Republican president, citing the upward curve of new coronavirus cases in the US, the millions of unemployed Americans, and the protests and racial tension in the wake of George Floyd’s killing. They echo Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, who says Trump’s leadership is inadequate. One of his three former national security advisors, John Bolton, joined DW’s Tim Sebastian to discuss his impressions of President Trump on Conflict Zone. He has just releases his book on the issue ‘The Room Where It Happened: A White House Memoir’ 00:00:00 Intro 00:01:10 Trump’s integrity 00:03:45 Obstruction of justice 00:05:30 Working for Trump 00:08:30 Corrupted government 00:09:25 Trump and dictators 00:10:15 Kim Jong un 00:12:15 Vladimir Putin 00:14:45 Russian bounties for the Taliban 00:17:30 Jamal Khasogghi 00:19:45 Iran nuclear deal 21:45 Ukraine and Impeachment More background and key quotes: https://p.dw.com/p/3eyIE The picture Bolton paints in his latest book, “The Room Where It Happened,” is filled with disturbing takes of the current US president: dubious offers to strongmen Trump admires and a president who does not even read, let alone study briefing materials on complex national security issues. Bolton characterizes White House infighting as part of Trump’s managerial style. “I think that Trump is very mistrustful of not only the bureaucracy as a whole, but even his own staff.” “He still hasn’t fully appreciated what it means to be president of the United States,” Bolton added. When asked about Trump’s admiration of dictators, Bolton demurred: “I’m not a shrink, I don’t psychoanalyze people.” But he did offer this: “Trump, in a sense, envied the Xi Jinpings and the Vladimir Putins. He liked talking to ‘big guys.’ You know, ‘big guys’ get together and they do ‘big guy’ things. I think it was that simplistic.” Does Trump fear the Russian president, Sebastian asked. “I don’t think he’s scared of him,” Bolton answered, and cautioned against exaggeration. “There’s plenty to criticize, but when people stretch beyond what they need to to make the criticism, it doesn’t strengthen the case against Trump; it weakens it. It emboldens many of his supporters to say we’re victims of a conspiracy.” Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/user/deutsche…

US Supreme Court rules on Trump’s tax returns: What now? | DW News

Jul 10, 2020  DW News

The US Supreme Court has blocked Congress from obtaining President Trump’s financial records – for now. But for federal prosecutors, the court has paved the way to see Trump’s tax returns. The rulings mean the public most probably will not see the President’s tax returns before the November presidential election. The Justices ruled that a New York prosecutor can subpoena the president’s tax returns. ICU Doctor: Top 10 Things I learned Treating Coronavirus Patients | COVID-19

Jul 2, 2020  Doctor Mike Hansen

ICU Doctor: Top 10 Things I learned Treating Coronavirus Patients | COVID-19 #coronavirus #covid19 #covid_19 Some intensive care units in various hospitals throughout this county have designated units for COVID-19 patients. As an intensive care doctor, I’ve been seeing a lot of COVID-19 patients in our designated Coronavirus ICU. It’s one thing to read about Coronavirus in the medical literature, but to be actually seeing real patients with this disease is another experience altogether. There are a lot of things I’ve learned, but for this video, I’ll focus on the top 10 that stand out to me. So, starting at the bottom with number 10, is, signs/symptoms. The most common symptoms that I’m seeing are fever, cough, shortness of breaths, and body/muscle aches. I haven’t seen many patients with the other symptoms we often hear about, such as loss of taste and smell, or nausea, and diarrhea. I have not seen any rashes related to Coronavirus, probably because I only see adult patients. I will say that even though confusion and delirium are very common in the ICU in general, there does seem to be more of that with Coronavirus. A lot of COVID-19 patients who require hospitalization have low levels of vitamin D. And this is consistent with what we are seeing in a lot of recent studies that have been coming out. But of course, correlation doesn’t necessarily mean causation, so does it just so happen that a lot of patients who have moderate or severe COVID, happen to have low vitamin D levels? Maybe, maybe not. And does that mean that we should give every hospitalized patient with Coronavirus big doses of vitamin D when they hit the door? Maybe. And does that mean people, in general, should supplement with vitamin D? And what is the ideal level of vitamin D for the population, especially when it comes to COVID-19? Should we be targeting the current general recommendation for everyone, irrespective of COVID-19, with a goal of 20 ng/ml? or should we aim for higher, like 30, or perhaps 40? No one knows for sure the answers to these questions. But there are studies being done on this. And as we speak there are 3 RCT for vitamin D and Coronavirus. This virus is VERY contagious. One of my patients was in the hospital for unrelated reasons. She actually had sepsis due to infarcted gut, meaning part of her intestine was not getting enough blood flow. It was severe enough to the point that some of the tissue in her intestine had died. When this happens, the bacteria that live in the intestine can then invade the walls of the intestine, and get into the bloodstream. This is bad news because these bacteria can then spread throughout the body, and this is known as sepsis. Besides antibiotics, this treated with surgery, where the dead gut tissue is removed, meaning part of the intestine is taken out. And this is what happened to her. And she got better. But after she initially got better, she started having more difficulty with her breathing. Her oxygen levels were dropping, despite us giving her more and more oxygen. So we got a CXR, and later a CT scan of the chest, which showed bilateral infiltrates, meaning areas of inflammation in both lungs. And this is the pattern we typically see with COVID-19 pneumonia, where it tends to go to the periphery of the lungs and also more so at the bottom of the lungs. LARGEST OPEN OCEAN CLEAN-UP IN HISTORY

Jun 25, 2020  Ocean Voyages Institute – Project Kaisei

OCEAN VOYAGES INSTITUTE SETS RECORD WITH LARGEST OPEN OCEAN CLEAN-UP IN HISTORY Ocean Voyages Institute sets a new record after a 48 day expedition with the largest at sea clean-up to date, successfully removing 103 tons (206,000 lbs.) of fishing nets and consumer plastics from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Hawaiian Crew Goes On A 48-Day Expedition And Sets Record For Largest Haul Of Plastic Removed From The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Andželika Jasevi?i?t?  BoredPanda staff

Plastic became globally mass-produced 65 years ago and since then, the amount of plastic we use has skyrocketed. So has plastic pollution. In 2015, 387 million tons of plastic were produced compared to 2 million manufactured in 1950. The staggering overconsumption of this material has a devastating effect on the environment with our oceans suffering the worst by far. It has been estimated that 8 million pieces of plastic pollution find their way into the ocean every day, which adds up to the 5.25 trillion pieces that are currently there.

Recently, the Ocean Voyages Institute’s vessel came back after a 48-day expedition, successfully removing 103 tons (206,000 lbs.) of trash from the Pacific ocean

Plastic waste results in the death of 100 million marine animals annually and it’s estimated that by 2050, it will greatly outnumber the fish in the ocean. Image credits: Ocean Voyages Institute

Without a doubt, we are losing our oceans, which are responsible for producing half of the world’s oxygen, to our excessive plastic consumption. Luckily, there are people who are trying to put a stop to this by cleaning the mess we all have caused, literally.

The crew has set a new record with the largest at sea clean-up in the Gyre to date

On June 23, the Ocean Voyages Institute’s marine plastic recovery vessel came back from a heroic voyage. After a 48-day expedition, 103 tons (206,000 lbs) of fishing nets and consumer plastics were removed from the Great Pacific garbage patch, also known as the Gyre and Pacific trash vortex.

To date, it’s the largest at-sea clean-up in the Great Pacific garbage patch. Image credits: Ocean Voyages Institute

“I am so proud of our hard-working crew. We exceeded our goal of capturing 100 tons of toxic consumer plastics and derelict ‘ghost’ nets, and in these challenging times, we are continuing to help restore the health of our ocean, which influences our own health and the health of the planet,” said Mary Crowley, founder and executive director of Ocean Voyages Institute. Image credits: Ocean Voyages Institute Image credits: Ocean Voyages Institute

Thanks to Crowley’s effective methods to remove massive amounts of plastics from the ocean, the successful mission has removed 48 tons (96,000 lbs) during two ocean clean-ups in 2019. Image credits: Ocean Voyages Institute Image credits: Ocean Voyages Institute

However, even after setting a new record for plastic clean-up this year, the Pacific Gyre, which is located halfway between Hawaii and California, still remains the largest area with the most plastic. Image credits: Ocean Voyages Institute

The huge amount of trash that has been recently collected by the Ocean Voyages Institute is currently being prepared for upcycling and proper disposal. Image credits: Ocean Voyages Institute Image credits: Ocean Voyages Institute

“In keeping with our commitment to environmental stewardship, Matson has been searching for a way to get involved in cleaning up the Pacific Gyre. We’ve been impressed with the groundbreaking efforts of Ocean Voyages Institute and the progress they’ve made with such a small organization, and we hope our support will help them continue this important work,” said Matt Cox, chairman and CEO. Go to the top

About this data

Description

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a new virus.

The disease causes respiratory illness (like the flu) with symptoms such as a cough, fever, and in more severe cases, difficulty breathing. You can protect yourself by washing your hands frequently, avoiding touching your face, and avoiding close contact (1 meter or 3 feet) with people who are unwell.

HOW IT SPREADS

Coronavirus disease spreads primarily through contact with an infected person when they cough or sneeze. It also spreads when a person touches a surface or object that has the virus on it, then touches their eyes, nose, or mouth.

The Endless Call

Demands for racial equity and justice have always been part of the American story.

While the images here span the past two weeks, the words paired with them span the past 100 years.

Turn music on

By David Montgomery    June 11, 2020

Ninety-nine years ago, in Tulsa, white mobs torched the black side of town and killed as many as 300 residents, with the tacit support of some in law enforcement, in one of the worst spasms of racial violence in American history. Last month in Minneapolis, George Floyd died with a police officer’s knee pressed to his neck, just days ahead of the May 31-June 1 anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre. Those two episodes bookend nearly a century in which civil rights progress has been fitful, hard-fought and unfinished. Across 10 decades, from Tulsa to today — against a backdrop of lynching and cross burning, more recently replaced by police chokeholds and vigilante gunshots, amid the subtler violence of systemic racism — voices have been raised in protest and defiance.

Words spoken in times of uplift or assault, hope or despair, can crystallize a moment or a movement: I have a dream. … Black Power. … I can’t breathe. Black Lives Matter. The voices collected here elaborate and extend the mantras, such as Langston Hughes versifying his insistence that America live up to its myth, and James Baldwin defining protest as a duty.

But how many other voices have been lost? For a long time the Tulsa massacre was barely mentioned in history books. The account of eyewitness B.C. Franklin quoted here surfaced only in 2015. Today it’s harder for people and events to be ignored because another phrase from protests past — The whole world is watching — has literally come true, thanks to the cameras in every potential witness’s pocket. The recent demonstrations were sparked by a bystander’s video of George Floyd’s death — and they have ended up generating more evidence of excessive force used by police against demonstrators in Washington, Buffalo, Philadelphia, New York and Atlanta.

The images presented here, photographed in late May and early June, capture the passion, anger and hope of new voices demanding to be heard. The raised fists communicate as directly as the cardboard signs — hand-lettered with yet more indelible words — while the fleeting tears of a young demonstrator and the warm embrace of comrade marchers speak of the vulnerability and pain at the root of any protest.

The juxtaposition of the historic voices and contemporary images underscores how much work is left to be done. Read in the context of today’s clamors for justice, the decades-old diagnoses and laments sound remarkably — and wrenchingly — fresh and relevant. That those dreams remain unfulfilled speaks to an American futility and systemic failure. Seen in that light, the images of today become part of the canon of timeless illustrations documenting the unfinished struggle.

The killing of George Floyd offers yet another tragic opportunity to continue an erratic process of change begun long ago. No one can say if this time will be different. All we can know is that these voices echoing from the past put their faith in the future — and that these demonstrators insist that the future is now.

For fully forty eight hours, the fires raged and burned everything in its path and it left nothing but ashes and burned safes and trunks and the like where once stood beautiful homes and business houses. And so proud, rich, black Tulsa was destroyed by fire — that is its buildings and property; but its spirit was neither killed nor daunted.

Though I have found no Negroes who want to see the United Nations lose this war, I have found many who, before the war ends, want to see the stuffing knocked out of white supremacy and of empire over subject peoples. American Negroes, involved as we are in the general issues of the conflict, are confronted not with a choice but with the challenge both to win democracy for ourselves at home and to help win the war for democracy the world over.

No, I’m not an American. I’m one of the 22 million black people who are the victims of Americanism. One of the 22 million black people who are the victims of democracy, nothing but disguised hypocrisy. So, I’m not standing here speaking to you as an American, or a patriot, or a flag saluter, or a flag waver — no, not I. I’m speaking as a victim of this American system. And I see America through the eyes of the victim. I don’t see any American Dream; I see an American nightmare.

Malcolm X, from a speech in Cleveland, 1964

Portland, Ore., June 2. (Photo by Andrew Wallner)

See, it’s time for America to wake up and know that we’re not going to tolerate — we’re not begging anymore. And I’m not going to say it’s not any more of us going to die, because I’m never sure when I leave home whether I’ll get back home or not. But if I fall while I’m in Kentucky, I’ll fall five feet and four inches forward for freedom, and I’m not backing off it. And nobody will have to cover the ground that I walk on as far as freedom is concerned because I know as well as you should know that no man is an island to himself, and until I’m free in Mississippi, you’re not free in no other place.

Fannie Lou Hamer, from a speech in Kentucky, 1968

New York, June 5. (Photos by Celeste Sloman)

Let me speak of a recent, a very recent black dream: The waiting for the Messiah, some leader. Now nobody — Martin Luther King did not tell Rosa Parks to stay in her seat. That came first. Then he came. She just didn’t move. We didn’t used to have to wait for the word. And the history of black people in this country is those people who got up and moved, all over this country.

We imagined a more humane future, but we also risked our very lives to defeat racism and U.S. military aggression against Southeast Asia. Now, it is your turn to imagine a more humane future — a future of justice, equality and peace. And if you wish to fulfill your dreams, which remain the dreams of my generation as well, you must also stand up and speak out against war, against joblessness and against racism.

What happened in Los Angeles in April of 1992 was neither a race riot nor a class rebellion. Rather, this monumental upheaval was a multiracial, trans-class, and largely male display of justified social rage. For all its ugly, xenophobic resentment, its air of adolescent carnival, and its downright barbaric behavior, it signified the sense of powerlessness in American society.

This is where we are right now. It’s a racial stalemate we’ve been stuck in for years. … But I have asserted a firm conviction, a conviction rooted in my faith in God and my faith in the American people, that working together we can move beyond some of our old racial wounds and that, in fact, we have no choice — we have no choice if we are to continue on the path of a more perfect union.

We know how to be racist. We know how to pretend to be not racist. Now let’s know how to be antiracist.

I came to this city in 1955, which was the year that the body of Emmett Till was found in a body of water in Mississippi, same year that Rosa Parks refused to give up the back seat on the bus. … Since that time, I have seen any number of struggles against racism, and they have all ended up with relatively little outcome. So the question is valid, it’s a reasonable question: Is this going to be just like so many other movements, a moment of anger and rage and then back to business as usual? … [But] his death did not simply start a bunch of good speeches, a bunch of tributes. Out of his death has come a movement, a worldwide movement. And that movement is not going to stop after two weeks, three weeks, a month. That movement is going to change the world.
